Chapter 47 First Full Shift
POV: Luna
The Moon Circle is already crowded when we arrive.
Students from all years gather around the ancient stone circle, their faces illuminated by torchlight. The full moon hangs massive and silver overhead, so bright it almost hurts to look at.
I can feel it pulling at something deep inside me.
My wolf.
She's been restless all day, pacing and scratching at the edges of my control. Now, under the moon's full power, she's practically clawing her way out.
"You okay?" Nova whispers.
"I don't know."
Professor Cael stands at the center of the circle, waiting. Other faculty members are positioned around the perimeter. This is a controlled environment, but it doesn't feel controlled.
It feels wild.
Dangerous.
"First years, step forward," Professor Cael calls.
My legs feel like lead as I walk into the circle with the other first years. There are maybe twenty of us. Some look excited. Others look terrified.
I'm somewhere in between.
"Tonight, you will experience your first full transformation under the moon's power," Professor Cael says. "This is different from partial shifts. The moon will take over. Your wolf will emerge completely. Your job is not to fight it. Your job is to remember yourself underneath."
Easy for him to say.
"Mentors, take your positions."
Ryder appears beside me. His presence is steadying, but barely.
"Breathe," he says quietly. "Just breathe."
I try, but my chest feels tight. My skin is tingling. My bones ache.
"It's starting," I gasp.
"I know. Let it happen. Don't fight it."
But every instinct in my body is screaming to fight. To hold on. To stay human.
The moon seems to grow brighter. Hotter.
And then it hits me.
The shift.
It's nothing like the partial transformations I've done before. Those were gentle. Gradual. This is violent.
My bones crack and reshape. My muscles tear and reform. My skin burns as fur erupts across my body.
I scream, but it comes out as a howl.
I'm on my hands and knees, except they're not hands anymore. They're paws. Massive paws with sharp claws that dig into the earth.
Panic floods through me.
I can't breathe. Can't think. Can't remember my own name.
There's only the wolf.
Wild. Feral. Hungry.
"Luna." Ryder's voice cuts through the chaos in my mind. "Luna, look at me."
I turn my head. My vision is sharper now, but different. Colors are muted except for movement. And I can see Ryder so clearly. Every detail of his face. The steady beat of his pulse in his neck.
"Good. You're still in there. Stay with me."
I try to hold onto his voice. Try to remember who I am.
Luna Eclipse. First year. Human girl who became a wolf.
But the wolf doesn't care about any of that. She wants to run. To hunt. To feel the wind in her fur and the earth under her paws.
"Let her out a little," Ryder says. "But keep yourself anchored. You're in control. Not the moon. Not the wolf. You."
I take a tentative step. Then another.
My body feels powerful. Stronger than I've ever felt. Like I could run for miles without getting tired.
Around me, other first years are shifting too. Some smoothly. Others struggling like I am.
One girl shifts and immediately bolts for the forest. Two mentors chase after her.
"Don't run," Ryder warns. "Stay in the circle. Stay grounded."
But the urge to run is overwhelming.
I pace back and forth, my wolf fighting for control. She wants freedom. Wants space. Wants to hunt something, anything.
"Luna, focus."
I look at Ryder again, and slowly, his face starts to blur. The wolf is taking over completely.
No. No, I can't lose myself.
I dig my claws into the ground and force myself to remember. My name. My friends. Miguel. Home. Everything that makes me me.
The wolf snarls in frustration, but I hold on.
Minutes pass. Or maybe hours. Time feels strange like this.
Gradually, the panic fades. The wolf settles. We exist together, not fighting, just being.
I'm still Luna.
But I'm also the wolf.
Both at once.
"There you go," Ryder says, and I hear pride in his voice. "You did it."
I sit back on my haunches, panting. Around me, other first years are in various states of control. Some are still struggling. Others have found their balance like I have.
And then I notice them.
The other students. The ones watching from outside the circle.
They're staring at me.
Nova's mouth is hanging open. Aria looks impressed. Sienna has her hand over her heart.
Even some of the upper years are watching me with something like respect. Or maybe fear.
I look down at myself and realize why.
I'm big. Way bigger than the other first year wolves. My fur is silver-white, almost glowing in the moonlight. And my eyes, I can see them reflected in a puddle near my paws.
They're glowing. Bright silver. Like the mark on my wrist.
"Impressive," Professor Cael says, walking closer. "Very impressive, Miss Eclipse."
I want to ask what he means, but I can't speak in this form. Can only make wolf sounds.
Ryder crouches beside me. "You're more powerful than we expected. That's good. But it also means you'll be watched more closely."
I tilt my head, trying to understand.
"The bigger the wolf, the stronger the bloodline," he explains quietly. "And yours is clearly exceptional."
Great. Just what I need. More attention.
The ceremony continues for another hour. Some first years manage their shifts. Others don't and have to be sedated and taken to the medical wing.
I maintain control the whole time, though it takes every ounce of concentration I have.
Finally, Professor Cael signals that we can shift back.
The return is easier than the initial transformation. My bones reshape, my fur recedes, and within moments I'm human again.
Naked and shivering, but human.
Someone throws a robe over me, and I wrap it around myself gratefully.
"You did amazing," Nova says, rushing over. "Luna, you were huge. Like, scary huge."
"I felt huge," I admit. My voice is hoarse from howling.
"Everyone's talking about it. They're saying you might have Alpha potential."
I don't know how to feel about that. Part of me is proud. But another part is terrified.
The last thing I need is more reasons for people like Darius to see me as a threat.
Ryder appears beside me. "Go rest. You'll be exhausted for the next few hours. It's normal after your first full shift."
I nod and start to walk away with Nova, but then I feel it.
A presence.
Strong. Powerful. Watching me from the forest.
I turn, scanning the tree line.
There.
A figure. Standing in the shadows between the trees. Too far away to see clearly, but I can feel their power radiating even from here.
Whoever they are, they're stronger than anyone I've encountered so far.
Stronger than Darius.
Maybe even stronger than the professors.
"Luna?" Nova tugs my arm. "What's wrong?"
"Someone's watching us."
She looks where I'm pointing, but by the time she does, the figure is gone.
"I don't see anyone."
"They were there. I felt them."
Nova looks worried. "Maybe you're just tired. The first shift messes with your senses."
Maybe she's right.
But I don't think so.
Someone was watching me tonight.
Someone powerful.
And something tells me they're not done watching.
