Chapter 30: leaving is hard but necessary
Leaving Is hard but necessary, more than the connection and love I shared with Stephen, the life of my child and my wellbeing was at stake. Someone's out there trying to kill me and now that I think about it, the incident with Ted is more than a coincidence. He was definitely lured into my room while I was alone which is a little bit too similar with rain's experience. So maybe the Culprit in that case is the same as the person that tried to kill me.
Throughout the drive home, I'm unable to take my mind off the fact that Stephen had a Fiancée and he pushed her to her death. My heart hurts when I think about the fact that to him, I'm just a replacement. No wonder he was so good to me even from the first day, it mad sense that he always comforted me and listened despite his cold demeanour outside . . . And here I was thinking we had something so good going on for us, I feel so used and betrayed but I push those thoughts to the back of my mind, I have to go through the records in the library about the previous Mayor before my baby decides it's time to sleep.
I find what I'm looking for in no time amongst Dad's important files stacked at the end of the library and I take them up to my room before my mum and my sister come back from wherever they went to. My phone beeps and it's a message from Stephen saying that he's decided to give me the space that I asked for but if I go back to his house again, he's never letting me leave again. I roll my eyes, putting my phone away immediately cause I needed to do what Stephen never tried to do, uncover the Culprit behind Rain's case and probably give her justice in the process.
I don't know when I slept off but I wake up to chaos in the house. I look outside and it's already dark outside and I could tell mum was yelling at Dad for taking me back.
" Why would you bring her back here?, I don't want her here. She's an eyesore " Mum says as I walk into the living room
Dad's brows furrow " Gisele she's my Daughter and she's your daughter too "
Mum folds her arm over her chest " Think about your other daughter for once Green, think about how this girl's presence will affect her "
Renae chips in " I don't mind tho, just let it be mum "
My eyes dart to her exposed arms, it's unlike her to wear sleeveless dresses. Renae flashes me a tight smile, cowering under my scrutinising gaze.
Mum groans in frustration " when things go wrong you guys can go blame yourselves "
Why was mum getting so worked up with my presence. I'd managed to miss her last night and this morning but I guess nothing can be hidden from mum for too long. Renae leaves too and I'm left alone with Dad.
He let's out an exasperated sigh " I'm sorry about your mum's behaviour "
I smile " it's fine Dad, it's not your fault "
He nods in agreement with his head low in shame or disappointment, I can't tell.
" I've never really been there for you. I should've stood up for you often Sally but all I did was cower and watch you get treated like trash "
I look at him trying to gauge his emotions " why are you saying all this Dad? "
He shakes his head " Nothing ", He looks up finally with a sad smile " How have you been "
I shrug " Not too bad but overall really excited for the arrival of my baby "
He nods again thoughtfully " And . . . . Your husband? "
I shrug again " I don't know and I don't really care at the moment "
We talk for a while about the project he's still working on while I muster the courage to ask the question that's weighing on my mind. . . .
" We're you acquinted with Mayor Whitehall " I finally ask
His eyes goes round and his skin pinkish, the question seems to have thrown him off balance and put him in an uncomfortable position. He coughs then clears his throat but doesn't answer the question
I raise my brows " or was he affiliated with mum? "
He jumps on his feet immediately in a defensive stance " No " He says immediately but I don't believe him, I know he's lying . . . . His skin going pinkish sells him out all the time.
