Chapter 23 Chapter 23
Chapter 23 Chapter 23
EVELYN POV
The dock felt longer than it ever had before. Each step echoed softly over the water, the wood shifting under my feet as if it, too, was aware of how wrong everything was. The lake rippled in slow circles around the posts, calm despite the terror pulsing in the air.
Ethan’s breathing was loud behind the tape. His eyes were bloodshot, locked on me as if begging me not to come any closer. His entire body trembled with visible fear, sweat dripping down his temples. I could almost feel the panic rolling off him.
Lila waited behind him, her hands resting lightly on the back of his chair. Her posture was straight, her expression smooth and composed. She watched each step I took with quiet interest, like she was observing a predictable reaction in an experiment.
Behind me, Daniel’s voice broke through the heavy silence.
“Evelyn, stop. Please.”
I did not stop.
I took another step.
Lila smiled faintly. “You always were the most reasonable one.”
I kept walking until I reached the middle of the dock. Any further and the boards started to creak more sharply beneath my weight, loosened by years of storms and wear.
Lila’s eyes stayed on mine. Her gaze was calm, unreadable.
“You can stop there,” she said. “Any closer and the board beneath Ethan may shift.”
I froze immediately.
Ethan whimpered through the tape.
Lila brushed his shoulder lightly, as if offering comfort. “You are alright, Ethan. We are only talking.”
Daniel cursed under his breath behind me. He moved closer to the dock, but the dean grabbed his arm.
“Stay back,” the dean said. “You rush her and Ethan goes down.”
Daniel shook him off. “She is going to kill him anyway.”
“No,” the dean said. “She wants leverage. She wants control. We need to handle this carefully.”
Lila laughed softly. “I am right here. You can speak to me directly.”
Daniel glared at her. “Let him go.”
“That depends,” Lila said slowly. “On Evelyn.”
I felt my pulse in my throat. “What do you want from me?”
Her eyes softened, almost tender. “I want to talk. A real conversation. Not the version you and Daniel rehearsed. I want the truth.”
“You already have the truth,” I said. “We all saw it.”
Lila shook her head gently. “No. You saw shadows. Misinterpretations. Memories shaped by fear. You saw what Daniel wanted you to see.”
Daniel snapped. “Do not put this on me.”
Lila sighed. “Daniel. You always see yourself as the hero, but you have been blind from the beginning.”
Daniel took a step forward, but the dock creaked violently under Ethan’s chair. Lila raised a hand without looking.
“Move again and he goes under. I mean it.”
Daniel froze instantly.
Lila returned her gaze to me.
“You do not have to defend him,” she said. “You never did. I know how you felt when Alex drifted away. I know how confused you were. I know how much it hurt.”
I swallowed. “Do not pretend you care about my feelings.”
Her expression shifted into something sad. “But I do. I always did.”
“You stalked me,” I said.
She blinked once. “I watched you because you were vulnerable. You were being manipulated, and I wanted to protect you.”
Daniel barked out a harsh laugh. “You were the one manipulating her.”
Lila ignored him completely.
“You kept telling yourself you were in danger,” she said softly to me. “But you were not. I was watching to make sure you did not walk into something harmful. I was making sure you did not fall for the wrong people.”
“You followed me to my dorm,” I said.
“Yes,” she said simply. “Because you were drifting toward the wrong influence.”
Daniel stepped forward again, and everyone tensed.
Lila smiled at him. “He wants you isolated. Dependent on him. He wanted the same thing from Alex.”
“That is a lie,” Daniel said.
Lila tilted her head. “You think I did not see how you looked at him? How you tried to pull him away from everyone? You blamed me for everything, when you were the one pushing him over the edge.”
Ethan struggled violently in the chair.
Lila rested her hands gently on his shoulders. “Shh. We are only explaining.”
The calmness in her voice made my stomach churn.
“Let him go,” I said. “Stop using him.”
Lila looked offended. “Using him? No. He is part of this story. He put himself in the center the moment he lied about me.”
“He did not lie,” Daniel said.
Lila’s expression didn’t move. “He did. He always had trouble understanding what he saw. He spun stories to feel important.”
Ethan shook his head so violently the chair creaked, but she ignored him completely.
“Why bring him here?” I asked. “Why take him from campus?”
Lila inhaled slowly, as if the answer were obvious. “Because you needed motivation. You would not have come if he did not need you.”
“That is not true.”
“It is,” she said gently. “You need a reason to be brave. He is your reason.”
I felt a shaking anger rise in my chest. “You do not get to explain my motives.”
“Then explain them yourself,” she said. “Why did you step forward? Why risk your safety?”
“Because Ethan deserves to live,” I said. “Because he told the truth when no one else did. And because I am not afraid of you anymore.”
Lila blinked slowly.
Her fingers curled slightly on the wood.
A sign of irritation.
“You should be afraid,” she said. “Not of me. Of what happens when a truth is twisted.”
“You twisted everything,” Daniel said. “And you are still doing it.”
Lila sighed, annoyed. “Daniel. Always interrupting.”
She looked at me again.
“You believe I hurt him,” she said. “You believe I pushed Alex into something terrible.”
“You did,” I said.
“No,” she said. “Alex loved me. He turned to me when he felt lost. I gave him structure. Discipline. Guidance.”
“You controlled him,” Ethan tried to scream through the tape.
Lila ignored him like he was background noise.
“I kept him from making bad decisions,” she said. “You do not understand how much he depended on me.”
“He wanted to leave you,” I said.
Her eyes darkened.
“He said things he did not mean,” she said. “People say cruel things when they are scared.”
“You were the one scaring him,” Daniel said.
She shot him a sharp look. “You were the one filling his head with nonsense. You told him I was dangerous. You planted doubt in him.”
Daniel shook his head. “He was terrified before I ever said a word.”
Lila closed her eyes briefly, gathering herself. When she opened them, her face was smooth again.
“Evelyn,” she said quietly. “I am not your enemy. I never was. You and I want the same thing. We want the truth.”
“No,” I said. “You want control.”
She took one step forward.
Ethan’s chair creaked dangerously.
Everyone froze.
Lila placed her hand on the back of his chair again, steadying it.
“You think this is about control,” she said softly. “It is about loyalty. About honesty. About people understanding who is good for them and who is not.”
“Alex was good without you,” I said.
She smiled gently. “He was empty without me.”
Ethan screamed through the tape again.
Lila finally addressed him. “You should stop that. You are going to hurt your throat.”
Daniel shouted, “Untie him now.”
She blinked at Daniel. “Are you going to keep interrupting?”
He stepped closer.
She pressed harder on the chair.
The board beneath Ethan cracked sharply.
“No,” I cried. “Stop.”
She eased the pressure.
The board held.
“See?” she said calmly. “I am not unreasonable. I do not want anyone to get hurt. But you need to understand something.”
She looked at me again.
Her eyes sharp.
Cold.
Calculating.
“You were supposed to understand me,” she said. “You were supposed to see I was protecting him. Protecting all of you.”
“You were protecting your ego,” I said.
She blinked.
Another crack in her mask.
“You do not know what I sacrificed for him,” she said. “What I gave up. What I risked.”
“You risked nothing,” Daniel said. “Alex risked everything.”
Her expression sharpened. “You ruined him.”
“No,” I said. “You did.”
Lila’s lips curved slowly.
“You really think that,” she said. “You truly do.”
Her voice no longer trembled.
It was steady.
Cold.
And deliberate.
“You think I killed him,” she said, staring directly at me.
My breath caught.
“You think I forced him to the lake,” she said. “You think I cornered him. You think I made him disappear.”
Daniel’s fists clenched.
“Stop talking,” he said.
Lila tilted her head. “Why? Because I am finally saying the quiet part out loud?”
The dean stepped closer. “Lila. End this. Now.”
She didn’t even look at him.
She only looked at me.
“You think I killed him,” she repeated softly. “And maybe I did.”
The dock went silent.
Even the wind stopped.
Ethan shook violently.
Daniel cursed under his breath.
The dean froze.
Maya grabbed my arm hard.
Lila leaned down and whispered something into Ethan’s ear.
His eyes went wide with horror.
Then she straightened again.
“But do you know what the funny part is?” she asked. “No one will ever believe you.”
Daniel took a step so sharp that the dock shuddered.
Lila pressed her foot to the base of the chair.
“Move again,” she warned softly, “and he goes in the water.”
Daniel stopped instantly.
I felt my heart slam against my ribs.
“What do you want?” I whispered.
Lila smiled slowly.
“Your silence,” she said. “Your agreement. Your acknowledgment that you were wrong. That you and Daniel misremembered everything.”
“No,” I said.
“Yes,” she replied calmly. “If you say it, I will push the chair back to solid footing. I will let him go. If you do not, he falls.”
Ethan cried behind the tape.
Daniel shook his head. “Evelyn. Do not.”
Maya whispered, “She will not let him go. She is lying. She is using him.”
The dean stepped forward. “Lila. Listen to me. You have crossed a line you cannot come back from.”
She ignored him completely.
She stared right at me.
“You decide,” she said softly. “Say Daniel manipulated you. Say Ethan imagined everything. Say Alex was confused. Say I am innocent.”
My throat tightened painfully.
“Evelyn,” Daniel whispered, voice breaking. “Do not give her what she wants.”
Lila leaned forward.
Ethan’s chair tilted.
His scream tore through the tape.
I stepped forward instinctively.
Daniel shouted.
Everything felt like slow motion.
Lila’s eyes lit with cold satisfaction.
“It seems we are out of time,” she whispered.
And then she pushed.
The chair lurched.
The board cracked.
Ethan tipped forward.
And the world snapped into chaos.
