Chapter 228 Training Under Pressure
POV: Luna
The Council's decision to keep Silverwood open came with increased expectations. Stricter standards. Higher demands. We had to prove we deserved to stay. Prove we could handle the threats. Prove we were more than just targets waiting to be destroyed.
So I organized high-stakes training. Mandatory for all combat-capable students. Combining magical and physical skills. Pushing everyone beyond their comfort zones. Creating the competence we needed to survive.
Selene led the magical demonstrations. Her mastery had grown exponentially over the past weeks. What used to take her minutes now took seconds. What used to drain her now barely registered.
She stood before a hundred students, channeling royal magic with casual confidence.
"Defensive barriers aren't just walls," she explained, creating a shimmering shield. "They're tactical tools. Mobile protection. Adaptive defense. Watch."
She moved the barrier. Expanded it. Contracted it. Shaped it to protect specific individuals or block specific attacks. The control was incredible, the precision inspiring.
"Now offense," she continued. "Royal magic isn't just defense. It's power. Authority. Command. Watch."
She channeled offensive energy. Not destructive. Controlled. Creating targeted strikes that disabled without killing, neutralized without destroying.
The students watched with awe. Seeing what was possible. What they could aspire to. What dedication and training could achieve.
"Your turn," Selene said. "Pair off. Practice. Push yourselves. Don't settle for adequate. Demand excellence."
The students mobilized. Eager. Inspired. Ready to try.
I moved through the groups. Correcting. Guiding. Teaching. Using every skill Miguel had taught me, every lesson I'd learned through survival, every instinct honed by experience.
"Wider stance," I told one student. "Better balance. More stable platform for channeling."
"Faster casting," I advised another. "Hesitation gets you killed. Trust your training. Trust your instincts."
"Good! Exactly! Now maintain it while moving. Static defense is useless in real combat."
Caleb worked with advanced students. Teaching techniques that made everyone who watched stop and stare. His intuition was incredible, his ability to predict student struggles and provide solutions before the problems fully manifested was unnervingly similar to Miguel's teaching style.
"He's amazing," one student whispered to another.
"It's like he knows exactly what you're going to struggle with before you do."
"It's creepy. But helpful. Very helpful."
I watched him teach, fascinated despite myself. Every gesture was Miguel. Every explanation. Every demonstration. The new body didn't matter. The essence was identical.
Through our connection, Caleb felt my observation. Looked up. Met my eyes. Smiled.
That smile. Miguel's smile. The one that meant he knew I was watching and was enjoying the attention.
My heart twisted. Torn between past love and present bond. Between what was and what is. Between Liam's certainty and Caleb's familiarity.
Liam noticed my distraction. Through the mate bond, he felt my emotional state. Felt the pull toward Caleb. Felt my struggle.
He approached quietly. Stood beside me. Didn't speak immediately.
"He's good," Liam said finally. "At teaching. At connecting with students. At making complex things simple."
"Miguel was too. Used to teach me magic theory. Made it accessible. Understandable. Fun even."
"Are you okay? Watching him? Being near him? Managing the emotions?"
"No. But I'm functioning. That's enough for now."
"Want humor? Distraction? Emotional support? I'm versatile."
Despite everything, I smiled. "All three. In whatever order feels right."
"Okay. Humor first. Did you notice Darius Kane keeps watching you? I think he's working up courage to actually talk to you instead of just staring creepily from across the room."
"Darius? Alpha's son? Why would he be watching me?"
"Because you're impressive. Powerful. Beautiful. And completely oblivious to your effect on people. He's been interested for years. Just never acted on it."
"I'm mated. To you. And apparently also to Caleb-slash-Miguel. I'm not available for additional complications."
"Tell that to prophecy. From what your friends researched, Eclipse wolves can have multiple mates. Maybe Darius is number three."
"Don't even joke about that. Two is already overwhelming. Three would be impossible."
"Four might be the actual number if Hunter shows up again. Remember him? Disappeared mysteriously after first year? Might be connected to all this."
"Liam. Stop. You're giving me anxiety."
"That's distraction accomplished. Now for emotional support. You're doing great. Managing impossible situation with grace. Strength. Intelligence. I'm proud of you. Even when I'm jealous. Even when I'm scared. I'm proud."
Through the mate bond, I felt his sincerity. His love. His genuine pride despite personal struggle.
"Thank you. For being patient. Understanding. Better than I deserve."
"You deserve everything. Don't let anyone tell you different. Not even yourself."
The training continued. Students improving visibly. Confidence growing. Skills sharpening.
Then Sienna approached. Looking worried. Urgent.
"Luna. We have a problem. The artifact fragments. They're moving."
"Moving how? They're embedded in the campus."
"Not anymore. The magical contamination. The otherworld energy. It's affecting their physical stability. They're phasing. Shifting. Heading toward something. Somewhere specific."
"Where?"
"The academy's heart. The central ward anchor. The oldest, most powerful part of Silverwood's magical infrastructure."
"Why?"
"I don't know. But magical readings indicate they're converging. Building toward something. Probably activation. Probably transformation. Probably catastrophic if we don't stop them."
"How long?"
"Hours. Maybe less. They're accelerating. Building momentum."
I looked at my pack. At Liam. At Caleb. At Selene. At everyone who'd become family through survival and choice.
"Training's over. Everyone to defensive positions. This is it. The artifacts are making their move. We respond. Now."
The students mobilized. Fear in their eyes but determination overriding it. They'd been trained for this. Prepared for this. Ready for this.
We ran toward the academy's heart. Toward the convergence. Toward whatever the artifacts were building.
And I felt it. Through my Eclipse mark. Through my very soul.
The artifacts weren't just moving. They were choosing. Seeking their wielder. Seeking me.
The prophecy was coming true. The transformation was beginning. The impossible choice was approaching.
And I had no idea what I would choose when the moment came.
