Chapter 52 Rescue

Chapter 52 Rescue
Rescue

The explosion came first, a thunderous blast that shook the concrete walls of Sophia's prison and sent dust raining from the ceiling. She jerked awake from the pain-induced haze she'd been floating in, her broken finger throbbing in time with her racing heartbeat.

"What the hell was that?" Vincent shouted, already moving toward the door with his weapon drawn.

Marco was on his phone, barking orders in rapid Italian, his face pale with something that looked like genuine fear. More explosions followed, closer this time, along with the unmistakable sound of automatic gunfire.

"It's the Rossis," someone yelled from the hallway. "They're here! They've breached the perimeter!"

The door to Sophia's holding room burst open, and one of the guards rushed in. "Boss, we need to move her now. They're coming through the east entrance."

"How many?" Marco demanded.

"All of them," the guard replied, his voice shaking. "Diego Rossi brought his entire army. We're outnumbered three to one."

Sophia felt something like hope flare in her chest despite the pain. Ethan had found her. Somehow, despite the odds, he'd tracked her to this underground facility and brought enough force to break through their defenses.

"We use her as a shield," Marco said, grabbing Sophia's chair and dragging it toward the door. "If they want her alive, they won't risk..."

The wall to Sophia's left exploded inward, showering the room with chunks of concrete and steel. Through the smoke and dust, she could see figures moving with military precision, their weapons trained on every target in the room.

And at the center of them, his face a mask of cold fury, was Ethan.

He didn't speak, didn't hesitate, didn't offer any warning. The first shot took out the guard who'd been reaching for Sophia. The second caught Vincent in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending his weapon clattering to the floor. The third...

Sophia closed her eyes as Marco's blood splattered across her face, unable to watch but hearing the wet thud of his body hitting the concrete.

"Clear the room," Ethan's voice cut through the chaos, cold and authoritative. "Secure the perimeter. I want every member of the Benedetti family who participated in this found and brought to me alive."

Footsteps moved around her, efficient and controlled. Sophia could hear doors being kicked in, shouts of surrender, the occasional burst of gunfire. But through it all, she kept her eyes closed, afraid of what she would see when she opened them.

"Sophia." Ethan's voice was close now, gentle in a way that contrasted sharply with the violence she'd just witnessed. "Open your eyes, baby. It's over."

She forced her eyes open and found him kneeling in front of her chair, his hands already working to untie the ropes that bound her. His face was spattered with blood, none of it his own, she realized with a sick lurch, and his eyes blazed with something feral and protective.

"I'm sorry," he said, his voice rough with emotion as he took in her injuries. "I'm so sorry I let this happen to you. I'm sorry it took me three days to find you."

"Marcus?" she managed to ask, her voice barely a whisper through her cracked lips.

"Safe. With Isabella at the mansion." Ethan's fingers stilled on the ropes for just a moment. "God, Sophia, what did they do to you?"

She looked down at her broken finger, at the burns on her arms, at the bruises that covered nearly every visible inch of her skin. "They wanted information about your operations. I couldn't tell them anything because I don't know anything."

Something that might have been grief flashed across Ethan's face. "That's what saved you," he said quietly. "If you'd known anything, if you'd been able to tell them what they wanted, they would have killed you immediately."

He finished untying the ropes and carefully lifted her from the chair. Sophia's legs buckled when she tried to stand, but Ethan caught her easily, cradling her against his chest like she weighed nothing.

"I've got you," he murmured against her hair. "I've got you now, and I'm never letting you go again."

As he carried her through the facility, Sophia couldn't help but see the aftermath of his rescue operation. Bodies lined the hallways, some lying still and some moaning in pain. Blood pooled on the concrete floor, and the smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the air.

This was Ethan Rossi unleashed, not the controlled businessman who conducted meetings in expensive suits, but the monster his father had trained him to be. The man who could order systematic violence and execute it with chilling efficiency.

"How many?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

"How many what?"

"How many people died to get me out?"

Ethan's arms tightened around her. "Don't think about that right now. Just focus on staying awake until we get you to a hospital."

But Sophia couldn't stop thinking about it. As they emerged from the underground facility into the harsh afternoon sunlight, she saw the true scope of what Ethan had done. Dozens of vehicles surrounded the building, and armed men moved with purpose through the area. This hadn't been a rescue operation—it had been a military assault.

Diego Rossi stood near a black SUV, his face unreadable as he watched his son carry his daughter-in-law toward safety. When their eyes met, Sophia saw something that might have been satisfaction, as if this moment had proven something he'd been waiting to see confirmed.

"You came back," Diego said to Ethan, his voice carrying across the distance.

"I had no choice," Ethan replied coldly. "You made sure of that."

"I made sure you understood priorities," Diego corrected. "Family protects family. Even when we disagree, even when we're angry with each other, we close ranks against outside threats."

Sophia could feel the tension in Ethan's body, could sense how much this moment was costing him. He'd sworn never to return to his father's control, had given up everything for a chance at freedom with her. And now he was back, bound once again by obligations and debts that could never be fully repaid.

"Get her to the medical facility," Diego ordered. "Dr. Martinelli is waiting to treat her injuries."

As Ethan placed her carefully in the back of the SUV, Sophia caught his hand with her good one. "What did you promise him?" she asked. "What did you give up to get his help finding me?"

Ethan looked at her with eyes that held love and resignation in equal measure. "Everything," he said simply. "I gave him everything."

The SUV pulled away from the carnage, heading back toward the mansion and the world Sophia had thought they'd escaped. Through the rear window, she could see smoke rising from the underground facility, could see the bodies being loaded into unmarked vans, could see the evidence of Ethan's brutal love being systematically erased.

He had saved her. He had mobilized an army, had killed without hesitation, had sacrificed his hard-won freedom to bring her home safely. It was the most romantic and terrible thing anyone had ever done for her.

And as they drove through the city streets toward a future that would bind them even more tightly to the Rossi family, Sophia realized the full truth of her situation.

Ethan's love could protect her from almost anything. But it couldn't protect her from the darkness that came with being loved by a man who would burn the world down to keep her safe.

That darkness was now part of her too, stained into her soul along with the blood on Ethan's hands.
