Achilles and Shea stood frozen for a moment, the awkward realization settling over them like a heavy fog. With a groan, Achilles pushed open the door and strode inside, leaving Shea to trail behind him.
As they entered the classroom, a hush fell over the students. Shea felt the weight of numerous stares, her skin prickling under the scrutiny. She glanced around, expecting to meet curious gazes, but instead found herself on the receiving end of icy glares from nearly every female in the room.
Confused, she followed their line of sight, only to realize they weren't looking at her at all. Their eyes were locked on Achilles, who seemed oblivious to the attention as he slouched into a seat at the back of the room.
Shea couldn't help but notice the way the girls' eyes followed his every move, drinking in his tall frame and chiseled features. Some twirled their hair absently, while others leaned forward in their seats, as if drawn by an invisible force.
When they noticed Shea looking their way, however, their expressions quickly soured. Daggers shot from their eyes, silently warning her to keep her distance from the brooding newcomer.
Shea stifled a laugh at the absurdity of it all. Here she was, trying to unravel a supernatural mystery and avenge her father's death, and instead she found herself in the middle of a high school drama.
She slid into an empty seat, pointedly ignoring both Achilles and his newfound fan club.
Shea hesitated for a moment, scanning the room for any other available seats. To her dismay, the only empty spot left was right next to Achilles. With a resigned sigh, she made her way to the back of the classroom.
As she approached, Achilles glanced up, his piercing blue eyes narrowing in annoyance. He slouched further in his seat, as if trying to put as much distance between them as possible in the confined space.
Shea slid into the chair, acutely aware of the tension radiating off him. She couldn't help but feel a strange pull towards him, despite his cold demeanor. There was something about Achilles that intrigued her, a connection she couldn't quite explain. Perhaps it had something to do with her father and the mysteries surrounding Lockewood.
Just as she was about to open her mouth to speak, Achilles leaned in close, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I thought I made myself clear. You need to leave Lockewood."
His breath tickled her ear, sending an involuntary shiver down her spine. Shea turned to face him, her jaw set in defiance.
"And I thought I made myself clear. I'm not going anywhere until I get answers."
"You have no idea what you're getting yourself into," he repeated the same thing.
Before Shea could respond, the professor walked in, calling the class to attention. She turned away from Achilles, her mind racing. What did he know that made him so adamant about her leaving? And why did she feel drawn to him despite his warnings?
The professor stood there in the classroom, a stack of papers tucked under her arm. She glanced down at the file in her hand, then looked up with a warm smile.
"Ah, I see we have a new face among us today. Shea Wolfe, is it? Welcome to Lockewood College. Why don't you stand up and introduce yourself to the class?"
Shea's heart raced as she slowly rose from her seat. She could feel Achilles' eyes boring into her, but she forced herself to focus on the rest of the room.
"Hi everyone," she began, her voice steadier than she felt. "I'm Shea Wolfe. I just moved here from the city to study... and to learn more about my family's history in Lockewood."
As she spoke, Shea noticed the varied reactions from her classmates. The women in the room seemed to eye her with barely concealed hostility, their gazes flicking between her and Achilles. The men, on the other hand, regarded her with open curiosity and interest.
One girl in the front row whispered something to her friend, both of them giggling and shooting Shea a look that could only be described as venomous. Shea swallowed hard, trying to maintain her composure.
"Thank you, Shea," the professor said, motioning for her to sit back down. "I'm sure you'll find Lockewood has quite a rich history. Now, let's begin our lesson, shall we?"
As Shea sank back into her chair, she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd just stepped into a hornet's nest. The tension in the room was palpable, and she had a sinking feeling that it wasn't just about academic rivalries.
As the professor dismissed the class, students shuffled out of the room, their chatter fading into the hallway. Shea gathered her things slowly, acutely aware of Achilles' presence beside her. When the last student exited, leaving them alone, Achilles pulled up his hoodie, shrouding his face in shadow.
Without turning to look at her, he spoke, his deep voice low and measured. "What are you really doing here, Shea? What do you hope to accomplish in Lockewood?"
Shea's hand stilled on her notebook. She took a deep breath, steeling herself. "I told you. I'm here to learn about my family's history."
Achilles scoffed. "Don't play dumb. You know exactly what I mean."
She turned to face him, her eyes blazing with determination. "Fine. You want the truth? I'm here to find out what happened to my father. Why he was killed. And who's responsible."
His jaw clenched visibly. "You're digging into things you don't understand. It's dangerous."
"Then help me understand," Shea challenged. "You clearly know more than you're letting on. Why are you so determined to make me leave?"
Achilles leaned back in his chair, his piercing blue eyes studying her intently. "Because the truth you're seeking might destroy you. Some secrets are better left buried."
"Not these," Shea insisted. "My father died protecting us. I need to know why."
A heavy silence fell between them. Achilles seemed to be wrestling with some internal conflict. Finally, he spoke again, his voice tinged with resignation.
"You're not going to let this go, are you?"
Shea shook her head firmly. "Never."
Achilles opened his mouth to respond, but his eyes suddenly darted to the doorway. Shea followed his gaze, her breath catching in her throat as she saw a figure looming there.
It was Ryder.
He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed over his broad chest, a smirk playing on his lips. His letterman jacket stretched tight across his shoulders, the wolf paw symbol glinting on the gold chain around his neck.
"Well, well," Ryder drawled, his eyes flickering between Achilles and Shea. "What do we have here? A little private tutoring session?"
Achilles tensed, his posture shifting subtly. Shea could feel the sudden charge in the air, like electricity crackling between the two men.
"This doesn't concern you, Ryder," Achilles growled, his voice low and threatening.
Ryder pushed off the doorframe, sauntering into the room with exaggerated casualness. "Oh, I think it does. See, I'm very interested in getting to know our new classmate." He turned his attention to Shea, flashing her a dazzling smile. "I don't believe we've been properly introduced. Ryder Hawkins, at your service."
Shea hesitated, caught between Ryder's charm and the palpable tension radiating from Achilles. "Shea Wolfe," she replied cautiously.
"Wolfe, huh?" Ryder's eyebrows shot up, a look of recognition crossing his face. "Now that's an interesting name around these parts."
Achilles stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "Back off, Hawkins," he warned, stepping between Ryder and Shea.
Ryder held up his hands in mock surrender, but his eyes glinted with challenge. "Easy there, big guy. I'm just being friendly." He peered around Achilles, winking at Shea. "Don't let this grump scare you off. There's plenty of fun to be had in Lockewood if you know where to look."
