Chapter 48 Rebound
Rebound
"I heard you, you know," Sophia said quietly as they crossed the threshold of the modest house tucked away in the hills outside the city. "Yesterday's night when you thought I was sleeping… I heard almost everything you said to me."
Ethan froze in the doorway, his hand still on the light switch. The safe house was simple but comfortable… a far cry from the mansion's opulence, but warm and welcoming in a way that felt more like a home than anywhere Sophia had lived since her parents died.
"Everything?" he asked, his voice careful, uncertain.
"The apologies. The explanations about Elena and the planted evidence. The promises." She turned to face him, and for the first time in months, there was no anger or fear in her eyes. "The part where you told me you loved me."
The admission hung between them in the small living room, heavy with implications and possibilities. Ethan closed the door behind them and engaged the security locks with practiced efficiency, but his movements were slower than usual, as if he was buying time to find the right words.
"I meant every word," he said finally, turning to meet her gaze. "Even if I thought you couldn't hear me, I meant it all."
"Why didn't you say those things when I was awake?" Sophia asked, settling onto the couch and tucking her legs beneath her. "Why did it take thinking I was unconscious for you to be honest about your feelings?"
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that made him look younger, more vulnerable than the composed crime lord he usually presented to the world. "Because I'm a coward," he said simply. "Because admitting I love you means admitting that my father was right… that you've made me weak, that you've changed me in ways that go against everything I was raised to be."
"And now?"
"Now I don't care," he said, moving to sit beside her on the couch, close enough that she could see the exhaustion and relief warring in his dark eyes. "I don't care if love makes me weak. I don't care if choosing you over family business makes me a failure as a Rossi. I care about you, about us, about having a chance to build something real together."
Sophia studied his face, searching for any sign of the cold, controlled man who had dismissed their intimate night as a mistake. But that version of Ethan seemed to have been left behind at the mansion, along with everything else from their old life.
"What happens now?" she asked. "Where do we go from here?"
"We stay here," Ethan said, gesturing around the comfortable space. "This house is completely off the grid… no ties to the family, no connections that can be traced back to Rossi interests. We could live here for the main time, maybe forever if that's what it takes to keep you safe."
"Forever?" The word carried weight, implications of a life completely separate from the criminal empire that had defined Ethan's entire existence.
"If that's what you want," he said, reaching for her hand with careful gentleness. "If you can forgive me for the pain I've caused, if you can trust me to be better than I was, then yes. Forever."
Sophia looked down at their joined hands… his scarred and strong, hers smaller but no longer trembling with fear or uncertainty. "What about Marcus? He's still at the mansion, dependent on the medical care and routine you provided."
"I've already made arrangements," Ethan said. "Dr. Chen will continue his care privately, and I have people I trust who will ensure his safety and wellbeing. He can join us here once we're certain the situation has stabilized."
The fact that he'd thought ahead, that he'd planned for her brother's needs even while choosing to abandon his own family, made something warm unfurl in Sophia's chest.
"You gave up everything for me," she said softly. "Your inheritance, your position in the family, your entire identity as Diego's heir."
"I gave up a prison," Ethan corrected, lifting their joined hands to press a gentle kiss to her knuckles. "I gave up a life where love was seen as weakness and where the only emotions allowed were anger and ambition. I traded all of that for a chance to be happy with the woman I love."
The declaration was simple, honest, without the dramatic flourishes or calculated manipulation that had characterized so much of their relationship. This was just Ethan, stripped of his armor and defenses, offering her his heart without conditions or expectations.
"I love you too," Sophia said, the words coming easily now that they were away from the mansion's oppressive atmosphere. "Despite everything that happened, despite the pain and betrayal and confusion, I never stopped loving you. Even when I was planning to run away with Mercy, part of me was hoping you'd give me a reason to stay."
"I'm giving you that reason now," Ethan said, his voice rough with emotion. "I'm giving you all of me… not the Rossi heir, not the crime lord, not the man my father raised me to be. Just me, exactly as I am, for as long as you'll have me."
Sophia felt tears prick her eyes, but for the first time in months, they were tears of relief rather than pain. "What if we don't know how to be normal people? What if we don't know how to have a relationship that isn't built on contracts and power dynamics?"
"Then we'll learn together," Ethan said, cupping her face with his free hand. "We'll make mistakes and figure it out as we go. We'll build something new, something that belongs to us instead of being dictated by family expectations or business interests."
As he leaned closer, Sophia could see herself reflected in his dark eyes… not the broken, hollow-eyed woman who had been trapped in the mansion, but someone who looked alive again, hopeful again.
"Are you sure about this?" she whispered as his thumb traced her cheekbone with tender reverence. "Are you sure you won't regret giving up everything you've ever known?"
"I'm sure," he said, his forehead coming to rest against hers. "Because what I've known was never really living. It was just surviving, just going through the motions of a life someone else designed for me. But this… being here with you, choosing our own path… this is the first time I've ever felt truly alive."
When he kissed her, it was with a gentleness that spoke of new beginnings rather than desperate passion. This wasn't the urgent claiming of their first time together, or the confused aftermath of planted evidence and broken trust. This was two people choosing each other freely, completely, without reservations or conditions.
As they held each other in the quiet safety of their new home, Sophia realized that sometimes the end of one story was just the beginning of another. The scared young woman who had thrown dirty water at a stranger to protect someone she thought was in danger was gone, replaced by someone stronger, wiser, more certain of her own worth.
And the cold, controlled man who had seen love as weakness had been transformed into someone capable of choosing happiness over duty, love over fear, hope over the familiar darkness of his birthright.
They had each other now, and a chance to write their own story… one built on love freely given rather than contracts and obligations.
