Chapter 38 Bloodline
Eric's gaze stayed on Lilac as she took off her clothes. When their eyes met, Lilac stiffened and turned around to back Eric seated on the bed. This situation made Lilac's blood boil.
Ignoring the burning gaze behind her, Lilac quickly dressed, changing into a black dress.
Seeing her done, Eric got up and gestures to Lilac's dressing table then to the rest of the room, causing her to frown in confusion.
"Take your ID, birth certificate and even passport if possible, you never know if you will need it," he said and Lilac walked over to her dressing room and took out documents hidden in her dresser and walked out of the room.
After a while, Lilac was sitting in the back seat of a dark Maybach. The driver nodded to Eric as he drove off.
Lilac could not calm down. She contemplated making a run for it when the car stops but she did not feel she could outrun a bullet, so she threw the thought away.
She knew that right now, Eric needed her because she was obviously the one who had the inheritance. So lilac felt she might as well use this. She also felt Eric was right about one thing, this inheritance might be too damn for her to carry around. Her grandfather was considered a godfather in some underground circles and Lilac knew what an inheritance from him meant. It was best to give it to Eric. But why should she give it for free?
"Since you are already going to take it, you should at least have the good manners to pay for it," Lilac said and looking out the window. She could still feel Eric's gaze on her.
"Oh? You want me to buy it off you?" Eric asked.
"No. You want to buy it off me. Whatever this is, it is probably the reason you married me, isn't it? That makes it important. If so, buy if off me. Or else how you came about it will always be questioned," Lilac answered. She had racked her brain on how to deal with this situation. Whatever Eric was taking her to do, what ever was the inheritance was, all she could do was protect herself.
Whatever that inheritance was, it was a hot plate that could burn her. She needed to sell it off. Since he wanted it, fine. He should pay for it.
Eric considered what she had said. He was no fool he could tell what she was trying to do, or better what she was trying to avoid. She must have guessed the inheritance was too dangerous and decided to have proof of sale to protect herself after the divorce. When he thought of this, Eric's eyes darkened. Everything was all for a divorce. It seemed that was all she considered these days. For some reason, the more she wanted it, the more he refused to give it to her.
"True. Buying it would be best," Eric said. Only then did Lilac look away from the window and meet his gaze.
"How much do you want for it?" Eric asked.
"How much do you think the inheritance is worth?" Lilac asked and Eric chuckled in response. His low voice seemed to vibrate through the expensive leather seats.
He took out his phone and fiddled with it for a minute, then Lilac received a notification from her foreign bank account of a transfer. At a glance, she saw two hundred million dollars and her breath hitched slightly. She could not help feeling shocked. With this, it did not matter if she left the marriage with nothing.
She looked up at Eric with shock on his face. That kind of money was something she could only dream off.
"Check your email for a document. Sign it," the man said.
Soon, an email arrived and Lilac read through the document. When she saw what was written, she went pale. This was no sale. The document declared the inheritance to be joint spousal property with the authority left to Eric to access, manage and use as they please. But it was clear that they held equal responsibility for what was done with it. Lilac's hand shook.
"You don't actually expect me to sign this," she protested.
"Yes, you will," Eric said patting the gun resting on his lap. Lilac did not believe he would kill her at this point. It was clear he needed her. But she was sure that torture was not below Eric. Being his wife did not matter.
She quickly signed and looked up to meet Eric's eyes.
The street light hit his eyes, turning it to an odd shade of grey. For a second, he looked like someone else. Lilac searched her memory for this person. The sense of nostalgia growing. But no matter how much she searched, there was nothing. She immediately brushed the thought away.
When she came to, she realized Eric was watching her with interested. There was a hint of mirth in his eyes as they held his for a moment, before Eric pulled back.
"What do you need me to do?" Lilac asked. The money had been paid. There was no turning back.
"There is a safety deposit box I need the consent from a Hart to access. Only someone from your grandfather's bloodline can access it. You will walk in, sign the consent form, we talk the box and leave," Eric explained.
"This is all?" Lilac asked. "Does this not mean, my sister could so so as well?"
"No. Only you would do," Eric answered cryptically as the car can to a stop. Lilac had questions, but they had already arrived . She immediately looked out the window ast where they were and instantly went pale.
She knew this bank. This was not a bank anyone wanted to deceive. People have turned up dead trying to take something from here. Word was that this bank served the underground businesses, businesses that were illegal world wide.
Lilac cursed internally. Sure, where else would Grandpa bank?
As she got out of the car, Lilac's heart rate spiked.
"It's 3 Am. What bank opens at 3 am?" Lilac asked nervously.
"This one," Eric answered as he handed his gun to his driver and pulled Lilac towards the bank.
"Are you absolutely sure they need any body of my grandfather's bloodline or just him?" Lilac asked, "This is not the bank to get details wrong."
Eric looked down at her in amusement. He understood her worry. This was the reason he had not taken out what was in the bank. He could not convince Lilac to willingly go and if the bank found fowl play, there would be issues. Besides, he had questions about her family's bloodline and had to be sure he was walking in with the right person.
"You have heard of them, I see. Don't worry. You will do just fine," he said as they stepped into the bank.
The security at the door let them in easily and they were shown to the back.
"Mr Black, a late night withdrawal?" A man looked dup from his computer and smiled politely as he asked this.
"I need access to this deposit box," Eric said, sliding a card to the man. The man looked up, then at Eric. He typed away at his computer for a few seconds before looking up.
"Mr Black, this deposit box is not assigned to you," he said and Lilac's heart dropped.
"It is under custodianship of Lilac Hart. She can access it, can she not?' Eric asked and the man looked towards Lilac with raised brows.
"Some of the Hart family have been ban from this account. We will need to confirm this with a DNA match. Are you sure, Mr Eric?" He asked.
"Do it." Eric ordered and Lilac knees went weak. Some people were ban? Why? Why a DNA test? Neither herself or her sister were adopted. Wouldn't all descendants named Hart be of Grandfather's bloodline? Lilac looked sharply at Eric. Was it possible someone was not Grandpa's blood?
A lot of thoughts went through Lilac's head at this moment. Why would Eric marry her and not someone else despite hating her? Why the account was locked by Grandpa to bloodline only and she of all people inherited it. Why did her family not know this inheritance existed.
Lilac's attention retuned to what was happening in the bank.
She had heard that some odd banks marched DNA to give access. She was her grandfather's blood, but she surely did not have her grandfather's a hundred percent DNA.
A small machine was brought over and Lilac was asked to place her hand inside. A small needle pricked her and after a minute, they got the results.
"A bloodline match. This is just on the tolerance line. Mr Eric, this way," he said and led them to the deposit box. On the way, Lilac's brain buzzed. She thought back to how differently she and June were treated all their lives. If Grandpa only had one biological granddaughter, and she was a match? Who was June?
