Chapter 130 WILD ACCUSATIONS

Chapter 130 WILD ACCUSATIONS

"They're not part of this. As long as they stay out of my way."

"And if they don't?"

Cross's smile faded. "Then they become collateral damage."

The room was silent.

Alexander's jaw tightened. "I need time."

"You have twenty-four hours." Cross stood. "After that, my offer expires. And you'll wish you'd taken it."

The senator walked out, leaving Alexander alone with his thoughts.

The Diner — One Hour Later

Claire sat in shock as Elena finished her story.

"Senator Cross," Claire whispered. "He's involved?"

"Deeply," Elena said. "He's been protecting Rafael for years. Quashing investigations. Blocking subpoenas. Even helping Rafael expand into new territories."

Claire shook her head. "This is insane. How is he still in office?"

"Because no one has been able to prove it. Until now." Elena tapped her tablet. "I have a source inside Rafael's organization. Someone who's been feeding me information for months.

But I need more. I need someone who can verify the financial records. Someone who knows the players."

Claire frowned. "You want me to introduce you to Sophia."

"I want you to help me expose the truth." Elena's eyes were intense. "Your husband sold you out. Rafael tried to destroy your best friend.

Senator Cross is protecting the man who ruined both your lives. Don't you want justice?"

Claire thought about David's lies. About Sophia hiding in a compound. About everything she'd lost.

"Sophia won't trust you," Claire said. "She doesn't trust anyone."

"Then don't tell her about me. Just get me the files. The USB drive Helena gave her. The evidence about Rafael's takeover."

Claire hesitated. "That's not mine to give."

"It's not Sophia's either. It belongs to the public. To the people Rafael has hurt." Elena reached across the table, her hand almost touching Claire's. "I'm not asking you to betray your friend. I'm asking you to help me save her. Because if Rafael wins, Sophia loses everything. Including her daughter."

Claire's eyes filled with tears. "I need to think."

"You have twenty-four hours." Elena slid a business card across the table. "Call me when you've decided."

She stood and walked out, leaving Claire alone with the cold coffee and the weight of an impossible choice.

The Compound — Evening

Sophia stood in the panic room, staring at the surveillance monitors.

Kat had set up a live feed of the perimeter—cameras hidden in trees, motion sensors buried in the ground, drones circling overhead.

Marcus entered, closing the heavy door behind him. "Claire is back. She's asking for you."

Sophia didn't turn around. "Did she tell you about the journalist?"

"Elena Vasquez. I ran a background check." Marcus handed her a printed file. "She's legit. Award-winning investigative reporter. But she's also reckless. Three of her sources are dead."

Sophia took the file, scanning the pages. "Claire wants me to give her the USB."

"She didn't say that. But I could see it in her eyes."

Sophia set the file down. "I trusted Claire with my life. But this… this is different. The USB is the only leverage I have. If I give it to Elena, I lose control of the narrative."

"Or you gain an ally." Marcus sat across from her. "Elena has resources we don't. Connections. A platform. If she publishes the truth about Rafael, it's over for him."

"Unless he kills her first."

Marcus was quiet.

Sophia turned back to the monitors. "I need to talk to Alexander."

"He's in solitary. No calls allowed."

"Then find a way."

Marcus nodded and left.

Sophia stared at the screens the dark woods, the empty roads, the silent sky. Somewhere out there, Rafael was watching.

She wasn't going to give him the chance to strike first.

Unknown Location — Same Night

Rafael Castillo sat in his private study, a glass of whiskey in his hand. Across from him sat David Chen, pale and sweating.

"She's gone," David said. "Claire. She took the files. She's with Sophia."

Rafael took a slow sip of whiskey. "I know."

"Then why aren't you doing something?"

"Because patience is a weapon, David. One you've never learned to wield." Rafael set the glass down. "Sophia is hiding. She's scared. She's making mistakes. And every mistake brings her closer to me."

David wiped his forehead. "What about the journalist? Elena Vasquez?"

Rafael smiled. "Already handled."

He pressed a button on his desk. The wall-mounted screen flickered to life, showing a live feed.

Elena Vasquez sat in a dark room, hands bound to a chair. Her face was bruised. Her lip was split. But her eyes her eyes were still defiant.

David stared at the screen. "You kidnapped her?"

"I invited her to a conversation." Rafael stood, walking to the screen. "She's been digging into my affairs for months. Asking questions. Making threats. I decided it was time to… answer her."

Elena's voice came through the speakers, muffled but clear. "You won't get away with this."

Rafael laughed. "My dear, I've gotten away with everything for thirty years. What makes you think you'll be different?"

"Because I'm not alone."

Rafael's smile faded. He turned to David. "Find out who she's working with. And make sure they never see the light of day."

David nodded, already reaching for his phone.

Rafael looked back at the screen, at Elena's defiant eyes.

"Everyone breaks," he said softly. "The only question is how long it takes."

The Compound — 3:00 AM

Sophia's phone rang like a gunshot in the dark.

She grabbed it before Victoria could wake. Unknown number.

“Sophia Hart.” A man's voice. Calm. Amused. “I have something of yours.”

Her blood turned to ice. “Who is this?”

“Someone who's been watching you for a very long time.” A pause. “But that's not important. What's important is the woman I have sitting in my basement. Elena Vasquez. You know her?”

Sophia's grip tightened on the phone. “I've never met her.”

“No. But your friend Claire has. And now Elena knows things she shouldn't. Things that could hurt a lot of powerful people.”

“What do you want?”

“The USB drive. Helena's evidence. All of it. You have twenty-four hours to deliver it to me, or Elena dies. And then I come for Claire. And then I come for your daughter.”
