Chapter 47 Diego's Rage

Chapter 47 Diego's Rage
Diego's Rage

"Bring her down here immediately," Diego's voice thundered through the mansion's main hall, his rage from the previous night having crystallized into something cold and calculating. "I want everyone to see what happens when someone disrespects the Rossi name."

Sophia stood at the top of the grand staircase, still feeling unsteady from whatever had been in her drink the night before. Agatha had escorted her from her room with false gentleness, but the grip on her arm had been firm enough to leave marks. Below in the foyer, she could see a gathering that made her blood run cold.

Nearly thirty people filled the space… guards, household staff, low-level family associates, even some of the groundskeepers who rarely came inside the main house. All of them stood in a loose circle around Diego, who waited in the center like a judge preparing to deliver a sentence.

"Come down, daughter-in-law," Diego called up to her, his voice carrying a mocking edge on the family title. "Don't keep us waiting. We have business to discuss."

With no choice but to comply, Sophia descended the stairs on trembling legs. Each step felt like walking toward an execution, and the eyes of everyone in the room tracked her movement with the kind of fascination reserved for watching accidents happen.

When she reached the bottom, Diego gestured for her to step into the center of the circle. The assembled crowd shifted to make room, but no one met her eyes. They all stared at the floor or at Diego, waiting to see what their patriarch would do.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Diego began, his voice carrying the authority of a man accustomed to commanding absolute attention. "Last night, you witnessed something unprecedented in the history of this family. You saw a member of our household humiliate us in front of our peers and allies."

Sophia felt heat flood her cheeks as the memory of the ball came rushing back. The drugged champagne, the loss of control, the things she'd shouted in front of hundreds of witnesses. But mixed with the shame was anger… anger at being manipulated, at being set up, at having her words used against her when she'd been defending herself.

"You saw someone bite the hand that feeds her," Diego continued, beginning to pace around Sophia like a predator circling wounded prey. "Someone who took our protection, our generosity, our name, and threw it all back in our faces like garbage."

"I was drugged," Sophia said quietly, the words escaping before she could stop them.

The sound of her voice seemed to enrage Diego further. "Drugged?" he repeated, his voice dripping with contempt. "Is that your excuse for public hysteria? For accusations and threats made in front of the most powerful families in the city?"

"It's not an excuse," Sophia replied, finding her voice growing stronger despite her fear. "It's the truth. Someone spiked my drink to make me lose control, and it worked exactly as they planned."

"The truth," Diego laughed harshly, "is that you revealed your true nature last night. The truth is that you're an ungrateful, unstable woman who never deserved the privilege of carrying the Rossi name."

Several people in the crowd shifted uncomfortably, but no one spoke up in her defense. These were people who depended on Diego for their livelihoods, their safety, their place in the world. They wouldn't risk his wrath to protect her.

"The truth," Diego continued, his voice rising with theatrical passion, "is that you have brought shame to this family that will take years to repair. The truth is that your very presence in this house is a constant reminder of our moment of weakness."

"Father."

The single word cut through Diego's speech like a blade. Every head in the room turned toward the main entrance, where Ethan stood with his hands clenched at his sides and murder in his dark eyes.

"Ethan," Diego said, his tone shifting to something that might have been relief. "Perfect timing. I was just explaining to everyone what happens when…"

"What happens when you orchestrate a public humiliation to justify destroying an innocent woman?" Ethan interrupted, stepping into the circle with the kind of controlled violence that made the crowd instinctively step back.

"Innocent?" Diego's face flushed with anger. "Did you not witness her behavior last night? Did you not see her pointing fingers and making wild accusations…"

"I saw a woman who'd been drugged into losing control," Ethan said flatly. "I saw someone who was set up by people who wanted to see her destroyed. And now I see my father putting her on trial like some medieval tyrant."

The assembled crowd seemed to collectively hold their breath. No one had ever heard Ethan speak to his father with such open defiance, such complete dismissal of patriarchal authority.

"How dare you…" Diego began, but Ethan cut him off again.

"How dare I protect my wife?" Ethan moved to stand beside Sophia, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "How dare I defend the woman you've been trying to destroy for long now?"

"She is the one destroying us!" Diego roared, his composure finally cracking completely. "She is the weakness that will bring down everything we've built!"

"The only thing destroying this family is your obsession with control," Ethan replied with deadly calm. "Your inability to accept that I might choose something for myself instead of letting you dictate every aspect of my life."

Diego stared at his son in shock, as if seeing him clearly for the first time. The crowd around them was so quiet that the sound of breathing seemed amplified.

"You would choose her over your own blood?" Diego asked, his voice hollow with disbelief.

"I would choose love over fear," Ethan replied, echoing the words he'd spoken the night before. "I would choose protecting the innocent over punishing the victim. I would choose being the man she believes I can be."

In that moment, Diego seemed to age ten years before their eyes. The powerful patriarch who had commanded respect and fear for decades suddenly looked like what he was… an old man watching his empire crumble because he couldn't accept change.

"Then you are both dead to me," he said quietly, but his words carried to every corner of the room. "You are no son of mine, and she is no daughter-in-law of mine."

"Fine," Ethan replied without hesitation. "If that's what it takes to protect her from your madness, then so be it."

The declaration sent shockwaves through the assembled crowd. They were witnessing the complete breakdown of the Rossi family hierarchy, the moment when the heir apparent chose his wife over his birthright.

"Get out," Diego said, his voice shaking with rage and something that might have been grief. "Both of you. Get out of my house and never come back."

"Gladly," Ethan said, taking Sophia's hand in his. "Come on. We're leaving."

As they walked toward the main entrance, the crowd parted before them like the Red Sea. Sophia could feel dozens of eyes on her back, could practically hear the whispered conversations that would spread through the criminal underworld within hours.

But for the first time since marrying into the Rossi family, she wasn't walking alone.

Ethan's hand was warm and steady in hers, and when she looked up at his profile, she saw something she'd never seen before… complete and absolute certainty about his choice.

He had chosen her. In front of witnesses, in defiance of everything he'd been raised to value, he had chosen her.

As they stepped out into the morning sun, leaving the mansion and everything it represented behind them, Sophia realized that sometimes destruction was just another word for freedom.

And for the first time in months, she felt like she could breathe again.
