Chapter 790: The Truth Comes to Light
Chapter 790: The Truth Comes to Light
Just then, Police Chief Carter walked in after receiving the message. Seeing William, he reached out enthusiastically to shake his hand: "Mr. Fisher, what brings you here?"
The officer beside them looked completely confused.
"Chief Carter, your people brought me in, saying there were drugs hidden in my car." William glanced coldly at the officer.
"Ms. Scott, I'm sorry you had to go through this. Please, come with me."
Chief Carter invited them into his office, with the young officer following behind without leaving.
Margaret briefly explained what had happened.
After hearing her out, Chief Carter immediately slammed the table: "Frank, what were you thinking? Mr. Fisher is our most honored guest. Without the Fisher family's years of donations and contributions to this city, our police department wouldn't be where it is today."
Officer Frank quickly apologized: "Mr. Fisher, I'm sorry. But the drugs found on your friend..."
"Just wait for the test results to come back and see if there are actually any drugs in his system. Won't that make everything clear?" Margaret said calmly.
She also wanted to know who was behind all this.
Back at home, Electra's mind started racing. The more she thought about it, the more frustrated she felt—they had been so close to getting Kevin out, so why was this so hard?
Just then, someone posted a recorded phone conversation online. Margaret clicked on the news and found the audio transcript below—it was a conversation between Electra and that reporter from before, but the recording had clearly been edited.
"Looks like some people can't hold back anymore." Margaret frowned. "I'm a bit worried about Electra."
She was afraid Electra might get stuck in her own head and do something reckless.
"This will all be over soon. Don't worry too much." William took a more positive view of everything, not as pessimistic as her.
The online recording kept spreading, with all the criticism pointing at Electra. People online thought she couldn't tell right from wrong and was still covering for someone who used drugs. The comments were filled with nothing but insults.
"How did Electra turn out like this? If it weren't for that reporter, we wouldn't know what kind of person Kevin really is."
"Exactly. Dating her made me lose all my good feelings. Turning from fan to hater."
"Unfollowing, unfollowing."
Watching the comments pile up, Margaret immediately contacted the company's PR department, asking them to find a way to take down the trending topic, while sending several people to watch Electra's house.
She and William stayed at the police station to continue waiting. Several people connected to Kevin were also brought in one after another.
They spent the entire night at the station. It wasn't until early the next morning that Kevin was released and they received the complete test report.
Chief Carter delivered it personally.
"Sorry about that, Mr. Fisher. We made a mistake. Mr. Harris has no traces of drug use in his system. As for that package of drugs... there must have been some mix-up." Chief Carter's explanation satisfied William enough.
"Thank you, Chief Carter. Kevin is a public figure, so we'll need to use this test report publicly. You don't mind, do you?" Margaret added from the side. With this official report, everything else would be much easier to handle.
Kevin got in the car with them. Margaret's face finally showed a smile.
"We'll go straight to the company and put out a statement. With this report, let's see who dares to spread rumors now." Margaret's confidence was rekindled.
Kevin looked out at the speeding streetscape, but his expression wasn't relaxed.
When they arrived at Margaret's company, everyone was already busy. Margaret called the PR team into the conference room while Kevin and William waited in the office.
As soon as she entered, Margaret placed the test report on the table: "This is Kevin's medical test report, stamped with the police department's official seal. Draft an announcement to clear up this whole thing."
"What about that reporter who leaked the information? Should we keep investigating?" a PR colleague asked.
"No need." Margaret waved her hand.
The company worked efficiently, and soon the statement came back—logical, detailed, and paired with the official test report. Everything was ready.
Margaret published the statement directly through the company's official account.
Now it was time to wait. She also contacted several social media accounts and online influencers to help build momentum and guide public opinion.
After nearly ten days of brewing, this incident finally reached a turning point.
Public opinion completely reversed.
After the statement was released, combined with Margaret's series of actions, the whole situation turned around sharply. Though some people still criticized Kevin and blamed Margaret in the comments, they were quickly drowned out by a flood of positive voices.
The tide had turned.
Margaret finally let out a long breath and exchanged a smile with William. This was the first real good news in days.
"Now that this is settled, you can finally relax." Margaret patted Kevin on the shoulder.
Just as she finished speaking, another trending topic jumped to the top of the homepage.
Opening it, they saw it was from Electra—"Unconditionally support Kevin," along with parts of the original phone recording. Though the content was brief, with the situation already improving, this was the icing on the cake.
It seemed Electra still had Kevin on her mind.
"See, someone still cares about you." Margaret held the screen in front of Kevin.
Kevin glanced at it and let out a heavy sigh.
Afterward, they all went to Electra's place. William and Kevin waited downstairs while Margaret went up alone.
The people the company had sent to stay with Electra were still there. After Margaret arrived, she told them they could leave.
Electra sat alone in front of her computer. She looked up at Margaret and forced a bitter smile: "You're here... He's okay now, right?"
These past few days, she'd been forcing herself not to pay attention to any news about Kevin. The two of them had made things clear online, but she found she still couldn't do it.
"Don't tell Kevin... that I'm still worried about him." The first thing Electra said was a plea.
Margaret sighed deeply: "Why do you do this to yourself? If you care, why pretend you don't?"
Those statements had already said everything.
"I'm scared... scared everything will collapse and we'll have to start over." Electra tried hard to control her emotions, not wanting to pass negative energy to anyone.
Margaret walked to her side, gently patting her back, her voice soft and tender: "Don't be afraid. It's okay to say it out loud."
"The first time Kevin chose to give me up, I was already heartbroken. Even though I chose to let go then, that was never my first choice, never what I wanted. Our relationship back then was just like what the announcement said." Margaret had never heard her mention these things before.
"I'm scared... scared that this already fragile relationship will be shattered again with one blow, and all our efforts will be wasted. What would be the point of all this struggling?" Electra finally shouted it out. This was the first time she'd directly vented her emotions.
She was clear-headed, grateful to be with Kevin, grateful for this chance. But she really didn't want to see the tragedy replay itself.
As Electra spoke, her eyes reddened, tears welling up but she desperately held them back. Watching her, Margaret's heart ached.
"Have you ever thought... he might want to start over with you?" Margaret asked tentatively.
Electra's lips curved, and she shook her head: "Never thought about it. Don't dare to hope for it."
