Chapter 33: Unclear memories

Chapter 33: Unclear memories
I try my best to recollect the scattered and blurred pieces of memories in my head but it only making my head hurt. I lay back in bed with a frustrated sigh. Who's the other blonde girl, it can't be me cause I'm a natural brunette, Dad, Nathan and Renae are the only blondes in the family.
While I'm still thinking about the possibility of having another secret sister my only annoying, pain in the ass, entitled sister walks in with a smug smile on her face.
" Please don't start Renae, I'm not in the mood for your games "
She shrugs " I'm not here to play games "
" Then what do you want? " I glare at her
Her smile widens " You know right now I'm so glad that you crashed my wedding and stole my husband to be "
I roll my eyes, she's still not over this.
" It would've broken me to see our daddy dearest hate me because I let my husband use me to ruin my own family " Evil shimmers in her eyes
I shake my head unable to understand what she's saying " what does that even mean? "
" You know what I'm talking about Sallyanne. The marriage was just a sham to be involved in the seed process then playing the role of a loving husband so he can follow you to every family event then disappearing? "
My eyes widens in realisation feeding her joy
She cackles " The look on your face is priceless. Your sweet husband sneaks off everytime you bring him here to find evidence to incriminate your father and your entire family "
" You're lying, Stephen never used me. I don't even know anything about the seeds so why would he do that " I say my voice cracking
" Do you know why he didn't mind taking you instead of the bride he so deparately wanted, it's because he found out I knew absolutely nothing about the seeds and I'm not easy to deceive like you " She eyes me
" You're lying " I shot back
She laughs even harder this time " Your husband left an hour ago without even checking if you were okay or not. I guess you're not that " Important " afterall Sally "
I shake my head in denial " Don't be a fool, connect the dots "
I don't know if I should take her words seriously or disregard it since her words could be coming from a place of spite. I get out of bed rushing downstairs to find mum and Dad pacing back and forth in the living room.
" Sally did you leave behind any note or journal or anything about the seeds " Dad runs up to me shaking me gently
I shake my head " I don't know what you're talking about "
Mum scoffs " There she goes pretending again "
" I really don't know "
Dad goes back to pacing back and forth, I want to leave to go ask Stephen for answers but the front door is locked from the outside, Mum laughs behind
" Silly girl thinks that fake husband of hers cares about her. He left you here to suffer with us cause you're more of a Green than a Colbert "
I have to try my best to keep the tears at bay while going back to my room with my head bowed. When I'm behind closed doors, I let myself cry.
It's mid noon when Mrs Moreen comes to the house. Her eyes hold apologies and deep regret when she sees my state.
" I'm sorry you have to go through all this while pregnant " she whispers reaching out to comfort me but I move away from her reach.
I keep my expression as cold as ice " Did you know about this? "
She smiles shaking her head softly " I didn't know about all this but I for sure knew that Stephen had always desired to bring your father to his knees "
My eyes widen in astonishment " But why? " I ask confused
She caresses my shoulder and I don't move away from her this time " I can't tell you but time will tell " she moves closer to me " but I promise you Sally, he really does care about you "
I laugh sarcastically placing my hand on my belly " Care? "
She nods " Yes dear, I know he'll never get you involved in wha. . . "
" You're not welcome here " Mum cuts into the conversation
I didn't even notice when she entered. She crosses her hand over her chest " Please leave Mrs Moreen Colbert. Go back home to your son that is so deparate to destroy my family that he had to marry and manipulate my most naive daughter "
Mrs Moreen glares at her but she doesn't counter her statement or try to defend Stephen which goes to show that there's a bit of truth in what my mother is saying.
" Please take care of yourself and the baby my dear " She says before leaving and mum shoots me a dangerous glare
We're kept in till the weekend before my Parent's are allowed to go address the press and during this period, I spam Stephen with calls and messages but he doesn't return any. Eventually, I give up trying to reach out to him. I look outside the stormy clouds forming when I suddenly remember the box I'd picked from Mum's room. I rush to my wardrobe where I'd hidden it and take it out.
I spend the next week going through the photo album and it turns out Dad and Mum really did know the Whitehalls, they had more of a personal relationship than a political or official one. Most of the pictures are from private dinners at home. I'm halfway through the album when a page catches my attention. There's a picture of three children, one I recognise as Rain then the blonde girl in my dream then a baby. I take the picture out and there's an inscription on the back
" Rain, Sally and Renae "
" I know what you are " Those words play in my head again then familiarity starts creeping in. Aunty Enny was the one who took the picture but who's that. I just remember mum screaming " Enny hurry up with the pictures so we can start eating already "
" Bruce get the plates on the table " Her voice becomes distant.
I rub my baby bump for comfort before searching again for the memory my brain so desperately needed to get. I could feel it deep within me that a part of me was missing.
The image in my head is blurry, I remember the scent of raspberry jams, hot chickens, mashed potatoes . . . It was during a thanksgiving dinner at but how can I recall that if I was just a baby?. Now that I think about it, the only memory of my childhood I have is waking up in this room an eleven year old. What happened in my life before that time.
