Out from the rustling bushes came Achilles, his imposing figure emerging into the clearing. In his hand, he dragged the lifeless body of a man. Shea's eyes widened, a mix of relief and horror washing over her. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out as her gaze fixed on the corpse.
Achilles' face was grim, his jaw clenched as he approached. "Sorry for leaving you alone like that," he said, his voice low and tinged with regret.
Shea struggled to process the scene before her. Part of her wanted to run to Achilles, grateful for his return. But the sight of the dead man made her stomach churn. She took an involuntary step back, her hand covering her mouth.
"Who... who is that?" she finally managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper.
Achilles glanced down at the body, his expression hardening. "The one who was following us. A werewolf sent to capture you."
Shea's mind reeled. More werewolves? And they were after her? She looked at Achilles, searching his face for answers. "Why? Why are they after me?"
Achilles sighed, releasing his grip on the dead man. The body slumped to the ground with a dull thud. "It's complicated, Shea. There's a lot you don't know yet."
He took a step towards her, his piercing blue eyes meeting hers. "But I promise, I'll explain everything. Right now, we need to move. It's not safe here."
Shea nodded numbly, her gaze drifting back to the corpse. She couldn't help but wonder how many more would die because of her presence in Lockewood. The weight of her father's death, and now this unknown werewolf, pressed down on her shoulders.
Achilles moved closer, placing a gentle hand on her arm. "Hey," he said softly, drawing her attention back to him. "I know this is a lot to take in. But I need you to trust me, okay?"
Shea nodded, her eyes meeting Achilles' intense gaze. What choice did she have but to trust him? Despite the chaos swirling around her, Achilles had never appeared dangerous or life-threatening. In fact, he felt like a safe harbor in the storm that her life had become.
Achilles moved swiftly to the car, popping open the trunk. With practiced efficiency, he hefted the dead werewolf's body and deposited it inside, closing the lid with a soft thud. He returned to Shea, his face set in determination.
"Get in," he said, gesturing towards the passenger door. "We need to-"
Achilles suddenly froze, his nostrils flaring. His head snapped towards the dense forest, eyes narrowing as he scanned the treeline. Shea watched as his entire body tensed, like a predator sensing danger.
"What is it?" she whispered, fear creeping into her voice.
Achilles didn't respond immediately. His jaw clenched, and Shea could see the muscles in his neck straining. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and urgent.
"Another one," he growled. "Get in the car. Now."
Shea didn't hesitate. She yanked open the passenger door and slid inside, her heart pounding in her chest. Achilles remained outside, his stance protective as he continued to survey their surroundings.
The forest seemed to hold its breath. The usual chirping of birds and rustling of leaves had gone silent, as if nature itself sensed the impending danger. Shea gripped the edge of her seat, her knuckles turning white as she waited for whatever was coming.
A deep voice echoed from the woods, breaking the tense silence. "Well, well, Von Lunar. You've made quite a mess, haven't you?"
Achilles tensed, his eyes narrowing as a man in his late thirties emerged from the treeline. Despite his age, the newcomer exuded strength and confidence, his muscular frame moving with predatory grace.
"Your henchman wasn't much of a challenge," Achilles replied coldly, positioning himself between the man and the car where Shea sat.
The man's lips curled into a smirk. "No surprise there, given your lineage. The Von Lunar family has always been... formidable."
Achilles inhaled deeply, his nostrils flaring as he caught the man's scent. His eyes widened slightly in recognition. "Mid-rank werewolf," he stated, more to himself than anyone else.
"Correct," the man nodded, looking almost pleased. "You've got a good nose on you, boy."
Shea watched the exchange from inside the car, her heart pounding. The casual way they discussed werewolves and ranks made her head spin. This was all so surreal, yet undeniably real.
Achilles' voice cut through her thoughts, sharp and demanding. "What do you want?"
The silence was shattered by a deep, gravelly voice echoing from the woods. "Well, well. What do we have here?"
Achilles tensed, his eyes scanning the treeline. Shea held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched from inside the car.
The man's gaze shifted to Shea, his eyes glinting with predatory interest. Achilles stepped forward, his voice low and dangerous.
"Leave her alone. This doesn't concern her."
The man chuckled, a sound devoid of humor. "Oh, but it does. More than you know."
Achilles' jaw clenched. "Shea is under the protection of the Von Lunar family. She belongs with us. Walk away now, or you won't walk away at all."
Shea's eyes widened at Achilles' words. Belongs to them? What did that mean? Fear and confusion warred within her as she watched the tense standoff.
The man snorted, clearly unimpressed. "Last I checked, the girl didn't belong to anyone. But my boss has... let's say, a vested interest in her."
"Your boss can take his interest elsewhere," Achilles growled. "This is your last warning. Leave, or you'll be joining your friend in the trunk."
A cruel smile played across the man's lips. "Big words from a pup. You think you can take on me?"
The air between them seemed to crackle with tension. Achilles' muscles coiled, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. The man's posture shifted subtly, his own body preparing for conflict.
Shea held her breath, her knuckles white as she gripped the car door handle. The forest around them had gone eerily silent, as if nature itself was waiting to see how this confrontation would play out.
