Chapter 117 – The Fire That Holds
Chapter 117 – The Fire That Holds
\---
The abyss fell on them.
Kade had no time to breathe, no time to think. Only the roar of the molten tide as it surged upward, swallowing light, swallowing air, swallowing everything. The world became violet fire and grinding shadow, so loud it tore thought from his head.
But he did not let go of Louve’s hand.
That, above all, he clung to.
The abyss could take his flesh, could burn his lungs raw, could strip the skin from his bones—but it would not take her from him. His claws locked on her fingers, blood mingling with fire, his arm shaking as the storm tried to tear them apart.
“Stay—” he forced the word out through gritted teeth, his voice swallowed by the roar. “Stay with me.”
\---
The wave slammed into them.
Heat like a thousand suns. Weight like a collapsing mountain. His body snapped backward, ribs shattering with a sound he barely registered over the thunder. His wings tore, flesh peeling raw as the fire clawed at him. His scream was ripped from his throat, lost instantly to the cacophony.
The abyss wanted to break him. To unmake him. To scatter his flame into nothing.
And for a moment—it almost succeeded.
Darkness pressed against the edges of his vision. His grip faltered. His heart staggered, its beat slowing under the crushing weight.
No.
He bared his teeth, forcing his body upright against the impossible tide. His grip on Louve’s hand tightened until claws drew blood. Her ember flickered faint in his grasp, but it was there.
If she could burn, even faintly, then so could he.
\---
Kade roared.
The sound was ragged, torn from his chest, but it carried into the storm, pushing back against the abyss’s laughter. He tore his free arm upward, clawing through fire, ripping through the wave as if tearing apart chains. His body burned, bone exposed, but the fire answered him—not consuming, but fueling.
Louve’s ember surged in answer. Golden light bled into the violet storm, a streak of dawn cutting through endless night. He felt it surge up his arm, through his chest, into his throat until the roar was no longer his alone.
It was theirs.
\---
The wave broke.
For one impossible instant, the storm parted around them, torn by the blaze of their combined fire. Molten rain hissed against unseen walls, crashing down into the sea below with thunder that shook the cavern.
Kade gasped, pulling Louve against him, holding her tight. Her wings were shredded, her skin cracked with burning lines of ember, but her eyes were open, blazing gold despite it all.
“You’re still here,” he rasped.
She smiled, weak but unbroken. “Always.”
And then the abyss screamed.
\---
The molten core convulsed, the chains groaning as if pulled to their breaking point. The surface of the sea split open, and something vast began to rise.
Kade’s chest seized. He had seen monsters before. He had fought things that should never have been born. But this—this was something else.
A hand. Not flesh, not stone, but molten fire itself, shaped into fingers the size of towers. It clawed upward, dragging with it a body made of the abyss’s molten heart, violet flames pouring from its wounds like rivers. Its face—if it could be called that—was a hollow mask of fire, eyes like pits that burned straight into his skull.
The true abyss was rising.
\---
Kade staggered back, pulling Louve with him, though there was nowhere to run. His claws trembled. His body wanted to collapse, to surrender.
But surrender was death.
And he had made his choice long ago.
He shoved Louve behind him, wings flaring wide despite the pain. “Stay back.”
Her hand grabbed his arm instantly, her voice raw but fierce. “No. Together.”
The molten giant roared, the sound shattering stone, and the cavern floor split open beneath their feet. Lava geysers burst upward, chains snapping one by one. The abyss had no more patience. It would consume them both here and now.
\---
The first strike came fast.
A fist of molten fire, descending like a mountain. Kade shoved Louve clear, bracing himself with every ounce of strength he had left. He raised both arms, claws burning, and caught the strike.
The impact shattered the cavern. His knees buckled instantly, bones snapping under the force, his scream torn raw. The fire seared through his flesh, burning away scales, cutting to the marrow. His claws split, nails tearing away.
But he held.
Because Louve was behind him.
Because her fire pressed against his back, giving him strength when his body failed.
Because he refused to let the abyss win.
\---
The second strike came before the first ended.
Chains whipped upward, tangling around Louve, dragging her into the air. She screamed, wings thrashing, ember flaring weak but furious. Kade’s heart seized.
“NO!”
His body moved before thought. He tore one arm free from the giant’s fist, ignoring the way his flesh sloughed from bone. With a single, desperate leap, he grabbed her wrist.
Their hands locked again.
And the fire between them exploded.
\---
Golden light erupted, brighter than the abyss had ever known. It seared the chains, burning them to ash, tearing through the molten air like a star breaking dawn. The abyss recoiled, shrieking in rage, its molten body splintering under the assault.
Kade fell back with Louve into his arms, both of them broken, burned, but alive. Their combined blaze still glowed around them, a fragile shield in the storm.
He pressed his forehead to hers again, breath ragged.
“We’re not done,” he whispered. “Not yet.”
\---
The abyss answered with silence.
And then—with laughter.
Low. Endless. Merciless.
“Not yet,” the voice rumbled. “But you will be.”
The molten giant’s eyes burned brighter, its chest splitting open to reveal a deeper fire inside. Not just molten flame, but something darker. Older. Hungrier.
The true heart had not even begun.
\---
Kade’s claws trembled, his chest heaving as he stared into that abyssal fire. His body could not take much more. Louve’s ember was burning itself raw. And yet—
He tightened his grip on her hand.
If this was where they ended, then they would make it an ending the abyss would never forget.
Side by side.
Burning brighter than the dark.
