Chapter 27 The Way He Goes (I)

Chapter 27 The Way He Goes (I)

Kristen's POV

I wake up to the buzzing of the timer beside me and find myself in a tangled mess of sheets.
For a moment I pause to wonder where I am, because this doesn't look like my room.
And suddenly images of last night flash through my head and then I can remember everything.
Goosebumps rise in my every single pore when I see Calhoun fast asleep beside me.
He looks peaceful in his sleep, with his lashes creating a shadow on his cheekbones. His mouth is not even apart with a drool discharging, nor is he snoring.
It's the first time I'm sleeping on top of a bed with him. And it's as if we're lovers.
The way he made sweet passionate love to me on top of that table makes heat crawl and settle in the pit of my stomach.
My phone is still ringing and with my heart in my throat, I get off the bed to see who it is.
Mom!
"Don't answer it!" Calhoun is getting off the bed already.
"Sixteen missed calls, she's probably afraid that something has happened to me."
"DO NOT pick up, Kristen!" He's struggling to put on a pair of shorts.
I am torn between listening to Alpha Calhoun or picking up the phone. Mom's gonna be so mad at me right now.
My phone stops ringing and now it's Calhoun's.
I can tell she's the one calling.
Good God, what is she thinking right now?
I've never had my heart race so hard in my chest before, not even when I joined the pack run.
Christ! Why did I ever let Calhoun bring me here?
We disappeared together so she'll definitely suspect a thing. Things are just getting even more dangerous with Calhoun and me. Calhoun lets his phone ring until it stops and then he switches it off and tosses it on the bed.
I gulp down the lump stuck within my throat when he comes to my side, snatches my phone from me, and does the same. "Why?"
"I told you we needed to talk without any intrusion."
"Talk? Right, we never even discussed because you were all over me last night." I accuse and blush furiously, upon having a flashback of how he buried his face in my cunt yesterday.
"Tell me you didn't enjoy it," he says as if he just read my mind, with amusement twinkling in his blue eyes.
Sighing, I turn away from him.
"This is wrong. Mom's gonna kill me," I'm muttering to myself but it seems my panic attack is rising.
"Calm down." He says from behind me.
Anger rises inside of me and makes me turn swiftly in his direction.
"You don't know her as much as I do, Calhoun!"
My yell has Calhoun's eyes dilating in their sockets because I've never had the guts to yell at him before.
"Kristen.." his voice is almost in a whisper.
"She's my mom, I know her better. She already accused me of trying to seduce you," my voice is low when I remember how she screamed at Mr and smashed the glass cup.
Calhoun is stunned.
"She's not so nice when she feels insecure over a thing," I bite my tongue to keep from going into further details because I can't tell him she hurts me at times. I've grown accustomed to it, learned to live with it.
"This is just so wrong, you never should've brought me here. How do you expect her to feel when she finds out her daughter and husband are missing at once? They didn't return home last night and then switched their phones at once this morning, after missing her calls."
"Just calm down and don't overthink things, Kristen," Calhoun puts his hands on my shoulders, "let me handle things."
"How would you ever do that? Have you ever seen her like really upset? She can tumble a whole house upside down," it's not as if I'm snitching on her or something.
"I'll have to tell her the truth," he says.
"What truth?" My ears rise in alert.
"That the marriage cannot work out between us," he pins on this.
Something strikes through me, just like a bolt of lightning and I stiffen in my spot.
"You're serious about this?"
"I meant everything I said, Kristen," he doesn't look away from me.
"It's because of me! Me, Alpha Calhoun. You need to quit these games you play and reject me."
"It's never been a game with you, Kristen," his eyes soften into something that resembles affection.
But I'm not letting this get through me. It's just stupid.
"Your marriage with my mom is about to go in ruins because of me," my voice is firm when I state the obvious.
"It's not because of you," Calhoun folds his arms across his chest and shakes his head.
"A man doesn't get stolen by another woman, he leaves when he wants the other one. People fail to understand this because of the misconception that women snatch men from women."
Okay, I'll have to admit that he's saying the truth here. But the reality of him wanting to divorce my mom because of me doesn't settle well with me.
"You don't even love me, it's just sex between us," I puff out without even thinking.
"How would you ever know?" His gaze holds mine.
And my chest burns.
