Chapter 32 Coincidence or Fate?
Lilac stared at the chaos as blood pumped through her veins.
"Lilac, don't assume I will not call the police! This is assault!" June screamed.
"Hah! Go ahead, you can also explain why you took fraudulent loans in my name. That is identity theft and fraud!" Lilac answered and the room went silent.
Lilac felt much better getting this out of her system. If she had known fighting them would make her feel so good, she would have started a long time ago.
She took a deep breath and stepped back to take in their expressions.
"Let's be clear! You are no family of mine. I only came here to let you all know. If you ever do anything in my name again or even try to use me in any way, I will treat you all as enemies and retaliate fiercely. Do not say I have not warned you!" Lilac declared and marched out of the private room.
When she stepped out of the room, she found people watching, lilac ignored them and walked out of the restaurant. This was exactly what she wanted. High society was just this way, rumors of a fall out will soon fill every gossip.
Lilac stepped out into cold air and realized she had come with a taxi. Signing, she decided to walk a bit. After the adrenaline had left her system and the cold air had helped clear her head, Lilac finally felt the pain stabbing down her toes.
She stopped and took out her phone to order a taxi.
The mist hugged the city like a vengeful ghost, nothing Lilac was not used to. But this night was different; Something about the air was wrong. Something about the chill was too cold to the touch of her skin.
She hugged her coat tighter around herself and walked with more caution. Her instincts told her that something was wrong. Just then, she heard the sound of gun shuts. She could no more stay calm, as her steps quickened till she broke out in a full blown run.
Lilac was not stupid, even with her ears barely working, she could definitely recognize the pop of a gun.
Lilac searched her memory. She could not remember ever being in this situation. This must not have happened in her past life.
After running for a while, the gunshots increased. Lilac suddenly felt that running on the open road was too risky. She dashed into an alley and continued without stop, just when she thought she could not run anymore, she tripped over something and fell almost head first into the concrete. She struggled to get up, only to notice that something gripped tightly to her ankles.
Lilac suppressed the urge to scream despite her almost bursting heart and looked down to find a person. Even in the dark, she could still make out the form of a man’s broad shoulders covered in a grey coat. His form was very familiar.
The man let out a low groan below, as the smell of blood filled Lilac's nose. She guessed that he was injured. She lowered herself and a familiar Cologne filled her nose. Lilac immediately paused and swept away the hair on the man's face for a better look.
The next moment, her eyes widened into globes. It was her husband, Eric.
Lilac could still hear shooting getting closer. She did not care why he was there, or what happened to him, she only wanted to leave.
“Let go!” she said though her teeth, but his grip was like a steel clam and her weak hands could not pry them off her ankles.
"Why would I meet you of all people? Are you a ghost hunting me?" Lilac said, throwing a fierce glare at Eric below.
Suddenly, she noticed an unearthly silence hug the alley. The gun shot had seized and silence remained. It was unsettling. She could not even hear wind drift by. Her body froze and she lowered herself slowly to a squat.
“Shh... If I get caught, I will kill you myself,” she shushed Eric below. The next second, her phone rang in her purse, causing Lilac's soul to almost jump from her body. She pulled out her phone from her purse and silenced it quickly. It was an unknown number. She picked it in hopes that if something happened to her, the person on the other line would hear.
“I am here,” she heard a man’s unfamiliar voice rang out to her ears.
“Who is this?” she asked.
“Are you the one who called for a taxi? I am here where are you?” he asked impatiently.
“Oh, drive up front towards the white church. I walked a bit, I will step out to meet you,” she said and the man acknowledged her change in location and the line went dead. She looked down at the barely conscious Eric and almost pulled her hair out in anger and frustration; why won’t he let go?
"I don't even care why you are here, but you can stay here, I need to leave," Lilac said. No matter what, she was leaving him behind. It was better if he died and freed her.
"Lilac..." Eric basically said though his teeth. He grabbed her legs tightly unwilling to let her leave. In his pain he was confused. This had to be Lilac, right? She would really leave him to die?
"Don't call my name, it irritates me," Lilac said and saw the disbelief in his eyes revealed by the deam streetlights.
"What? I have been trying to be rid of you for a while now, but now that I think about it, being a widow is just as fine," Lilac said and tried to tear his hands away.
They struggled for a while before Lilac gave up, sighing dramatically.
"What did I do to deserve this?" She muttered to the sky as though cursing at God. Then she looked down at Eric.
“Fine, I need to leave before those people find us, we can’t stay here. You can come with me or stay here, but I am leaving,” she said. This was her only concession. She steeled her heart and told her self that the shooting ending means it was safe now.
Eric let go of her ankle, but grabbed unto her hand instead and she let helped him stand. If he had not pulled himself up, she would not have been able to help him.
“I have a taxi waiting. We need to get there soon,” Noticing his swaying form, she lent her body for him to lean on and they staggered out of the alley.
"Amazing Lilac, You can't even run from bullets without tripping on your husband," Lilac muttered in anger,
