Chapter 19
Chapter 19
DARIO
Sophia doesn’t trust me, and she has her reasons. I can’t tell her the truth about who I really am.
But it still makes me furious, because I want her to trust me, to let me protect her. Instead, she ran, and now she won’t accept my help because she’s afraid of me. So all I can do is keep protecting her, even if she doesn’t want me to.
I ordered my men to monitor her every step after she left my room earlier.
When she finally left her own room, ready to get off the ship, I decided to try speaking to her one last time. It would be so much easier if she allowed me to get her out safely.
I intercepted her in one of the ship’s corridors, making her stop as soon as she saw me.
“I just want to leave,” she says, as if I have any intention of hurting her.
“Are you really afraid of me? After everything? Do you know how much it hurts to hear that?”
“I don’t know who you are, but I know I don’t want anything to do with you. Just let me go.”
“How can you say that after what happened last night?”
“That… was just sex. And I regret it.”
How can she say that? Rage boils inside me. Who does she think I am? Does she really think she can treat me like some fling?
“Don’t ever say that again.”
“Let me go.”
“You’re in danger right now. Let me get you out safely.”
“I don’t want your help.”
Fine. Begging isn’t my style. It would have to be the hard way. I didn’t want to scare her more, so I just nodded and left her behind in the corridor.
One small mistake could cost Sophia her life. But my men know I don’t tolerate mistakes. They know their lives depend on acting at the right time. They know what’s at stake isn’t just the lives of our enemies but their own if they fail.
So when Mattia’s men showed up at a warehouse on the docks to intercept Sophia as soon as she left the ship, we were already waiting for them.
On my orders, Velan and my men captured every one of them, allowing Sophia to leave safely.
For a while, I stayed back in the shadows, just watching, but impatience took over when I saw Velan getting nowhere with her interrogation. I realized I’d have to dirty my own hands.
Thankfully, I always wear gloves to avoid getting these vermin’s blood on me. Approaching, I took Velan’s gun and stepped into the center of the circle they formed in the middle of the warehouse, all of them kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs.
“I’m only going to ask once. Why does he want her?” I say, then close my eyes and wait.
The sound of silence irritates me more with every passing second. Fuck. They never learn. Opening my eyes, I fire three shots, dropping three of them to the ground. The silencer makes the sound almost nonexistent. The two left alive start begging.
“All right. Here’s the deal. Whoever tells me what I want to know lives. The other one…”
“Please… I’ll talk!” one of them blurts, nearly crying.
I finish the other one off a second later.
“Start talking.”
“I…”
“Why does he want the woman?”
“When I tell you, you’re going to kill me, aren’t you?”
“If you don’t answer now, it’ll happen before you can blink.”
“Shit! I… I think she has evidence of a bribe related to the purchase of a mine. That’s all I know. I swear. Please…”
“I believe you.” I step back, handing the gun back to Velan. “You know what to do,” I tell her, and she nods.
“No! No! I told you what you wanted to know…” the worm screams before Velan silences him forever.
So Mattia isn’t after Sophia because she saved me, but because she has information that could hurt him.
Looks like I’ll have to run my own investigation on this. And unfortunately, I’ll have to stay away from Sophia for now, but I’ll keep her under watch for her own safety.
Apparently, there are a lot of things I don’t know about her. For example, why the hell she’s involved in business tied to the Lucchese family.

SOPHIA
This past month, I haven’t gone a single day without feeling on edge. I’m almost becoming paranoid. Not just for myself, but for Lily too.
Since what happened on the ship, I’ve been living in constant fear that Xavier will try something. Maybe that’s why, being so worried about her safety, I forgot that her health could be an even bigger risk.
Her condition has gotten much worse over the last week, and even though I’ve called her every single day, she didn’t think to tell me. I wouldn’t even know if I hadn’t come to visit. That made me furious.
“You should have told me! You can’t do this, Lily!”
“You’re not my babysitter. I can take care of myself.”
“I’m your sister! I need to know when you’re not okay! Damn it! Can’t you understand that?” I shout.
Seeing her lying in bed like that torments me even more.
“I’m sorry… I… I…”
Suddenly, all the feelings crash over me at once, bringing tears to my eyes. Rage, helplessness, fear.
“Forgive me. It’s just… there’s so much going on… I can’t lose you. Do you understand? You’re all I have. You’re everything to me.”
“Come here.” She pats the space beside her on the bed, and I sit. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to worry you.” She hugs me. “You don’t have to do everything alone. Tell me what’s going on.”
“You don’t need to worry.”
“Please. You’ve called me every day this past month. Do you really think I’m that naive? And the extra security—do you really think I didn’t notice?”
“All right. Maybe you should know.”
I tell her everything, starting with my suspicions about our parents’ deaths and ending with the latest events with Xavier.
“And why haven’t you gone to the police yet?”
“I don’t have enough evidence against him. But don’t worry, I’m working on it.”
“Bastard!”
“Yes, but he’s going to pay for everything. Now I have to go. It’s getting late, and I have to attend a party hosted by some business partners. If I’m lucky, I might learn something.”
“I’m going with you.”
“No. You need to follow the doctor’s orders and rest.”
“I’m tired of resting.”
“You know you need to. Call me if you need anything, okay? I love you.”
“I love you too.”
I say goodbye to her before heading back to my apartment. In the end, the jewels I recovered from the auction led me nowhere. Xavier left no trace tying him to them.
And I probably never would have known about his involvement if I hadn’t seen him there myself. Since then, the investigation has been crawling, and the detective I hired hasn’t found any new evidence to incriminate Xavier.
That’s why I decided to start looking for any loose ends on my own. That’s what I plan to do tonight: keep my eyes and ears open.
Men tend to talk more when they’re drinking—or when they’re interested in a woman. Maybe a little charm will help me find something.
