Chapter 39: A Sober Conversation
Chapter 39: A Sober Conversation
I sit there and stare at Stephen who just stare intensely back at me. He must've figured it out already do I just decide to come clean but he speaks before I can
" Who stabbed you " He asks, fury written all over his face
I break down in tears " I'm sorry for lying, the topic is just too sensitive for me. I hate talking about it "
His eyes softens and he cradles me in his hand rocking me like a baby " Don't cry baby, it's all my fault. I should not have brought it up "
" it's fine " I say still sobbing
He pats my back while rocking me back and forth.
Early in the morning, my parents are already at the front door ready to pick up their daughter. Dad looks at me with disappointment while mum just stares blankly at me but I can't be bothered with Stephen by my side rubbing my back.
" Can we talk Sallyanne " Mum asks in a low voice
Stephen is about to protest but I stop him. I convince him to let me have a conversation with my mum and he reluctantly agrees
" Do you think you child will take after you? " She says immediately we take our seats outside, her eyes distant and devoid of expression
I dismiss the servers taking the cup and pouring tea for myself then my mum.
I smile " I do want the baby to have Stephen's green eyes "
She shakes her head in disagreement " I don't mean that Sally "
I sip on my cup of tea "Then what do you mean mother" I say feigning ignorance
" Do you want your child to become a monster like you? "
I chuckle " Just like the way I took after you? "
" You're a complete replica of my Grandfather and I'm nothing like him " she gets defensive
" your Grandfather is a killer and you're a killer too, I've never killed anyone so why am I being compared to him. Is it because of my brown hair? Or the fact that I look like him? " I sigh, " If you ask me you're more similar to him than I am "
She tries to say something but I stop her " Don't give yourself silly excuses mother. Don't try to vindicate yourself, it won't change anything "
She laughs hysterically " so what are you trying to say Sallyanne?, you think I'm a psychopath like you and my Grandfather? "
" I don't think mother, I know you are. I know exactly what you are cause just like you see through me, I see through you too "
She laughs sarcastically " at least I don't pretend to be innocent "
I shrug " feigning innocence is why i have the upper hand cause no matter what you say, nobody will believe that I'm out to destroy my own family "
" You're a fucken demon "
" i learned from you mother, i watched and learned from the best " i smirk
She scoffs " we're nothing alike "
" yes, you're even worse than I am. Your Grandfather was a hot headed killer and then he sobered up when he met your grandmother but both of us?, we're not hot headed killers. We're just strategic, if I may use that word although you've killed before "
She sneers " we're nothing alike Sallyanne. You are a cunning fox, you are a manipulator Sallyanne . . . "
" So are you mother " I cut into her sentence, " You've always pointed accusing fingers at me but take a step back to evaluate yourself. My hate for you is justified by the years of abuse I've had to endure living with you but where does your hate for me stem from? "
She opens her mouth to say something but decides against it so I take that as my cue to continue
" you don't even know "
" Sally . . . " Her cold eyes soften
I raise my hand in the air to stop her pretence " You know that will not work on me "
" You abused me so much that I thought you were just incapable of loving a person but I saw the way you treated Renae and Stephen. When they fell, you helped them up and cleaned them but when I fell, you'd strike me. You went through so much to secure the marriage alliance meant for me and gave it to my sister then you got angry that I ended up in the marriage instead of her "
She scoffs " So what now?, you want me to hug you and say I'm sorry?, you want me to say I love you? " My blank stare is the only reply I give her, " I'm sorry you feel that way Sallyanne. I'm sorry I had you in the first place cause whenever I see you, I'm reminded of my Grandfather that tried to ruin my life. "
I take another sip of my tea while rubbing my belly to draw comfort " Before my memory loss, I had everything planned out already. . . . Every single thing and let me tell you this one thing mother " I lean over the table so we're breathing in each other's face
" I don't forgive you mother. Hating you this much has been such a booster for me over the years "
She laughs whole heartedly " It doesn't matter Sallyanne, I don't care "
Her new found nonchalance fuels my rage but I keep it contained " Oh really? " I lean back in my chair, my mind already imagining the different ways I could make her beg me again
She shrugs carelessly " You know you can't do anything to me "
" That's right I say thoughtfully but I know who I can do something to " I taunt swirling my tea cup, " I'll push Renae so much that living will be too painful for her. I won't just stop there, I'll take everything you've worked so hard for and give it to my unborn child " I say with a taunting smile
The fear comes and disappears even before I can bask in it.
" You won't do that " her voice cracks
I stand to my feet looking down at her with a cold stare " I don't care what it'll take or how long it'll take mother, I'll destroy you. I'll have you at my feet begging for mercy and desiring death, the things you've ever made sacrifices for, I'll take them away and crush them and on your death bed, I'll give you a hug then go back to living a beautiful life because karma is just a myth made up to stop humans from retaliating"
Her eyes still hold resistance " You're bluffing "
I laugh " Did your Grandfather ever bluff? "
I see her resolve break and crumble to the ground, her mask of nothingness is replaced with fear then rage but before she can do anything, I'm already back inside the house.
