Chapter 40 Her fear
Lilac turned into a block of wood.
"Where does it hurt? The driver will bring ointment," Eric said and she went red. He wanted to see? But she had hurt under her breast! Lilac looked away.
"I will put the ointment on when I get home. You can drop me off," she said.
"Drop you off? No," Eric scoffed and Lilac could read his mind. He wanted to keep and eye on her at all times.
"All of our homes are compromised, we will get you some change of cloth then you take me to that apartment you stayed in while in uni," he said and she paused. He was really aware of all the properties she owned. It was a small studio flat, but it was hers.
"Come on," He said and got out of the car. Oy when she stepped out did Lilac realize that they were in his home as she would prefer to call it, but this was their marital home, she had lived in after they married, but he avoided coming here because she was always here. She had not returned here since she left for the cruise ship. She no more trusted living in a home he controlled, which was full of his staff. But she had returned again.
Lilac felt a bitter taste in her mouth. There used to be times she had hoped he would return home with her. But not anymore. This was his home not hers.
Lilac had been in Eric’ home for more than a few minutes packing when she heard noise downstairs. She ignored kred it and finished packing quickly. She did not intend to return here, so it was best she used this time to pack all things she could ever want to take with her.
When she was done carefully descended the stairs and paused when she heard talking, followed by a scream and a gunshot. She jumped at the sound and wanted to escape back to her room, but she was too slow.
A large sack leaking blood was being dragged by wolf away from the stairs. She had been spotted, because she heard Eric say, “Stop.”
“I just wanted to tell you that I was done packing. This has nothing to do with me!"
Lilac dreaded this moment very much. She thought of all the things she had done wrong that got her to this point. Shy dogs she keep ending up in these situations.
"What did you see?" Eric asked.
“ I promise I saw nothing.” Lilac said. She had a feeling it was best to deny everything. But Eric remained paused, staring at her as though he had just discovered something interesting. He had noticed a while back that the underworld dealings really scared her. And the thought of his involvement scared her even more. But every time he saw her reaction, he could not look away, nor stop himself from teasing her.
“How am I sure you saw nothing? ”
“Well, if I did, I will take it to the grave,” she promised.
“You are right, it will be safer in the grave; if not you, at least my secret, ” Eric said, and Lilac's face fell. She knew he had killed someone and there was no explanation her mind could make up that did not reach that conclusion. Or maybe wolf did, but it must have been on his orders. Was he going to hold this over her? Could he give her a break?
“So now what? ” she asked.
When he saw the tired look on her face, for some reason he was not pleased. He did enjoy her placid expressions, and her empty look bothered him greatly. Feeling slightly uncomfortable, and definitely irritated, Eric sneered.
"You sure have no fear," He said. He was not sure if he wanted her to be afraid of him or not, but since that morning on the ship, her eyes lit up sometimes and burned the others. He did not like to see it look dead. Eric felt that he may have gone crazy.
“I will do everything you ask, I will not leave your sight if you don’t want me to, ”
He turned around and looked at her small figure by the corner, and something about her flat look irritated him.
“Where is your fighting spirit? ” he asked. For some reason, his words sparked a thought in her head; did he enjoy this? Did he enjoy watching her afraid? At that moment, she stood and stared at him straight in the face.
“What are you going to do with me? ” she asked.
“What do you imagine I would do? ” he asked.
“Are you going to kill me? ” she asked him, and his eyes narrowed. Her emotions were consistent right now compared to other times. Usually she was scared one moment and brave the next, it was normal for her reaction to bounce between cowardice and bravery. Sometimes she dared not look at him, the next time she was full of courage. He had to admit, his eyes have been glued to her more than usual. Maybe he was curious?
“How could I kill my wife?” he asked and she nodded walked right past him down the stairs with her large luggage.
“That is all you are taking? I thought women had a lot of luggage. You lived her for a while, right?” he asked.
She paused at the door and looked back at him, “I have no important things here except these” she said and left him standing there. He understood what she meant. She did not plan on returning.
Eric seemed to have finally found that thing about her that constantly drew his eyes in. Even if this girl was afraid, she was still utterly daring and he was sure of one thing. She was afraid, alright.
As Lilac walked away, her heart beat sounded in her chest. But, she was determined to walk out of his house and leave. She knew very little about him, she was not sure if he would change his mind. She had completely forgotten that he was to leave with her. While he was still sure she should not die, Lilac intended to leave quickly. Before the door could close a hand interrupted it out of nowhere. Her heart leaped to her throat at the sight of the person on the other side.
“I will take you home, ” he said. And she recalled he had said something about coming with her to the studio apartment.
