Chapter 87 Returning from the Otherworld
POV: Luna
I wake up the next morning feeling like I've been hit by a truck.
Every muscle aches. My head pounds. My mark throbs with residual energy.
But I'm also different.
Stronger somehow. Like the otherworld visit changed something fundamental.
Nova is sitting in the chair beside my bed, watching me with worried eyes.
"How long have you been there?" I ask, my voice rough.
"All night. I wasn't going to leave you alone after what happened." She leans forward. "How are you feeling?"
"Honestly? Like death. But also... alive. Does that make sense?"
"With you? Yeah."
I sit up slowly. My mark is still glowing. Faintly. Like embers instead of fire.
"It hasn't stopped since you came back," Nova observes. "Whatever happened in the otherworld, it changed your mark. Made it more active."
I look down at the Eclipse symbol. She's right. It's pulsing steadily. Rhythmically.
Like a heartbeat.
"I can feel them," I say quietly. "Miguel and my grandmother. Their essence. Anchored in my mark somehow. Not like they're alive. But like... echoes. Memories. Support."
"Is that normal?"
"I don't know. Nothing about this is normal."
There's a knock at the door.
Aria, Sienna, and Lyric enter without waiting for permission.
"We heard you had some kind of magical episode last night," Aria says, coming straight to my bedside. "Nova sent us a coded message. What happened?"
I tell them everything. The involuntary pull to the otherworld. Seeing Miguel and Elara. Learning about Cole Thorne. The shadow caller watching from the darkness.
They listen in silence, their expressions growing more concerned with each detail.
"So the shadow caller has a name," Sienna says when I finish. "Cole Thorne. First Eclipse wolf. Chose corruption centuries ago."
"And he's connected to Professor Thorne somehow," Lyric adds, already pulling up information on her tablet. "Descendant, you said?"
"That's what my grandmother told me. But she didn't know if Marcus Thorne is aware of his ancestor's history."
"And the new teacher is also named Cole," Aria points out. "That can't be coincidental."
"Maybe not. But it could also be a red herring. Someone using the name deliberately to confuse us." I swing my legs out of bed, testing my strength. "We need more information before we start accusing teachers of working with corrupted Eclipse spirits."
"Agreed. But we also can't ignore the connection." Sienna moves closer. "Luna, can I examine your mark? I want to see how it's changed."
"Sure."
I extend my wrist.
Sienna holds her hands above my mark, not touching. Her eyes glow faintly as she reads the magical signature.
After a moment, she gasps.
"What?" I ask. "What's wrong?"
"Your power. It's... Luna, you're at least twice as strong as you were yesterday. Maybe more. The otherworld visit didn't just give you information. It amplified your connection to Eclipse magic."
"Is that good or bad?"
"Both. You're more powerful. More capable. But also more visible. Anyone sensitive to magical energy will be able to sense you from much further away now."
"Like a beacon," Lyric says. "Broadcasting your location and power level to anyone who's looking."
Great. Just what I needed.
"Can we shield it somehow? Make it less obvious?"
"I can try a dampening spell," Sienna offers. "But it won't hide you completely. Your power is too strong now."
"Do it anyway. Any help is better than none."
Sienna spends the next ten minutes creating a complex spell around my mark. Layering protections. Dampening the signature.
When she finishes, my mark's glow dims slightly. Still visible. But less bright.
"That's the best I can do without restricting your access to your own power," she says.
"It's perfect. Thank you."
We spend the rest of the morning discussing strategy.
What to do about Cole Thorne's spirit haunting the otherworld. How to investigate the new teacher without arousing suspicion. Whether to tell faculty about what I learned.
"The problem is trust," I say. "My grandmother didn't trust anyone at the Academy with her investigation. If Professor Thorne is connected to the shadow caller, telling faculty could be dangerous."
"But if he's not connected, and we don't warn anyone, we're putting everyone at risk," Nova counters.
"What about selective disclosure?" Lyric suggests. "We tell one person. Someone we're reasonably sure isn't compromised. Test their reaction. Use that to determine who else we can trust."
"Who would we tell?" Aria asks.
"Ryder," I say immediately. "He's been protecting me since I got here. He's not faculty. Just a senior student and teaching assistant. And he's never given me reason to doubt him."
"Plus, he's into you," Lyric adds with a grin. "Which means he's personally invested in keeping you safe."
I feel my face heat. "He's not into me."
"Please. The man looks at you like you hung the moon. It's adorable."
"Can we focus?" I say, trying to redirect. "The point is, Ryder is our best option for an ally."
They agree. We'll tell Ryder about the otherworld visit. About Cole Thorne. About the shadow caller's identity.
And we'll watch his reaction carefully.
If he's trustworthy, he'll help us investigate. If not... well, we'll deal with that if it happens.
Classes are canceled for me. Nurse Willow's orders after the "magical episode."
So I spend the day in my dorm, recovering.
But by evening, I'm restless. Tired of being cooped up.
"I'm going for a walk," I announce.
"You're supposed to rest," Nova reminds me.
"I've been resting all day. I need air. Movement. Something other than these four walls."
"Then I'm coming with you."
We head out onto the grounds just as the sun is setting.
The Academy looks beautiful in the fading light. Peaceful. Safe.
But I know better now.
Danger is everywhere. Inside the wards. Outside them. In the otherworld. In this world.
Nowhere is truly safe.
"Your power really is different," Nova says as we walk. "I can feel it. Even with Sienna's dampening spell. You're radiating energy."
"I feel it too. Like I'm plugged into something massive. Always on. Always pulling."
"Does it hurt?"
"No. But it's... intense. Like trying to contain lightning."
We reach the Moon Circle and sit on one of the fallen stones.
The moon is rising. Nearly full. In a few days, there will be another ceremony.
"Do you think the trial is over?" Nova asks. "Or was the otherworld visit just the beginning?"
"I don't know. The goddess said it was trial of the heart. And I feel like I passed. Like I learned what I needed to learn."
"Which was?"
"That I can hold onto Miguel's memory without being trapped by it. That I can honor my human past while embracing my wolf future. That the choice isn't between light and shadow. It's about choosing myself."
"That's very philosophical."
"Yeah, well. Nearly dying and visiting the realm of the dead tends to make you philosophical."
Nova laughs. But it's strained.
"I'm scared for you, Luna. All of this. The trials. The shadow caller. The prophecy. It's too much for one person."
"I know. But I'm not alone." I bump her shoulder. "I have you. Aria. Sienna. Lyric. Ryder. Even Darius in his weird antagonistic way. I have people."
"Promise me you won't try to face the shadow caller alone. When he finally reveals himself. When the real confrontation comes."
"I promise."
We sit in comfortable silence, watching the moon rise.
And then I hear it.
The goddess's voice. Whisper-quiet. For my ears only.
"The balance is shifting, Luna."
I tense. "What balance?"
"Between light and shadow. Between human and wolf. Between control and chaos." Her presence feels closer than usual. "You survived the first trial. Proved your heart is strong. But the other trials are coming. And each one will be harder than the last."
"When?"
"Soon. The shadow caller is patient. But his patience is running out. He's been waiting centuries for an Eclipse strong enough to corrupt. Now that he's found you, he won't wait much longer."
"What do I do?"
"What you've always done. Trust yourself. Trust your friends. And remember that power without compassion is just destruction."
Her presence fades.
And I'm left with the distinct feeling that time is running out.
Whatever Cole Thorne has planned, it's approaching faster than I'm ready for.
"Luna?" Nova looks at me with concern. "You okay? You went really still."
"The goddess. She spoke to me."
"What did she say?"
I repeat the warning. About the shifting balance. About the shadow caller's patience running out.
Nova's face pales. "So we don't have much time."
"No. We don't."
We head back to the dorms as full darkness falls.
But I can't shake the feeling that everything is accelerating now.
The trials. The threats. The prophecy.
All of it converging toward some moment. Some choice. Some confrontation.
And when it comes, I'll have to be ready.
Ready to face a corrupted Eclipse spirit who's been waiting centuries for someone like me.
Ready to make choices that will determine not just my fate, but the fate of everyone around me.
Ready to prove that I'm strong enough to wield Eclipse power without being consumed by it.
No pressure or anything.
Just the weight of destiny pressing down on my shoulders.
And the quiet certainty that whatever comes next will change everything.
