Epilogue
Vincenzo didn't make it out of the operating room, he died on the table. And surprisingly, I felt his death more than I expected myself to feel it. Vincenzo had willed ten percent of his wealth to me and sixty-five to Antonio, to be held in trust by me until he was of age. The rest was to be shared among the rest of his family. They are currently contesting the will in court, but they can all burn in hell for all I care.
I made peace with my parents and even invited them to my wedding. Let's just say they've moved to Italy so they could be closer to me and Antonio and 'make up for every lost moment'
Our wedding was a quiet one, had only my parents, Ana as the bridesmaid, Antonio as best man, and our household staff.
As I rubbed my swollen tummy, I realized that a while lot has happened in my life, but I wouldn't have made the progress that I have made or met Alessandro or even had Antonio or have this little bundle of joy growing in my tummy. A lot has happened, but it was all worth it.
I heard the garden doors slide open and shut and soft footfalls on the grass.
"There you are, I've been searching for you all around the house."
He leaned down and gave me a light peck on the lips before settling down beside me.
"What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing really, just here and there."
I shrugged and rubbed my swollen belly.
"Is it Vincenzo?"
"No, not really. I've been thinking about everything, from when I was a lapdog for my father up until now."
"It's been quite a journey."
I nodded and leaned into him.
"But it was worth it."
"Are you happy? I mean with me, been here and your parents and all..."
"Yes, more than I've ever been. More than I'll ever be."
