Chapter 242: The Hard Truth

The clang of Sharon's fork hitting the plate echoed through the sudden silence. Tears welled in her eyes, threatening to spill over.

"Forget him," Fannie declared. "It's the only way forward."

"Fann," Sharon's voice rose in desperation. "How can you say that?"

But her oldest friend was undeterred, letting her own frustrations seep into her tone.

"It's the truth, isn't it? As long as you let your past demons control you; that bastard Bob, that vile Nicole; you'll never heal. You'll remain trapped, constantly sabotaging any chance at true happiness."

Sharon's shoulders slumped, the fight momentarily drained out of her. She looked stricken, as if the air had been violently expelled from her lungs. Thomas shifted uncomfortably beside Fannie, but remained silent and impassive.

She began to shake with barely restrained sobs. Fannie watched impassively, her own heart breaking even as she dealt these calculated cruelties.

It was for Sharon's own good, she reminded herself.

A bewildered silence settled over the table, broken only by the soft clinking of Thomas' spoon against his bowl. Fannie's words had landed with a brutal finality.

Sharon stared at her oldest friend in stunned disbelief, feeling as though the ground had opened up beneath her feet. Sharon had never seen this side of Fannie, this cold, calculating version that seemed to take a perverse pleasure in her pain.

Fannie had never spoken to her with such brutal candor before. But the disappointment, the frustration etched in the other woman's expression broke no quarter for niceties.

"Fann," Sharon pleaded. "Please stop." Her arms wrapped around herself in a desperate attempt to ward off the chill that had settled deep within her.

"I'm simply telling it like it is. These are facts, not some cruel twist of fate," Fannie stated, rising from her seat with a weary sigh. "By allowing Bob and Nicole to maintain such a stranglehold over your psyche, you surrendered control of your life to them. Adrian is…was…a goddamn angel, and you just let that beautiful man slip through your fingers."

"Fann…" Sharon cried.

But Fannie's expression remained steely.

"Because you need to hear the unvarnished truth, as painful as it is. I've held my tongue for too long, praying you'd pull yourself out of this darkness. But now…" She shook her head slowly, her words laced with a manufactured regret. "Now it's too late. Adrian is gone, Sharon. He finally grew tired of your constant rejection and self sabotage, tired of the constant push and pull. You were simply too broken to love."

The words lanced straight through Sharon's heart, a guttural sob tearing from her throat.

"No…nooo, please…" she choked out, the denial, a fragile shield against the onslaught of Fannie's words.

"You threw him away," Fannie said. "A fool throws away a diamond and keeps a pebble. You, my dear Sharon, chose the pebble. You are a blind, stubborn fool who destroyed the best thing she ever had."

Fannie's tough love lacerated deep, but it was borne of a place of sincere love. She hated herself for the cruelties leaving her lips, but someone needed to shock some sense into Sharon's bullheaded self destruction.

A raw, primal cry tore from Sharon's throat, echoing through the empty house. Fannie watched, her face an unreadable mask.

Fannie could offer no comfort or solace; not yet. Sometimes you had to be ruthlessly destroyed before you could finally rebuild yourself into something better.

"Don't cry, Mummy," Thomas murmured with a child's empathy.

Fannie's expression remained grimly set, her heart firming its resolve. This torturous path was the only way to save Sharon.

Beckoning for Thomas to follow, Fannie turned on her heel and stormed out, slamming the front door behind her. Sharon's anguished cries still reached her ears as the boy hurried alongside.

As the front door shut, the weight of Fannie's absence pressed down on Sharon. A single tear rolled down her cheek, followed by another, and another.

Alone in the deafening silence, a fragmented memory flickered through Sharon's mind; Adrian's voice as cold as Arctic waters.

"I don't do second chances. When I walk away from a woman, I'm done for good…"

The words, once a distant echo, now resonated with a terrifying clarity.

"Is he done with me?" she whispered to the empty room, the question hanging in the air like a death knell.

The question lacerated her soul, shattering what little remained of her self restraint.

The only answer came from the relentless rhythm of her own sobs.

Somewhere in the deepest recesses of her psyche, Fannie's calculated cruelties had finally breached Sharon's last inner walls.

Fannie's prophecy was coming to pass, she was, at long last, hitting rock bottom. The only way forward…was to let go completely.
