Shea's heart raced as she stared up at the mysterious man, his intense blue eyes boring into hers. His grip on her arms tightened, causing her to wince in pain.
"What are you doing here?" he demanded, his voice low and urgent. "I told you to leave Lockewood. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
Shea tried to pull away, but his hold was too strong. "You're hurting me," she gasped.
Instantly, he released her, a flicker of regret crossing his face. He took a step back, running a hand through his tousled hair in frustration.
"I told you to leave Lockewood and never return," he said, his tone softening slightly but still laced with urgency. "Why are you here at the college?"
Shea rubbed her arms where he had gripped her, her mind reeling from the encounter. She couldn't understand why this stranger seemed so invested in her safety, yet so determined to push her away.
"I have questions that need answers," she replied, her voice steady despite her racing pulse. "This town holds secrets about my father, and I won't leave until I uncover the truth."
The man's jaw clenched, his eyes darting around the hallway as if expecting danger to materialize at any moment. "You're putting yourself in grave danger," he warned. "The less you know, the safer you'll be."
Shea's eyes flashed with defiance, her initial fear giving way to determination. She squared her shoulders and met the stranger's gaze head-on.
"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice steady and unwavering. "What are your intentions? Why do you care so much about my safety?"
The man's expression tightened, a muscle in his jaw twitching as he clenched his teeth. He glanced around once more, ensuring they were still alone in the secluded corner of the hallway.
"It doesn't matter who I am," he said, his voice low and terse. "All you need to know is that I'm trying to protect you. Being away from Lockewood is the only way you can be safe."
Shea shook her head, frustration building within her. "That's not good enough. You can't just show up, save my life, and then expect me to leave without any explanation. I deserve answers."
The stranger's eyes softened for a moment, a flicker of something - regret? sympathy? - passing across his face. But it vanished as quickly as it appeared, replaced by his usual stoic expression.
"You don't understand the forces at play here," he said, his tone grave. "The less you know, the better. Your father-"
He cut himself off abruptly, as if realizing he'd said too much. Shea's heart leapt at the mention of her father.
"What about my father?" she pressed, taking a step closer to him. "You knew him, didn't you? Please, I need to know what happened to him."
The man's expression hardened once more. "Forget about your father. Forget about Lockewood. Just leave, and don't look back. It's the only way to ensure your survival."
Shea opened her mouth to press for more information when a voice rang out across the hallway.
"Achilles!"
The man in front of her tensed, his head snapping around at the sound of his name. Shea's eyes widened, finally putting a name to the mysterious stranger.
Achilles' jaw clenched, his annoyance palpable as he caught sight of the approaching figure. "Ryder," he growled, the name dripping with disdain.
A tall, muscular young man with dirty blond hair and a cocky grin sauntered towards them. His bright blue eyes gleamed with mischief as he took in the scene before him.
"Well, well," Ryder drawled, his gaze sliding from Achilles to Shea. "What do we have here? Making friends already, Achilles? That's not like you at all."
Achilles stepped forward, partially shielding Shea from Ryder's view. "This doesn't concern you, Ryder. Move along."
Ryder's grin widened, a predatory glint in his eyes. "Oh, but I think it does. Especially when it involves our new classmate." He leaned to the side, meeting Shea's gaze. "I don't believe we've been properly introduced. I'm Ryder Hawkins. And you are...?"
Before Shea could respond, Achilles cut in. "She was just leaving," he said firmly, shooting Shea a pointed look.
Ryder chuckled, the sound grating on Shea's nerves. "Now, now, Achilles. That's not very hospitable of you. We should be welcoming new students, not chasing them away." He took a step closer, his eyes never leaving Shea. "What do you say we show you around campus? I promise I'm much better company than this sourpuss."
Shea hesitated, torn between her desire for answers and her instinctive wariness of Ryder's overly friendly demeanor. She glanced at Achilles, noting the tension in his shoulders and the warning in his eyes.
Shea shifted uncomfortably under Ryder's intense gaze. She averted her eyes, focusing on the textbooks clutched to her chest.
"I... I actually have a class right now," she mumbled, her voice barely audible above the din of the hallway.
Achilles noticed her discomfort, his eyes narrowing as he turned to face Ryder. "You heard her," he growled. "Now piss off."
Ryder's cocky smile never wavered. He held up his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. No need to get your panties in a twist, Achilles." He winked at Shea. "I'll see you around, new girl. Count on it."
With that, Ryder sauntered away, his confident stride parting the crowd of students like water.
Achilles watched him go, his jaw clenched tight. Once Ryder was out of sight, he turned back to Shea, his piercing blue eyes boring into her.
"This is your final warning," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Leave Lockewood. Now. While you still can."
Before Shea could respond, Achilles spun on his heel and strode down the hallway.
The shrill ring of the bell jolted Shea back to reality. She blinked, her mind still reeling from the intense encounter with Achilles. Fumbling with the thick file in her hands, she scanned the room numbers printed on each door.
As fate would have it, Achilles was heading in the same direction. Shea found herself trailing behind him, her steps awkwardly matching his brisk pace. She couldn't help but notice the annoyed glance he threw over his shoulder.
Achilles quickened his stride, but Shea's longer legs kept her right beside him. He let out an exasperated sigh. "Why are you following me?"
Shea's cheeks flushed. "I'm not following you," she retorted, waving her file. "I'm trying to find my classroom. Not everything revolves around you, you know."
Achilles rolled his eyes and came to an abrupt stop in front of a classroom door. "Fine. Whatever. Just... go find your room and leave me alone."
"Gladly," Shea muttered, turning to walk away. But as she glanced at the room number, her jaw dropped. It matched the one in her file perfectly.
She turned back to Achilles, a mix of disbelief and amusement on her face. "Um... I think we might be classmates."
Achilles stared at her, his expression a comical blend of frustration and resignation. "You've got to be kidding me."
