Shea's brow furrowed, her hand still on the doorknob. "What do you mean, Dr. Hargrove?"
The principal's smile softened, but her eyes remained unreadable. "Oh, you know. College life can be quite the adjustment. New experiences, new people – it can all be a bit overwhelming at first."
She leaned back in her chair, fingers steepled. "I just want to make sure you're prepared for the challenges that come with this transition."
Shea nodded slowly, her mind racing. There was something in Dr. Hargrove's tone, a weight to her words that hinted at more than just typical freshman concerns. Did she know about the werewolves? About the danger lurking in the shadows of Lockewood?
Aunt Penelope placed a gentle hand on Shea's shoulder. "We appreciate your concern, Eleanor. I'm sure Shea will settle in just fine."
"Of course," Dr. Hargrove replied, her gaze never leaving Shea's face. "We're here to support you every step of the way."
Shea swallowed hard, forcing a smile. "Thank you, Dr. Hargrove. I'll keep that in mind."
As they stepped out into the hallway, Shea's mind whirled with possibilities. The principal's warning echoed in her ears, laden with unspoken meaning.
As they walked away from the principal's office, Shea's mind buzzed with questions. She glanced at Aunt Penelope, her voice low. "Aunt, did you catch that? The way Dr. Hargrove warned me to be careful?"
Penelope nodded, her eyes scanning the hallway. "I did. Eleanor knows more than she lets on, Shea. She's aware of the werewolves, but she doesn't know that you're in the loop."
Shea's eyebrows shot up. "Really? How long has she known?"
"For quite some time," Penelope replied, guiding them towards a quiet corner. "Eleanor was close to your father, you know. Vincent wasn't just a student here – he later became a beloved teacher as well."
Shea's heart swelled with pride. "Dad taught here?"
Penelope smiled warmly. "Oh yes. Biology and veterinary sciences. He was brilliant, Shea. The students adored him, and Eleanor respected him immensely. She was devastated when..."
Her voice trailed off, but Shea understood. The loss of Vincent had rippled through the entire community.
"Your father had a way of inspiring people," Penelope continued. "He brought out the best in his students, encouraged their curiosity. Eleanor saw that spark in him from the beginning."
Shea leaned against the wall, trying to process this new information. Her father – brilliant teacher, respected colleague, and secret werewolf. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly coming together, but the full picture remained frustratingly out of reach.
"So, Dr. Hargrove knows about the supernatural side of Lockewood," Shea mused. "But she doesn't know I'm investigating?"
Penelope shook her head. "No, and it's best to keep it that way for now. The fewer people who know your true purpose here, the safer you'll be."
Shea walked with Aunt Penelope back to the parking lot, the weight of their conversation heavy on her mind. As they reached the van, Penelope turned to her niece, eyes filled with a mixture of pride and concern.
"You be careful now, Shea. Keep your wits about you and your eyes open."
Shea nodded, forcing a smile. "I will, Aunt Penelope. Don't worry."
They embraced, and Shea felt a surge of warmth and safety in her aunt's arms. As they parted, Penelope cupped Shea's face in her hands.
"You're so much like your father. He'd be proud of you, you know."
With a final wave, Penelope climbed into the van and drove away, leaving Shea standing alone in the parking lot. She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and turned back towards the college buildings.
The campus buzzed with activity as students rushed to and fro, their chatter and laughter filling the air. Shea clutched the thick file Dr. Hargrove had given her, flipping it open to find her class schedule. Her first lecture was set to begin in just fifteen minutes.
As she navigated the winding paths between buildings, Shea couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She glanced around, catching a few curious stares from her fellow students. Was it just normal interest in a new face, or something more sinister?
The biology building loomed ahead, its ivy-covered walls a stark contrast to the modern science facilities she'd grown used to in the city. Shea checked her schedule once more, confirming the room number before pushing open the heavy wooden doors.
Inside, the hallway was quieter, the sounds of her footsteps echoing off the polished floors.
Shea walked briskly down the main hall, her eyes darting from side to side as she navigated through the throng of students. The corridor buzzed with activity, backpacks jostling and voices echoing off the high ceilings. She clutched her file tighter, determined not to get lost in the chaos.
Without warning, a strong hand gripped her arm and yanked her sideways. Shea's heart leapt into her throat as she found herself pulled behind a massive stone pillar, hidden from the bustling crowd. She whirled around, ready to confront her assailant, when her eyes widened in shock.
Standing before her was the man from last night - the werewolf who had saved her life. Up close, his features were even more striking. Piercing blue eyes bore into hers, framed by a chiseled face that could have been carved from marble. His golden hair fell in tousled waves, catching the light filtering through the nearby windows.
"You," Shea breathed, her voice barely above a whisper.
The man's jaw clenched, his gaze darting around as if checking for eavesdroppers. When he spoke, his voice was low and urgent.
"I told you to leave Lockewood. What are you doing here?"
Shea straightened her spine, meeting his intense stare with one of her own. "I have every right to be here. This is my father's hometown, and I'm not going anywhere until I get answers."
A flicker of something - respect, perhaps? - passed through the man's eyes. He leaned in closer, his breath warm on her cheek as he whispered, "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into, Shea Wolfe."
