Chapter 42 The Police Evaded The Nightclub 2
I saw Cohen in the middle of them trying to reach Laura and me, but it was in vain.
We were crouched near the stage, and many of Ma'am Rose's henchmen were shooting at the police officers.
I was very scared.
Suddenly, everything started spinning.
I was dizzy, and on impulse, I grabbed Laura's hand tightly.
She looked at me, frightened, and asked if everything was alright.
Cohen, Madi is feeling unwell—Laura shouts to him.
It was all in slow motion, Ma'am Rose appeared in front of us with a gun in her hands, her eyes conveying a deadly hatred.
"You handed us to your bitch," he said, pulling the trigger and shooting in my direction.
I didn't know how to breathe; all my air was gone.
I mentally asked God for forgiveness for everything wrong I had ever done.
I asked him not to let anything happen to my child, and the memory of Dimitri's smile came to my mind, and I smiled back.
I wanted to keep that forever, but when I was about to close my eyes, something woke me up to reality.
Laura was lying unconscious in my arms, covered in blood, and then it dawned on me: she saved me, she stepped in front of the bullet to save my life.
No, no Laura, please talk to me, look at me.
Numerous sobs escaped my mouth as I tried to wake Laura.
Don't do this to me, I need you Laura, please stay with me, please, you can't leave me now.
She wasn't answering me, so I hugged her tightly in my lap.
When I was a child, I wanted to have the power to heal; it was childish nonsense, but now, at that moment, I wished I had that power.
Seeing my friend dying in my arms was too painful.
I can't bear another loss, first it was my mother and now her.
If God wants to punish me, to see me suffer, his work is being done very well.
Isn't everything I've already been through enough?
Laura, talk to me, you can't leave me.
Remember when you said you were going to stuff me with sweets until I turned into a whale from being so fat, and that you'd camp out next to me just to be the first to feel the baby kicking?
Well, you have to be here for that.
I don't know how to live without your smile, your silly jokes.
Don't deprive me of that, Laura, please.
I looked ahead for a minute and saw Ma'am Rose being arrested with Dimitri's help.
I don't know how, but he immediately realized what I needed from him and came running to meet me along with Cohen.
Madi are you okay? — Dimitri asks, looking me up and down.
I'm fine, but Laura was shot.
Help her, Cohen, please help her.
"Someone call an ambulance quickly!" Cohen shouts.
"Her heartbeat is weak; if she doesn't get help now, she won't survive."
This is the last straw for me, it's like I'm descending into an endless abyss, there's nothing but pain and suffering, I feel arms around my body and I collapse, I cry on Dimitri's chest, his familiar scent makes me feel protected but it doesn't take away the pain that tears me apart inside.
"Come on, I'll take you home, you need a bath and some rest," Dimitri said.
"No, I'm not going to leave her alone," I said, grabbing Laura's hands.
I'll go with her, Madi.
You need to rest, I'll take care of her.
Think about the baby.
I place my hands around my belly and cry copiously.
Thanks to Laura, I am well; thanks to her, my child is safe.
Come on, love, you can go to the hospital to see her.
The ambulance's already here, let Cohen tell you if anything happens, okay? — Dimitri looks at Cohen, who nods in confirmation.
Go, Madi.
I promise I'll take care of her.
I agree, and Dimitri takes me away from there.
I look one last time at my friend being attended to by the paramedics.
I don't know how I manage to walk; I'm on autopilot.
Outside, several police cars are parked.
I spot Ma'am Rose, not Ma'am anymore.
Rose was in one of them, and anger takes over me, I break free from Dimitri's arms and go to her, slapping her across the face, followed by another, and another, and another.
"If she dies, I'll hunt you down to hell, and prison won't be enough for what I intend to do to you, you filthy bitch," I spat the words at her.
I'll be waiting for you anxiously — She throws it back.
When I try to make a move on her again, a police officer stops me and Dimitri drags me to his car.
Come in, Madi.
You can't get so upset, have you forgotten you're pregnant?
That's enough for today.
I get in the car, and Dimitri drives, I keep looking at the blood on my clothes, and the tears keep rushing down.
I don't even realize when we arrive at Dimitre's mansion; he's looking at me.
I feel like he doesn't know what to do to calm me down, but he tries anyway.
Dimitri runs his fingers across my face, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear, and said...
"Everything will be alright, it's all over now, you're free."
And for a moment I allow myself to believe his words.
