Chapter 26
Chapter 26
Locket of the First Flame
Claire’s POV
The silence in my quarters pressed on me like a second skin.
I sat on the edge of my bed, the locket burning against my palm—not with heat, but with presence. Like it knew I was here. Like it had waited years for my fingers to touch its surface.
My breaths were shallow. Too fast.
The whole thing seemed too otherworldly for me to fully grasp. How come this locket was buried in that stone and my presence triggered it.
The room still smelled faintly of grave dirt and Blake’s coat. I hadn’t changed clothes. My fingers trembled as I opened my palm.
The locket pulsed.
It hovered again, just slightly, as if alive. Why did the girl take me to her mother's grave.
Is there something more she knows?
I swallowed hard and gently—so gently—pried it open.
Click.
The air changed. The walls felt thinner. Time fractured.
Inside, it was exactly as I remembered: that strange violet symbol, ancient and coiled like fire turned inward, carved into the metal. It wasn’t just glowing now. It was throbbing.
Like it knew I was ready.
The second I brushed the tip of my finger to the sigil—
Pain exploded behind my eyes.
I choked on a scream.
The world snapped sideways.
I wasn’t in my room anymore.
I was burning.
The smell of smoke choked me. Screams tore through the air—not mine—hers.
A woman writhed in chains, her blonde hair tangled and soaked with blood, her arms stretched out as fire consumed the dais she stood on.
Seraphine.
She wasn't screaming for help.
She was screaming my name.
“CLAIRE—”
The flames clawed up her dress, swallowing the fabric. Her hands—bloody and shaking—clutched the same locket now burning against my chest.
It had branded me. I could feel the skin on my palm sizzling, searing like it had been carved open with a hot blade.
But I couldn’t move. Couldn’t look away.
Her eyes locked on mine through the fire—silver, and strong.
“YOU ARE THE KEY!”
I staggered back in my mind, but the vision gripped me tighter.
She wasn’t just speaking to me. She was me.
Or I was her.
Then—without warning—the flames curled up her body and devoured her.
She didn't scream again.
She smiled.
And I felt it.
The heat. The pain. The power. All of it rushed through me in a wave so violent, I collapsed to the floor.
My knees hit the wood with a crack.
I screamed.
The door burst open.
“Claire!” Blake’s voice thundered through the room. Boots scraped wood. “Claire, what the hell—”
I couldn’t answer. My body seized. The locket pressed itself tighter against my chest like it wanted to crawl inside me.
Blake was beside me in seconds. His arms wrapped around me, solid and shaking. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you—stay with me.”
His scent—smoke and pine and something deeply his—filled my lungs.
I buried my face in his shoulder and gasped. My whole body convulsed. My fingers curled around his shirt like they were the only things anchoring me to the present.
“She burned,” I rasped. “She—Blake, I saw her—”
He held me tighter. “You’re safe. You’re with me.”
“No, you don’t understand,” I sobbed. “She had this. The locket. And she called me by name. Before she—before she died—”
He leaned back just enough to cup my face in both hands. His eyes were wild with concern, but his voice stayed low. “Claire. Look at me. What did you see?”
I blinked fast, trying to breathe, trying not to fall apart again. My heart pounded like it was trying to escape my chest.
“She was chained. Screaming. The fire—it was real. I could feel it. She said I was the key.” My voice cracked. “She smiled when she died, Blake. Smiled.”
He went still.
His thumb brushed a tear off my cheek. “Claire… what are you talking about?”
I opened my hand.
The locket glowed in the center of my palm like it had been pulled from the sun.
He stared at it, then met my eyes. “What is that?”
“The locket. It was buried in her grave.”
“You said that already. But this—” he nodded at the symbol inside. “It matches my mark. I know. But Claire, this thing… it just burned you. You’re shaking.”
I gave a broken laugh. “It’s not just a memory. It’s a message. It’s a damn warning.”
He stood, dragging me with him, keeping me tucked close. His voice dropped. “You think Seraphine showed you her death for a reason.”
“I know she did.”
We stared at each other for a second—just breathing. Just existing in this space that felt way too small for how loud my emotions had become.
He reached out and gently took the locket from my hand. It floated down into his palm like it recognized him too. Like it didn’t fear him. But the second it touched his skin—
Snap.
It seared my palm again, sudden and brutal.
I cried out and snatched my hand back.
“What the hell—” Blake dropped it instantly, but the damage had already been done.
The locket had branded me.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
The symbol now burned red on my palm. A perfect match.
Blake’s jaw clenched. He took my hand, turned it gently. “Claire…”
I stared at it, my vision swimming.
And then—
The whisper returned.
That same haunting voice. Not from this world.
Right in my ear.
“She lives through you.”
I flinched back.
My body froze.
“Did you hear that?” I whispered.
Blake shook his head slowly. “No. What?”
“She said it again.” My heart slammed in my chest. “The voice from the grave. It said—she lives through me.”
Blake’s eyes dropped to my hand again.
We both stared at the mark.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both knew what this meant now.
This wasn’t over.
This wasn’t just legacy.
It was inheritance.
And the fire that had killed Seraphine?
Had just lit inside me. I didn't know what this meant but something told me I would find out sooner than I expected.
