Chapter 5 THE WATCHER IN THE STACKS
Alex
Alex had become very good at being invisible.
It was a skill he’d perfected over nineteen years of life. How to move through spaces without drawing attention. How to exist in the background of other people’s stories. How to watch without being watched back.
Right now, standing in the literature section of the library with a cart of books between him and the rest of the world, that skill was the only thing keeping him from completely falling apart.
Because Elias was here.
Ten feet away, running his fingers along the spines of books on the poetry shelf, Alex couldn’t breathe properly. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t do anything except stand there frozen like an idiot while his heart tried to break out of his chest.
He’d sent the letter three days ago. Three days of obsessively checking his own mailbox for a response that hadn’t come. Three days of replaying every word he’d written and wondering if it had been too much, too weird, too pathetic.
And now here was Elias, solid and real and close enough that Alex could smell his cologne. Something woody and subtle that made Alex’s brain go quiet in a way nothing else did.
The library was nearly empty. It was late afternoon on a Thursday, that dead zone between lunch and dinner when most people were either in class or pretending to study in their dorms. Alex had a work study shift, reshelving returns, which was usually boring but today felt like the universe playing a cruel joke.
Elias pulled a book from the shelf. Alex watched through the gaps between the cart’s shelves, barely breathing. He knew this routine. He’d watched it dozens of times. Elias would flip through the pages, reading random passages, and if something caught his attention, he’d buy it from the campus bookstore later.
Today it was Neruda. Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. Alex had read it last year for a class and hadn’t understood what the big deal was. But watching Elias read it, watching the way his eyes moved across the page and the corner of his mouth lifted just slightly, Alex suddenly got it.
Poetry wasn’t about the words. It was about the person reading them.
Elias was so close. Five feet now, maybe less. Close enough that Alex could see the way his hair fell across his forehead, the small coffee stain on the cuff of his jacket, the pen tucked behind his ear that he’d probably forgotten about.
Close enough that if Alex just stepped out from behind the cart and said something, anything, they could have an actual conversation.
But Alex’s feet wouldn’t move. His throat had closed up completely. All those words he’d written so easily on paper at 2 AM dissolved into nothing when faced with the reality of Elias standing right there in front of him.
This was why Anonymous was safer. On paper, Alex could be brave. He could say things that mattered. In person, he was just a nervous mess who couldn’t even manage a simple hello.
Elias closed the book and looked up.
Their eyes met.
Alex’s heart stopped.
For one impossible second, Elias was looking directly at him. Really looking. And Alex couldn’t move, couldn’t think, couldn’t do anything except stare back and hope his face wasn’t doing something humiliating like blushing or looking like he was about to cry.
“Sorry,” Elias said. His voice was softer than Alex expected. “Am I in your way?”
He thought Alex was trying to get past with the cart. He didn’t recognize him. Didn’t remember handing back that notebook in the lecture hall. Didn’t know that Alex had been carrying that two-second interaction around like a treasure for weeks.
Alex shook his head. Tried to speak. Nothing came out.
Elias waited a moment, then stepped aside, giving Alex space to pass. “Go ahead.”
Alex managed to nod. He pushed the cart forward on legs that felt like they might give out any second, keeping his eyes down, and somehow made it past Elias without completely embarrassing himself.
But as he turned the corner into the next aisle, he heard Elias’s footsteps walking away. Heard them fade down the stairs. Heard the heavy library door close in the distance.
Gone.
Alex sagged against the cart, pressing his forehead to the cool metal. His hands were shaking. His whole body was shaking.
Elias had been right there. Right there. And Alex had done nothing. Said nothing. Just stood there like a complete idiot and let the moment slip away.
He pulled out his phone with trembling fingers.
Alex: I just saw him
Alex: he was like five feet away
Alex: I couldn’t do it
Alex: I couldn’t say anything
The response came fast.
Des: ALEX
Des: You have to TALK to him
Des: you can't just pine forever
Alex: Watch me
He shoved his phone back in his pocket and went back to reshelving books. His hands were still shaking. The memory of Elias’s voice asking if he was in his way kept playing on repeat in his head. So polite. So completely unaware that Alex’s entire world had just tilted on its axis.
This was hopeless. Even if Elias had read the letter, even if he’d kept it, even if by some miracle he’d felt something reading it, he’d never connect it to Alex. Never in a million years would he look at the nervous kid reshelving books and think, that’s the person who wrote to me.
Because Alex in person was nothing like Alex on paper.
On paper, he could be articulate. Thoughtful. Brave enough to admit that thinking about someone existing under the same sky made the loneliness hurt less.
In person, he couldn’t even manage a single word.
Alex finished his shift on autopilot, reshelving the rest of the books without really seeing them. When his supervisor said he could leave early, he grabbed his bag and headed straight back to his dorm.
Des was getting ready to go out, trying on different shirts and making a mess of their tiny room.
“You look like death,” Des said, not unkindly. “What happened?”
“I saw him. In the library. We were like, this close.” Alex held up his hand, fingers almost touching. “And I completely froze.”
“Did you at least say hi?”
“I didn’t say anything. He asked if he was in my way and I just… stood there.”
Des threw a shirt at him. “You’re killing me. You know that, right? You’re literally killing me with this pining bullshit.”
“I know.”
“So write him another letter. If you can’t talk to him in person, do it on paper. Isn’t that the whole point?”
Alex sat on his bed, holding the shirt Des had thrown without really seeing it. Another letter. He could do that. On paper, he could be the person he wanted to be. The person who was brave enough to say what he felt.
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “Maybe I will.”
Des gave him a look that was half sympathy, half exasperation. “You’re a disaster. But you’re my disaster. Just… don’t give up, okay? Not yet.”
After Des left for whatever party or date or social thing he had planned, Alex pulled out his notebook. His hands had finally stopped shaking. The library was quiet in his memory now, less overwhelming, just another moment to add to his collection of almosts.
He touched his pen to paper and started writing.
Not a letter yet. Just thoughts. Just feelings he needed to get out before they ate him alive.
I saw you today. You were so close I could have reached out and touched you. But I didn’t. Because I’m not brave like that. I’m only brave on paper, where you can’t see me being terrified.
Alex stared at the words for a long time.
Then he turned to a fresh page and started over.
This time, he’d write something he could actually send.
