Chapter 14 Not Showing Up For The Rejection
Kristen's POV
I'm currently at the Greyhound council hall, with three elders, Bruce and three of Alpha Calhoun's men. But he's nowhere in sight.
"Just wait a little longer, he will show up," Bruce whispers to me and I nod in response.
Calhoun's elders are still surprised to know that their Alpha has a mate and it's me, his Luna's daughter.
Shame clouds me when my mind drifts back to what happened thirty minutes ago. Mom didn't raise a hand on me but she purposely smashed a glass cup against the floor and accused me of trying to seduce Calhoun.
Her behavior is only a product of what happened at the pack run, if only she knows that we've not only gotten intimate but I am also his mate, she'll kill me.
My impatience is getting the best of me, I want Alpha Calhoun to come here and reject me as quickly as he can. My mom's behavior is understandable but it instilled fear in me. I don't want her to get hurt because of me, upon knowing she won't hurt alone. She'd ensure I go through pains one way or the other.
To think we wanted to start off from the right foot but this whole issue of Alpha Calhoun is standing as an obstacle on our part. Tears threaten to spill from my eyes but I just hold them back. When Calhoun finally rejects me, it'll all be over. And then I'll keep this secret buried deep within me.
"Let me go check up on him," Bruce looks away from the elders to me, "I promise it won't take long."
I fumble with my hands as Bruce leaves to get his Alpha. I hope he returns quickly with Calhoun so all connections between Calhoun and me can be cut short.
"Do you think it's best to have our Alpha reject you?" One of the elders inquires, pulling my attention to him.
"My mother is his wife and Luna, nothing can go wrong with their relationship," upon replying, I take the seat on my left because I'm tired of standing and waiting.
"What about you and him? The age gap between you and our Alpha doesn't matter, you could be our rightful Luna, you know?" Another elder says.
"I don't want it," I shake my head and placed my hands on my thighs. If only they know how crazy my mom can be.
"This isn't a mere member of our pack, it's Alpha Calhoun. You two were made mates for a reason."
"I want peace," my tone is firm, leaving no room for further argument.
Why is Alpha Calhoun taking so long to show up? He talked about the rejection, he should be here by now.
On the other hand, I hope mom didn't trail after me and Bruce, cause if she finds out things will be in ruins.
I wait for the next fifteen minutes, hoping Alpha Calhoun shows up but he doesn't. My eyes are fixed on the door as I count to fifty and they don't move. Hundred, nothing. Five hundred; still the freaking same.
Relief swipes through me when the doors jerk open and I see Bruce...but he's alone with no Alpha Calhoun in sight. And there's disappointment on his face.
"Where is he?"
"I'm afraid I can't find him."
"What?" I'm already at my feet.
"It's true, Alpha Calhoun is like this at times. He disappears without a trace and returns when he likes," Bruce pants and puffs, before pushing his hands into his pants pocket.
My heart drops in my stomach because Alpha Calhoun is literally giving me a death sentence right now. How can he do this? He asked me to meet him here at the Council hall so he would reject me.
"It can't be," I want to be in denial right now but it's impossible when Calhoun is truly not here.
"The rejection can not proceed when your mate isn't here, Kristen." The first elder looks at me.
"But he said it was tonight," an incredulous scoff erupts from my mouth because I can't believe this is happening.
"The only alternative you have left is to wait until he returns." The first elder makes this known to me.
While I'm just standing here, scared and confused as to why this is happening to me.
"Let's go, Kristen," Bruce puts his hand on my shoulder, "it could be something came up. Let's just wait until he returns."
My heart is heavy in my chest as we leave the council hall and head back to Alpha Calhoun's estate.
Why did he tell me to come when he knew he wouldn't?
What's with the sudden change in his plans?
He doesn't want to reject me anymore nor break our mate bond?
A thousand questions are flowing through my head as Bruce and I hop into his car.
"Just relax, Kristen. It's not the end of the world," Bruce, who has noticed my distress, reassures me, "Alpha Calhoun will return and he'll reject you."
Nodding, I buckle my seatbelt before he starts the car.
Mom's suspicion that I am trying to seduce her husband is wrong.
Okay, I did approach him at the club and asked him to sleep with me. But it was only because I didn't know his identity or the fact that they were getting married the following morning. I went to him because I thought we'd never see each other after the fling.
Alpha Calhoun is the one who's all over me.
Last night he left her, ran after me, and had sex with me in the rain.
This evening he carried me in his arms upon sensing my weakness.
And now, he didn't show up to reject me at the council hall.
As much as I am upset over this, a part of me is relieved that he didn't reject me.
Things are just so messed up and now I have to face my mom and try to make her believe nothing is going on between her husband and me.
