Chapter 33 Widowhood suits me
Soon, she heard a car sound in the distance and walked out into the open road. Seeing the taxi sign, she waved at the car till it stopped before them. She helped Eric into the back seat as quickly as she could and jumped in after him.
“Go to the nearest hospital, hurry!” she shouted to the driver.
“Not any hospital,” Eric spoke softly, but she could still hear him.
“You are bleeding!” she insisted, then gave up, "Fine, widowhood would suit me!"
“Where then?” the taxi driver asked.
“Just drive! Did you not hear the gun shots as you entered?” she asked and he suddenly paniced and stepped on the gas.
“Gun shots? I was wearing my earpeice.” the driver muttered under his breath in regret and stepped on the gas and the car pulled away. If he had known there was a shooting, he would not have come.
“Castle hospital,” she heard Eric say and nodded. She wasn't sure what was so special about that place, but since it was atleast a hospital, she nodded.
“Castle hospital,” she intructed the driver. She tried hard to catch her breath while glancing at the man beside her. The city light slightly danced over the droplets of sweat on his face to make out a sharp jawline and lightly damp hair. His eyes fluttered open that every moment to meet hers and she froze. She felt as though she was being stared at by a prediator. For a second, she regreted picking him up. No! She really regreted it from the moment they met him all those years ago.
“Where those gunshots I heard because of people after you?” she collected herself and asked him quickly.
“You shouldn’t pick up random people in the city...” the driver started to say, when her head snapped his way.
“Yeah, why didn't anyone tell me this years ago? I would have been better off by now,” she scolded impatiently. They had also met in an accident. That was the beginning of her crush that led her to this situation. She really should have minded her business back then.
“He shouldn’t die in my car, that is too much paper work,” he answered in frustration. She looked back at the man whose eyes were slowly closing.
“Hey! Don’t close your eyes," she called to him, while shaking him to wake, then stoppeda and changed her mind "or better, just close it. I will give you a good funeral!”
“You can keep dreaming. I will not die any time soon,” he said through his teeth and closed his eyes.
Despite how she felt, this made her panic as his skin was cold to the touch. She placed her hand over his nose and only relaxed when she felt his breath on her palm.
It did not take long for them to arrive at a hospital. She hurried out and called for doctors to help carry him out before paying the taxi driver.
In the emergency room, they cut off his bloody clothes and Lilac felt numb just seeing all the blood she had not noticed before. Sure she had been able to smell blood on him, but she did not know he was this injured.
She looked away hurriedly till a doctor approached her, “He is unconscious,” he said, “He was shot, Do you know what happened? We need to inform the police.”
“The police?” Lilac asked, there was nothing she avoided more than law enforcement. If the police was called, she would have to deal with them. May times she has had run ins with law enforcement in her past life and always ended up on the loosing end.
She looked at the doctors and frowned. Wasn't he just injured? They only needed to treat him, why call unnecessary people in?
“No need for that, we went shooting and we have our license. The police will only be necessary if he dies. Or are you telling me he will die?” Lilac asked, making up an excuse.
“Shooting?” the doctor asked with a skeptical look.
“We have a...shooting ring at home,” she said uncomfortably. She already knew if the police came, as the one who brought him in, she will be brought back from questioning even if she left him here,
“A shooting ring?” the nurse beside him asked.
“Yes, there was an unfortunate accident. Just save his life, we will call the police if we need it...” she said coldly. She knew it was protocol to call the police for a gun shot wound, but she hoped for a miracle. After all, why did Eric insist on this hospital if they were so stuck on protocol? Lilac had thought he insisted because it would turn a blind eye to some things.
“We still need to...” the nurse started to say, when the doctor stopped her.
“Of course. We will make sure to save his life,” he said.
She could see that the doctor writing away look up slightly and back down. She felt that he had suddenly become respectful. Lilac sighed in relief. It seemed she guessed right. Only then did she notice that the injured Eric had been wheeled away.
“After surgery we will move him up to a ward. It does not seem to be a deep wound, but he lost a lot of blood, so the doctors will be done in an hour. You can handle the paperwork while you wait” he gestured in a direction, while handing her a slip and she thanked him and left in that direction.
When Lilac left, the nurse asked if to call the police but the doctor shot her a cold look.
“Is it your first time working here? You have not been briefed about calling law enforcement? You better keep your nose out of people’s business or you will not know when you die,” he warned and nodded with a slight shiver.
Lilac sat for a well over 20 minutes till it was her turn to do the paperwork. All through, she was impatient and honestly angry. Not only did she have to bring Eric to the hospital, she had to pay for his treatment. Lilac gritted her teeth. She did not want to spend a dime of the money she barely had on a billionaire like him. As she sat waiting, she swore to make him pay back every cent.
Soon, it was her turn. The nurse asked for several things including her Id. She answered blankly, till she was asked to fill in patient information.
“Family needs to sign here, how are you related to the patient?” At that question, Lilac froze. A part of her wanted to deny knowing him. She had never admitted outside that Eric was her husband because he always insisted she never did. Now she was even more reluctant to claim him. But if she said she did not know him, then the story she had told the doctor would come into question.
“Madam?” the nurse called her out of her daze.
“I am his wife,” she replied, begrudgingly.
“Okay then, Mrs. Black, Here is all you need, you will submit the rest here after he is treated," the nurse said. But as the words, "Mrs Black, " left the nurses lips, a man who was about to leave the hospital froze and stared at Lilac’s back
