Chapter 46: Saved by an enemy
Chapter 46: Saved by an enemy
The intense pain searing through my back and abdomen is the indication I need that my baby is closer than ever. I try as much as I can to hide the pain as Renae sets the table for breakfast.
" You look pale Sally, should I call mum? " Renae says looking at me with concerned eyes
I shake my head in disagreement " You don't have to, I'll be fine " I say my voice barely audible
Walking from the bed to the table is so painful, I pray internally that Stephen finds me before my water breaks because giving birth here means death for me and my baby being at the disposal of my mother
" You really don't look good Sally "
I glare at her becoming irritated by her persistence " if you're so concerned about me, why don't you take me to a fucking hospital or leave me the fuck alone "
She raises her hands up in the air " Calm down, I'm just a bit worried about you "
I roll my eyes at her fake worry. The moment I admit that I'm having contractions and my water broke a few minutes in the bathroom before she walked in, she'll have mum burst in here and take my baby away from me.
There's a loud bang outside followed by shooting and chaos. I do a breathing exercise to calm the excitement admist the blinding pain
The blood drains from Renae's face when the door bursts open and Stephen walks in, shifting the atmosphere in the room.
" How . . How . . Di. . " She says backing into the wall in fear
Of course she'll wonder how he got to know that I'm here in this secluded place on the outskirts of Greenwood . . . Silly girl, I'd sent him a message with the smart watch he gave me yesterday.
" Are you okay?, you look so pale " He rushes to my side, worry etched in his green eyes
I'm unable to say anything, just shake my head. The drive from the hideout to the nearest hospital is long, I scream and scratch at his arms as I'm wheeled into the delivery wards. The pain becoming too unbearable and my vision giving up on me. If he'd just been a minute late . . .
Holding my son in my arms melts something inside of me, I coe and rock him while he cries. I'm mesmerised by his doey green eyes and Jet black curly hair, he is the perfect mix of Stephen and I.
" You're perfect " I say holding him closer afraid that this might just be a dream and my mum might just burst in and take him away from me.
" He looks just like you " Stephen says, his voice void of the excitement I expected
I take a moment to assess him, something was definitely up. He finally looks in my eyes, his green eyes seem to hold no form of affection for me. What could've gone wrong while I was away, Did my mother do something?, Did she outsmart me this time?
I want to ask why he's behaving weird but the door opens and a nurse walks in. She looks like she is in her mid sixties and her skin is darker, an evidence that she is definitely not a native of Greenwood.
" Hi, I'm Nurse Judy I'll be your personal nurse till you recover completely "
Her voice . . . Her voice brings a memory I never knew was there, the night Stephen's father died . . .
" Stephen? . . . " I look up at him confused
" what baby, you don't like the nurse I arranged for you? " He says in a mocking tone
I shake my head in disagreement, masking my emotions with a straight face " No, that's actually very thoughtful of you "
He nods taking the baby from my hand and putting him in the crib beside my bed
" He's already asleep, you should also take a minute or two to rest " He says going to take a seat on the sofa without taking his eyes off me for a moment
Nurse Judy smiles as she makes her way to my bed " You seem to be recovering well, your colour is back "
" That's the baby's magic " I return the smile
" I'll just check your vitals for now, okay? " She says while jotting something down
I nod a yes
I'm not prepared for the wave of memories that come rushing when she comes closer to me. The smell of fresh olive and pumpkin spice . . . . All I see is darkness, voices become distant and it feels like I'm in another world
" what's wrong? , Her nose is bleeding " I hear Stephen's voice but he seems very far
I hear beeping of machines loud and clear before everything goes black then the light comes on and I'm in a corner watching my father talking to a man
" You know I love you but the world will never accept us for who we really are, especially my father. He'll rather kill me than accept my relationship with a man " The Strange man says
" You care too much about what others think my love "
I move a bit closer from my hiding place to get a good look at the man's face, he smells like Olive and pumpkin spice
" I can't Greenie "
My father shakes his head frantically " We don't even have to stay here, we can go far away from here and away from your father "
" I can't do that. What about your wife and children, what about my son? " The man says turning to me . . . Those green eyes look deep into my soul even from the dark
