Chapter 126 Ambush at Silverwood
POV: Luna
Nova and I were dressed and out the door in seconds.
The hallways were chaos. Students running, professors shouting orders, alarms blaring.
Cole found us immediately, already shifted and ready to fight.
"Where?" he asked through the pack link.
"Eastern perimeter," I said. "I can feel it through the wards."
Aria, Sienna, and Lyric joined us as we ran toward the main courtyard.
The Headmaster was already there, organizing defenses.
"Students to the safe rooms!" he shouted. "Faculty, defensive positions!"
"We're staying," I told him.
"Miss Eclipse—"
"He's here for me. Running won't help."
The Headmaster looked like he wanted to argue but just nodded. "Then fight. And win."
We ran toward the eastern perimeter.
The wards were visible now, glowing barriers that surrounded the entire campus. And they were cracking.
Dark magic pressed against them from outside, relentless and powerful.
"How long will they hold?" Nova asked.
"Minutes at most," Sienna said. "He's using massive amounts of power."
As if in response to her words, a section of the ward shattered.
Rogue creatures poured through the gap. Dozens of them, all glowing with that unnatural red light.
"Here we go," Aria said.
We shifted as one, our wolf forms emerging in perfect sync.
The pack bonds flared to life, connecting us in ways that went deeper than words. I could feel everyone's position, their readiness, their determination.
We met the rogues head-on.
I tore into the first creature, claws and teeth finding weak points with ease. The otherworld connection surged through me, enhancing my speed and strength.
Beside me, Cole fought with brutal efficiency. Through our bond, I felt his focus, his protective instincts directed entirely at keeping me safe.
Nova and Aria worked together, one distracting while the other struck. Their coordination was flawless.
Sienna hung back slightly, using magic to create barriers and disrupt the rogues' movements.
Lyric darted between enemies, too fast to catch, her strikes strategic and devastating.
We were winning.
But more rogues kept coming.
"There's too many!" Nova's voice came through the pack link.
"Fall back to the courtyard!" I ordered. "Tighter formation!"
We retreated in organized chaos, fighting our way back toward the main Academy buildings.
Other students and faculty joined the fight. Ryder Thorn appeared, leading a group of senior students. Even Darius was there, his wolf form massive and powerful.
But it wasn't enough.
For every rogue we took down, three more appeared.
"He's summoning them continuously!" Sienna shouted. "We need to cut off the source!"
"Where is he?" Cole demanded.
I reached out with my Eclipse power, searching for Malachar's signature.
There. In the forest. Just beyond where the wards had broken.
"I'm going after him!" I said.
"Not alone!" Cole moved to follow.
"No. I need you here. Protecting the students."
"Luna—"
"Please. Trust me."
Through our bond, he felt my determination. My need to end this.
He didn't like it, but he nodded.
I ran toward the forest, leaving the main battle behind.
The trees were dark, shadows thick despite the moon overhead. My wolf senses guided me forward, following Malachar's magical signature.
I found him in a clearing, standing in the center of another ritual circle.
His hands were raised, dark energy flowing from them in continuous waves. Each wave summoned another rogue creature.
"There you are," he said without turning around. "I was wondering when you'd come."
"Stop this. Now."
"Why would I do that? I'm winning."
"You're killing innocent people!"
"Collateral damage." He finally turned to face me. "I told you before, Luna. I'll do whatever it takes to survive."
"Even destroy an entire school?"
"Even that."
I shifted back to human, needing my voice. "The goddess told me about you. About your obsession with immortality."
"Did she?" He smiled coldly. "And what else did she say?"
"That you're blind to alternatives. So focused on one solution that you can't see any others."
"There are no alternatives. The power behind that seal is the only thing strong enough to heal this body."
"Have you tried asking for help? Instead of stealing power and killing people?"
"Help?" He laughed. "From who? The goddess who abandoned me? The Council that fears me? The wolves who would see me dead?"
"From me."
That stopped him.
"You?" he repeated.
"Eclipse power can heal. Can anchor souls. Maybe it can help you too."
"You'd help me? After everything I've done?"
"If you stop this attack. Stop hurting people. Yeah, I'd try."
Malachar was silent for a long moment.
Then he laughed again, darker this time. "A noble offer. But I'm afraid I don't trust you."
"Then we're at an impasse."
"No." His eyes glowed brighter. "We're at the end."
He raised both hands and the ritual circle exploded with power.
I barely had time to shift before the dark magic hit me.
It wrapped around my wolf form like chains, burning and constricting.
I howled in pain.
Through the pack bonds, I felt my friends react. They were trying to reach me, fighting their way through the rogues.
But they were too far away.
Malachar approached slowly. "I gave you chances, Luna. Multiple opportunities to join me willingly. But you refused every time."
"Because you're insane!"
"Perhaps. But I'm also about to win."
He placed a hand on my mark.
The pain intensified. I felt him pulling at my Eclipse power, trying to tear it from my soul.
No. Not like this.
I reached for Miguel's essence, for the anchor that had supported me through everything.
It responded immediately, flooding through me with warmth and strength.
You can do this, Miguel's voice whispered. You're stronger than him.
I grabbed hold of the otherworld connection and reversed the flow again.
But this time, I didn't try to banish Malachar.
Instead, I pulled on the pack bonds.
Nova's fierce loyalty.
Aria's strategic mind.
Sienna's magical knowledge.
Lyric's quick adaptability.
Cole's unwavering faith.
All of it flowed through me, amplifying my power a hundredfold.
My mark blazed with silver light, so bright it was almost blinding.
Malachar stumbled back. "What are you doing?"
"Using the power you wanted." I stood, the chains dissolving around me. "But not the way you expected."
I channeled everything through my Eclipse mark.
The light exploded outward, washing over the clearing in a massive wave.
Malachar screamed as it hit him. The ritual circle shattered. The rogues across campus all dissolved simultaneously.
When the light faded, Malachar was on his knees, breathing hard.
"How?" he gasped. "That much power should have destroyed you."
"It would have. If I was alone." I shifted back to human. "But I'm not alone. I have people who care about me. Who fight with me. Who make me stronger."
"Sentiment makes you weak."
"No. Isolation makes you weak. And you've been alone for so long you've forgotten what real strength looks like."
My friends burst into the clearing, all of them shifted and ready to fight.
But the fight was over.
Malachar looked at us, at the pack standing united, and something flickered in his eyes.
Regret? Longing? I couldn't tell.
"You've won this round," he said. "But this isn't over."
"It is if you make it." I took a step toward him. "The offer still stands. Let me try to help you. No tricks. No stealing power. Just one Eclipse wolf trying to heal another living being."
"Another?" He laughed bitterly. "You think we're the same?"
"No. But I think you're tired. And scared. And desperate." My voice softened. "And I think maybe, under all the darkness, there's still a part of you that remembers what it was like to care about something other than survival."
For a moment, just a moment, his expression shifted. The hardness faded. He looked old. Tired. Human.
Then the walls came back up.
"Pretty words. But I've come too far to stop now."
He raised his hand and dark magic swirled around him.
"Wait!" I shouted.
But he was already gone, teleporting away before anyone could stop him.
The clearing fell silent.
"Is he really gone?" Nova asked.
"For now," Sienna said. "But he'll be back."
I knew she was right.
But at least we'd won tonight.
We made our way back to campus. The damage was extensive. Buildings with broken windows. Scorch marks across the courtyard. Injured students being helped to the infirmary.
But everyone was alive. That was what mattered.
The Headmaster met us at the entrance. "Is it over?"
"For now," I said.
"Then I suppose that will have to be enough." He looked exhausted. "Get some rest, all of you. We'll assess the damage in the morning."
My friends and I headed back to the dorms.
We were all bruised, bleeding, and exhausted. But alive.
In the common room, we collapsed on various couches and chairs.
"That was insane," Lyric said. "Did you really offer to help him?"
"Yeah. Seemed like the right thing to do."
"Even after everything he's done?" Aria asked.
"Especially because of everything he's done." I looked at my friends. "He's alone. Has been for probably decades. All that anger and desperation, it's just twisted him into something dark."
"You can't save everyone, Luna," Cole said gently.
"I know. But I had to try."
We sat in silence for a while, processing everything that had happened.
Eventually, people started drifting off to bed.
Cole walked me to my door again.
"You were amazing tonight," he said. "The way you pulled on all our energy, channeled it through your mark. I've never felt anything like it."
"It was intense. I could feel all of you so clearly. Your emotions, your strength, your trust."
"And it didn't hurt you? Using that much power?"
"Not like it should have. The bonds distributed the strain. Kept me from burning out."
"So the goddess was right. The bonds make you stronger."
"Make us stronger," I corrected. "This isn't just about me anymore."
He smiled. "No. It's not."
He kissed me, longer this time, deeper. When we pulled apart, we were both breathless.
"Get some sleep," he said. "We'll need to train more tomorrow."
"Always training."
"That's the life we chose."
I went inside. Nova was already asleep, snoring softly.
I changed and collapsed into bed.
But sleep didn't come easily this time.
I kept thinking about Malachar. About the look in his eyes when he'd seen us all standing together.
He'd wanted what we had. Connection. Belonging. Pack.
But he'd gone too far down a dark path to find his way back.
Or had he?
My mark pulsed gently, warm against my skin.
Miguel's essence whispered reassurance.
And through the pack bonds, I felt my friends sleeping nearby. Safe. Alive. Together.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges.
But tonight, we'd survived.
And that was enough.
