Chapter 129 CHAPTER 129

Chapter 129 CHAPTER 129

Alexander sat down slowly. "I already have a deal with the FBI."

"Forget the FBI." Cross leaned forward. "I'm offering you something better. Freedom. Protection. And the head of Rafael Castillo on a silver platter."

"In exchange for what?"

Cross smiled. "In exchange for control of TI Global. When Tanaka falls and he will fall—I want to be the one holding the pieces."

Alexander stared at him. "You want me to help you steal a company."

"I want you to help me dismantle a criminal empire. Rafael's. Tanaka's. Even Helena's." Cross's eyes glittered. "In return, you get your life back. Your family. Your freedom."

"And if I refuse?"

Cross stood. "Then you rot in here while everyone you love burns."

He walked to the door, then paused. "Think about it, Mr. Blackwood. You have forty-eight hours."

The door closed.

Alexander sat alone in the interview room, the weight of the world pressing down on his shoulders.

The Diner — 7th Street, New York — Noon

Claire Moretti sat in the back booth of the diner, her coffee growing cold in front of her. She hadn't slept.

Every shadow looked like David. Every ringing phone made her flinch.

The bell above the door chimed.

Elena Vasquez walked in.

She was younger than Claire expected maybe late twenties with dark hair pulled into a tight bun and eyes that missed nothing.

She carried a leather satchel worn at the edges, the kind that had seen a thousand stories.

Elena slid into the booth across from Claire. "Thank you for meeting me."

Claire didn't smile. "You said you had information."

"I have more than information." Elena pulled out a tablet and set it on the table. "I have proof. Bank records, emails, recordings enough to put David away for decades."

Claire's throat tightened. "Then why haven't you published it?"

"Because the story is bigger than David Chen. It's about Rafael Castillo. About Helena Blackwood. About Senator Cross."

Elena's eyes locked onto Claire's. "And about Sophia Hart."

Claire stiffened. "Sophia has nothing to do with this."

"Doesn't she?" Elena tapped the tablet, bringing up a file. "I've been following Rafael for three years. I know about the hostile takeover.

I know about the fake testimony from Vanessa Laurent.

I know about the USB drive Helena gave Sophia."

Claire's heart pounded. "How?"

"Because someone inside Rafael's organization has been feeding me information for months."

Elena leaned closer. "Someone who wants him to fall. Someone who's willing to burn everything down to make it happen."

"Who?"

Elena shook her head. "Not yet. First, I need to know: are you in or out?"

Claire stared at the tablet. At the evidence. At the chance to finally fight back.

"What do you need me to do?"

The Compound — Same Afternoon

Sophia paced the living room, Victoria asleep in the portable crib.

Dimitri Volkov sat on the couch, his hands cuffed to the armrest Kat's doing, after Sophia had told her about his warning.

Kat stood by the window, arms crossed, her gray eyes fixed on her husband like a hawk watching a snake.

"You should have killed him years ago," Kat said flatly.

"I should have," Sophia agreed. "But he has information we need."

"Information he'll trade for his life." Kat turned to face Dimitri. "What do you have?"

Dimitri's smirk was weak, but it was there. "Everything. Rafael's contacts. His safe houses. His money trails. His connection to Senator Cross."

Kat raised an eyebrow. "Cross?"

"William Cross. Senior Senator from New York. He's been on Rafael's payroll for five years. Votes the way Rafael wants. Kills legislation that threatens his operations."

Sophia stopped pacing. "A United States Senator is working for Rafael?"

"He's not working for him. They're partners." Dimitri leaned forward as far as the cuffs would allow. "Cross isn't just taking money. He's helping Rafael expand. New markets. New territories. New victims."

Kat crossed to the couch, standing over her husband. "And you have proof?"

Dimitri nodded toward his jacket, still on the floor where Kat had thrown it. "Inside pocket. A USB drive. Every transaction between Rafael and Cross for the last three years."

Sophia retrieved the jacket, found the drive, and handed it to Kat. "If this is real, it changes everything."

"It's real," Dimitri said. "But it's not enough. Cross is careful. The money goes through twelve shell companies before it reaches him. You'll need a forensic accountant to trace it."

Kat inserted the drive into her laptop. Files populated the screen hundreds of them, maybe thousands.

"Where did you get this?" Kat asked, her voice quieter now.

Dimitri's smirk faded. "I stole it from Rafael's personal server. Six months ago. He doesn't know it's missing. If he did, I'd already be dead."

Sophia looked at Kat. "Can you verify any of this?"

Kat scrolled through the files, her expression unreadable. "Some of it. The shell companies match patterns I've seen before. But the senator's name doesn't appear anywhere."

"It won't," Dimitri said. "Cross is too smart for that. The connection is in the metadata. The dates. The amounts. The timing of specific votes."

Sophia's phone buzzed. A text from Marcus.

"Claire is meeting with a journalist named Elena Vasquez. She says Elena has evidence about Rafael. I'm monitoring. Will update."

Sophia typed back: "Keep her safe. Don't let her do anything stupid."

She looked up at Kat. "We have a journalist sniffing around. Elena Vasquez."

Kat's expression darkened. "I know her. She's dangerous."

"Dangerous how?"

"She doesn't play by the rules. She burned three sources last year to get a story. One of them committed suicide after she published."

Sophia's stomach dropped. "Claire doesn't know that."

"Then you'd better tell her. Before Elena decides Claire is expendable."

Federal Detention Center — Afternoon

Alexander sat across from Senator Cross in the private interview room. The senator looked relaxed, confident—like a man who had already won.

"Forty-eight hours," Cross said. "Have you decided?"

Alexander kept his voice neutral. "You're asking me to betray the FBI. To betray my family. To help you steal a company."

"I'm asking you to save yourself." Cross leaned forward. "The FBI deal requires you to wear a wire. To meet with Rafael. To put yourself in danger. My deal requires you to sign some papers and make a few phone calls."

Alexander studied the senator's face. "And if I say no?"

Cross smiled. "Then I make sure you never see the light of day again. I have friends on the parole board. Friends on the bench. Friends who owe me favors." He spread his hands. "Your lawyer is good, Mr. Blackwood. But he's not better than me."

Alexander felt the walls closing in. "What about Sophia? Victoria?"
