Chapter 22 — Make or Break

Lucifer:

Lana’s form wavers before me as she watches her sister begin to plummet. I try to reach Fallon and Bree, but The Creator pulls them away.

To my surprise, Lana catches Bree before she could fall and flies her to a safer spot. I don’t know what made her save Bree, but I don’t question it as I stab at the Creator’s talon and manage to seize Fallon from his hold. “Fallon,” I call to him as I desperately try to heal his wound. “I'm fine…” he sputters weakly as blood pours from his lips, “…he missed my heart.”

Flying down, I set him next to Bree and turn to a confused Lana. Her body sways as she looks around with horror, “What have I done?” she asks as the ground continues to rumble, and she watches as my brothers try to fight The Creator while they evade hurting their mates.

Moving close, I slide my hand across her silken cheek and look into her silver eyes, “Lana?”

She nods shakily, “I…I’m Lana…but I’m also Apolliana…I can feel…it hurts. I feel… I feel human…” she gasps as she clutches her chest, her face growing paler. “Lucifer…” she cries out, clinging tightly to my chest. Murmuring comforting words, I kiss her temple and hold her tight.

“What do we do?” she mutters grimly. “I’ve destroyed the world.”

Bree rises behind her sister and enfolds her in her arms, “It’s alright, Lana. At least we’ll go together,” she cries tearfully as she holds her sister close.

Fallon stands beside me, his wounds healed and places his hand on my shoulder. “We have to stop The Creator.”

I nod as I wave my hand over Bree’s form and cover her in armor similar to Lana's. I look at my son, “Get her out of here. The armor should keep her from harm until you get her out of this cavern.”

Bree shakes her head stubbornly, “No, I will not leave my sister again.”

Lana shakes her head, tears raining down her face as she looks into her sister’s eyes. “No, Lana. Go and try to find a safe place. You will only get in the way of the fight.”

Bree tearfully shakes her head and grips Lana’s hands tightly as she pleads, “But I can’t leave you, Lana. Remember my promise? I said I would never let anyone separate us, and I meant every word.”

Lana pulls her sister into her arms and embraces her tightly, “I know, Bree, and you never had. But this time, you have to let me take care of you.”

Before Bree can protest any further, Lana places her hand on Bree’s temple and knocks her unconscious.

Lana pushes Bree’s slumped form into Fallon’s arms as she croaks out, “Take care of my sister, and if anything happens to me, tell her…tell her that I love her in this life and in the next.”

Fallon gives her a grim nod as he takes his love and flies through the falling debris. Lana lifts her arm up and shoots power into the wall before them until it opens a gap leading outside. Fallon and Bree disappear into the hole a second later.

Lana swallows down a sob as she gazes back into my eyes, “I love you too, Lucifer—so much.”

Pulling her close, I kiss her deeply, savoring her taste and memorizing her curves in case I never get to do so again. Lana’s hand caresses my jaw and neck before she takes a step back and flutters her wings.

“Help your brothers while I take care of my sisters,” she calls out.

“Don’t forget that I love you, Lana. I will always love you.” I call out as I rise with her.

She smiles tearfully as she blows me a kiss and flutters away, “I will have always love you too.”

Giving her one last look, I turn to my brothers and hope that this will not be the last time I see her.
