Chapter 234: Ties that Unbind

"Oh, Adrian, I…" Her voice trailed off, choked by unshed tears.

"It's alright," he interrupted, surprising himself with his words. He saw the raw pain in her eyes, and a sliver of the truth pieced itself together. "I believe you, Jeanne."

Her head snapped up, disbelief on her face.

"Believe me? About what?"

"About the pictures," he elaborated. "I saw the CCTV footage from the parking lot. Nothing inappropriate happened between you and that man."

Relief washed over her, flooding her cheeks with a faint rosiness.

"You saw that?" she whispered. "Thank God."

The conversation flowed more easily then. Jeanne admitted the awful online comments calling her a cheat were really weighing her down.

Adrian stood up and pulled her into a comforting hug. Emboldened by his unexpected support, Jeanne poured out her heart. She was relaxed enough to open up about her history with Ethan.

She revealed how she had known him since her university days in London, a man who loved her for who she was, not her last name or her father's fortune.

He loved her before he found out who she was.

With sincerity shining in her eyes, she confessed that he was the only man she had been with since their own young romance ended.

Adrian listened intently with understanding.

As he stroked the back of her hand in a comforting gesture, he realized they both deserved happiness, even if it meant finding it outside their marriage.

"So, what now?" he asked.

Jeanne sighed because she knew she had to let him go and also free herself.

He squeezed her hand, this media frenzy, a nightmare in disguise, was their ticket to freedom.

"Maybe these pictures surfacing is a chance for both of us to separate and be with the ones we truly love," Adrian suggested.

She shrugged helplessly, a wave of hope battling with the fear of her father's disapproval.

"I don't know. My father would never accept Ethan because of his background…"

Adrian smiled, a bittersweet twist of his lips.

"There's something else you should know. A lady who works for my father, called Kate Morris, was the one who took those photos. The CCTV caught her."

Jeanne's eyes widened as she recoiled in disgust at the woman's betrayal.

"Kate? She's the one who told me about Sharon too," Jeanne admitted quietly.

Adrian's jaw tensed, but he nodded.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure she's fired and blacklisted from every reputable hotel for this stunt. She had no right to breach our privacy like that, no matter her intentions."

"You should thank her, though," Jeanne pointed out with a wry smile. "Her meddling gave you an easy way out of our marriage."

"Perhaps," Adrian allowed. "But I hope whatever money she got was enough because, by the time I'm done, she'll be lucky to find work at a roadside motel."

Together, they decided on that course of action. Kate Morris wouldn't be getting away with this. Adrian, would make sure she was laid off.

The hospitality industry, especially high end hotels like the one where Kate worked, valued guest privacy above all else. Someone who would exploit it for a quick buck wouldn't be welcome.

But their revenge was a small victory compared to the newfound freedom they were both grasping at. The divorce would be swift and amicable, a clean break from their loveless marriage.

As Adrian walked out of Jeanne's office, a weight lifted from his shoulders. He was finally free to pursue a life with Sharon, the woman who truly held his heart.

And for Jeanne, he hoped these scandalous photos would lead her back to the happiness she deserved as well.

There was fierce tension as Jeanne, flanked by Adrian on one side and a wall of disapproval on the other, faced her parents across the grand living room.

Her father, Michael Everdeen's face was stony as he expressed his profound disappointment in his daughter's actions.

Jeanne's mother refused to even look at her, sending her icy glares instead.

"Jeanne, this is an outrage! The entire city is buzzing with these…these photos! How could you do this to the Everdeen name?" His booming voice echoed as he berated her.

Jeanne, her face pale and drawn, fought back tears.

"Dad, it's not what it looks like. It was a misunderstanding." Jeanne tried to explain, but her parents weren't having it.

Jeanne's mother's silence was laced with disappointment, a sharper weapon than any raised voice. Jeanne could feel the weight of their judgment pressing down on her, suffocating her.

"A misunderstanding?" Michael scoffed. "Those pictures told a different story entirely."

"Dad…please. You have to believe me. I wasn't doing anything wrong…"

He fixed her with a hard stare. "Tell me, Jeanne, do you love this…this actor fellow?"

Jeanne froze, realizing her father was trying to back her into a corner to catch her in a lie.

Her heart was pounding hard. She wanted to say no to protect herself from her dad's anger. But she also felt strangely free. She couldn't pretend anymore about her unhappy marriage.

Taking a deep breath, she stood up, her voice trembling slightly but firm.

"It's not that simple, Dad" she said. "I have so many feelings I'm juggling right now…"

"It's a yes or no question!" Michael's voiced boomed, making her flinch.

She swallowed hard.

"Yes…" she admitted, tears welling up in her eyes, "...yes I do love him."

Covering her face with her hands, Jeanne dissolved into sobs.

She was unable to bear the look of disappointment she knew was still painted on her parents' faces.

To her surprise, a gentle hand squeezed her shoulder. It was Adrian.

He offered her a silent message of support as pulled the weeping Jeanne into a comforting embrace. She cried brokenly against his shoulder as he rubbed her back in soothing circles.

This caught everyone by surprise.

Michael watched Adrian hug and comfort Jeanne with an unreadable expression on his face.

Even though Jeanne had done something wrong by being romantic with another man. And she even confessed her feelings for said man!

Adrian was showing more compassion in that moment than Jeanne's own parents could.

Michael couldn't help but respect and admire how understanding and caring Adrian was being toward her.

However, business was business. The Everdeen and Sterling families had planned the merger of their hotel chains for years, a deal that hinged on the marriage of their children.

Michael wasn't about to let a “misunderstanding” derail a multi-billion dollar project.

When Jeanne had collected herself somewhat, Michael cleared his throat.

"This changes nothing, Jeanne," he declared. "Regardless of…personal entanglements, I expect the merger of our hotel enterprises to still hold as planned. Your indiscretions may nullify the marriage, but not the business deal."

The sting of his words was harsh, but a fresh resolution burned within her. She would fight for her happiness, even if it meant defying her father and the expectations that had defined her life.

Jeanne nodded shakily in agreement. She felt fortunate her father wasn't trying to completely exile her from the family over this scandal.

Later, as Adrian and his father William departed the Everdeen mansion, the two men had a long overdue conversation. Adrian, lost in his thoughts, confessed about Sharon.

"There's someone else," he admitted quietly. "Someone I care about deeply."

His father who was still grieving the recent loss of his wife, surprised him with a warm smile.

"I know about Sharon," William said gruffly. "And I support your relationship with her." His eyes shone with sympathy. "After losing your mother, I understand the need to be with the one you love, no matter the circumstances."

"Really, Dad?" Adrian asked, beaming with a smile.

"Go get her, Adrian. Life's too short to waste on 'what ifs.'"

Adrian gripped his father's shoulder gratefully before racing to his car.
