Chapter 146: Where Did This Mad Dog Come From Barking
"Nothing much."
James pretended to be cold and said, "Why are you only coming back now? Had a great time on your date with another man, didn't you?"
Emily was speechless.
"Yeah, it was great. At least I didn't have to look at someone's cold face."
Emily curved her lips into a slight smile.
Hearing this, James's face darkened even more.
"Emily, don't forget your place! How dare you talk to me like that!"
James said through gritted teeth.
Looking at James's angry expression, Emily couldn't help but find it amusing.
"Sorry, I was just joking."
"You sent Marc to follow me, and I haven't even settled that score with you yet. What are you unhappy about?"
James was speechless.
James touched his nose somewhat guiltily and awkwardly changed the subject. "By the way, there's a lead on finding your grandmother."
"What?"
At the mention of Verity, Emily dropped the playful tone, her expression turning serious.
"Mrs. Gibson is indeed with the Johnson family. To avoid alerting them, I only sent one person disguised as a maid to stay close to Mrs. Gibson and take care of her, in case the Johnson family does something desperate and hurts her."
"Thanks."
Emily said gratefully after hearing this.
"I also have some things to tell you."
Emily thought for a moment and told James everything that happened today.
It turned out Emily had been busy with her own matters all day and hadn't been on any date.
Realizing this, James was instantly overjoyed.
But he still maintained his cold expression and said with surprise, "You're saying Matilda likes Kurt? That's really hard to believe. And that Lon actually hurt himself?"
"I think Matilda and Kurt are quite well-matched. If they really get together, I'll genuinely wish them well. As for Lon's injury..."
Emily said thoughtfully, "Although the investigation showed the accident was deliberately caused, since the surveillance didn't catch anything unusual and there were too many people at the scene making evidence collection difficult, plus aside from Lon there were no other casualties, I'm afraid this accident will eventually be left unsolved."
"Lon will handle it."
James wasn't worried at all that the accident would be brushed aside. Although Lon usually seemed cold and indifferent to everything, once he got angry, anyone who crossed him wouldn't have a good ending.
...
The next day, James received an invitation.
Recently, Emerald City was hosting a three-day antique exhibition, and many prominent families were on the guest list.
When Marc handed the invitation to James, he was sitting in the courtyard enjoying the sun. Xanthe had just returned from outside and overheard Marc's words.
"What can a blind man see at an exhibition? He'll only be laughed at and embarrass the Thomas family."
Xanthe said sarcastically, "I think, for the sake of the Thomas family's reputation, you'd better stay home."
Hearing this, James didn't turn around, but his face darkened and his fists on the wheelchair armrests clenched tightly.
"Which dog is barking? Making so much noise so early in the morning."
Emily walked over from the other side of the courtyard. She glanced coldly at Xanthe and sneered, "Oh, it's a mad dog dressed in fancy clothes."
"You! How dare you insult me!"
Xanthe's expression changed.
"Did I insult you?"
Emily looked innocent. "I didn't name anyone specifically. Please don't flatter yourself."
"You... Let's see how long you can stay smug!"
Xanthe's face darkened with anger. Unable to win the argument with Emily, she could only wave her hand and leave in a huff.
After Xanthe left, Emily slowly turned her gaze to James sitting in the courtyard, bathed in sunlight.
James's strong profile was gilded with light in the sunshine. Even sitting in a wheelchair, he still looked like a god descended from heaven, impossible to look away from.
Looking at James, Emily's heart suddenly skipped a beat.
"I've heard about this antique exhibition. They say all the prominent families in Emerald City have been invited, and the antique appraisal master Robbie Ellis is coming too."
Emily paused and slowly walked to James's side.
"Robbie?"
Marc looked at the invitation in his hand, his brows slightly furrowed.
"Yes, Mr. Ellis is an expert in antique authentication. I heard he has a sharp eye and no fake can escape his detection."
Emily said calmly.
"I've heard the rumors about Mr. Ellis too. They say he's mysterious and no one has ever seen his true face. This antique exhibition will be Mr. Ellis's first public appearance, so many people will definitely go just to see him."
Marc nodded and said.
James listened silently to the conversation beside him and gave a mocking smile without speaking.
Emily had been quietly watching James's expression and naturally didn't miss the mockery on his face.
"James, if you want to go to the exhibition, I can go with you."
James kept a cold face and said nothing.
"Are you not interested in Mr. Ellis?"
Emily looked at James's vacant, hazy eyes and asked softly.
Of course he had no interest in any Mr. Ellis. What he cared about now was...
"Why are you so good to me?"
James asked coldly.
What kind of question is that?
Emily was slightly taken aback.
"Because I'm your wife in name, so naturally I have the duty to take care of you and look after you."
"Just because of that? If it weren't me, you'd be good to that person too, wouldn't you?"
James was clearly unsatisfied with Emily's answer and asked in a cold, harsh tone.
"I don't know."
Emily answered honestly.
To her surprise, James's face darkened even more.
Marc watched one person sulking and the other looking confused, holding back his laughter.
To keep from laughing out loud, he quickly covered it with a cough, then asked James, "Mr. Thomas, will you be attending the exhibition?"
"Of course I'm going!"
"I understand, I'll send a reply then."
Marc nodded at Emily and left.
After Marc left, Emily sat down beside James, closing her eyes to enjoy the warm sunshine.
For a while, the courtyard was very quiet. Neither spoke, but it didn't feel awkward.
James couldn't see, but he could sense the gentle breathing beside him and knew Emily was still there.
This feeling actually made James's constantly tense mood relax a little.
Emily, if you really are Mason's mother, then I won't let you go.
James suddenly remembered that today was the day to pick up the DNA test results from the hospital.
His momentarily relaxed mood instantly tensed up again.
