Chapter Eighty-five

Chapter Eighty-five
Bryan
I know Kacy will hate me if I agree with Francis's plan, but there's nothing else I can do. It's my duty to do this. I sighed, pressing the bridge of my nose.
"Aren't you supposed to go after her?" Francis asked. "Emotional women often get in danger. You two should talk about it. It's still your decision whether you want to do this or not. If you can't, we can look for someone else."
"But that'll be more work to do," I said. "Don't worry, I'll try my best to convince her."
"You should understand her feelings too. She must be worried about you, especially that you're getting married soon and build a family. She's just afraid that her child will grow up without a father," Francis said.
"I didn't expect you to be this considerate, but thanks, bud." I gave him a tap on the shoulder before going out to follow Kacy.
I saw Kacy getting inside the elevator. I ran as fast as I could through the dimly-lit corridor, but the elevator's door closed before I could reach her. I took the stairs instead. I've never been this worried before. I felt guilty for disappointing Kacy. I'm the reason why she got emotional and impulsive.
Sweat poured down my forehead as I ran down the stairs. My heart's beating so fast in my chest. Francis's employees were looking at me, probably confused why I was running, but I ignored them.
I arrived at the lobby just as Kacy stepped out of the elevator. She tried to pass through me, but I grabbed her hand. I didn't want to be harsh or firm with her. I'm just worried something might happen to her if she goes outside like this.
"Kacy, please..." I begged. "You have to understand."
"Just let me go, Bryan. I don't want to cause a commotion here. I want to be alone for a while," she said in a cold voice.
"Please. I'm worried about you. Let's talk about this inside." I didn't let her go.
She wiped my hand off her arm. "Okay, fine." She stepped back inside the elevator.
I stood beside her as she pressed the button and the elevator started moving up. There's a heavy silence between us. I know Kacy won't agree with what I'm going to do, but still, I need to do it, whether she agrees or not.
"Kacy, I—" I'm about to apologize, but she cut me off.
"Are you really sure you want to do it?" She asked. "I'm worried about you, Bryan. You're the only one I have now; I can't afford it if something happens to you. I don't want our child to grow up without a father."
I moved close and wrapped my arms around her. "I know. But I have to do it. There's no one else who should do it." I kissed her forehead, trying to comfort her.
She looked into my eyes. "Please, Bryan, promise me you'll come back no matter what happens. I'll kill myself if you don't."
"What are you talking a—"
"Just promise me, if you ever die, I'll just die too," she asserted.
"Alright, alright. I promise. I'll be back. For you and for our child. You'll have to take care of yourself while I'm away. It's not good for our baby if you eat unhealthy foods and stay up late."
Kacy hugged me tightly, her way of showing how difficult it is to let go. But she should understand that life doesn't always go as planned. Even the ones we love the most have to leave us one day. It doesn't mean they don't love us anymore, but that's just the way life is.
"Don't worry too much, my dear. Everything will be alright. Just take care of yourself and our baby while I'm away. Francis is there; you can tell him if you need something." I'm about to kiss her, but the door opened, and two males entered.
Kacy stayed close to me. These men seem suspicious. They are wearing suits and black shades. Their hands inside the pocket of their pants, their faces expressionless. The silence felt so awkward.
"Don't move," one of them said, already pointing a gun at my head. "One wrong move and your head will explode."
"What do you want from us?" I didn't want to cause trouble, for it'd put not only my life in danger but also Kacy's. If she were not here beside me, I would have already kicked this man's ass. I'm not afraid of being shot; what I'm afraid of is Kacy being shot.
"The master noticed that it's been several days already and his spy didn't come back yet, so we came to finish his job," he said in a serious tone.
It seems like he's talking about Akira and his boss. Before I could hear the clicking of the trigger, I grabbed the gun from him, and we grappled against each other.
"No! Don't hurt him!" Kacy shouted. She's being held tight by the other man. A gunshot whizzed, shooting the elevator's roof. Bullet bounced back to the floor.
The man was so strong that I found it difficult to subdue him. He pulled the gun, pointing it right at Kacy. But before he could press the trigger, I used all my strength and shot the other man instead. I grabbed the opportunity to kick him and punch his face. Blood streaming down his nose, staining my hands. I was about to kill him, but Kacy stopped me.
"Bryan, don't," she hugged me from the back.
I didn't want Kacy to see me kill someone. It's been a while since the last time I did such a thing. It must have given her trauma when I killed her parents. I want to assure her that I've changed, so I let the man escape. He ran outside like a coward, leaving his dead friend behind as the elevator door opened. Kacy and I stepped out and continued to Francis' office.
Francis opened the door. "God! What happened with you two?" He asked in a worried tone.
"Two men were sent to kill us," I replied. "Don't worry, I've taken care of them. One died in the elevator, and the other escaped. Sure, he'll go back to his boss and report what happened, and we can expect him to send more assassins to kill us."
"Dammit!" Francis cursed, stepping inside.
Kacy and I stepped inside his office. I'm not worried about myself despite getting these black eyes and bruises on my face. I've been used to this. What I'm worried about is Kacy. She seems so scared, especially after that gunshot.
"It seems like I need to hire more guards. Those people don't think twice about killing," Francis said, sitting down in his swivel chair.
"Where's Akira by the way?" I asked, helping Kacy sit down on the sofa.
"He's in his room," Francis replied.
"Let me check on him." I stood up, kissed Kacy's forehead, and told her to stay there for a while. Then I went to Akira's room. When I got inside, I didn't find him there and saw a rope hanging down the window. "Dammit!"
