Chapter 45 Elena's Gaslighting
Chapter 45 Elena's Gaslighting
Elena's Gaslighting
"Well, that was certainly illuminating," Elena said with calculated calm as the ballroom doors closed behind Sophia's retreating figure, her voice carrying just the right note of shocked disappointment. "I had no idea she was capable of such... public hysteria."
Diego stood rigid with fury, his face flushed dark red as he watched the remaining guests whisper among themselves, their phones already buzzing with messages about what they'd witnessed. The cream of their criminal world had just seen the Rossi patriarch's daughter-in-law completely lose control and air the family's dirty laundry in the most public way possible.
"Thirty years," Diego said through gritted teeth, his voice shaking with rage. "Thirty years of building respect, of maintaining dignity, of earning the fear and admiration of every family in this business. And that... that woman just destroyed it all in five minutes."
Ethan remained silent, his dark eyes fixed on the doors through which Sophia had been escorted. His expression was unreadable, but his hands were clenched into fists at his sides, and a muscle in his jaw was working furiously.
"She has to go," Elena continued, moving closer to the two men with the grace of a predator sensing wounded prey. "After tonight, after that spectacle, there's no way the family can recover its reputation with her still in the picture."
"Go?" Diego's voice was deadly quiet now, which was somehow more terrifying than his shouting. "She's done far more damage than can be solved by simply sending her away."
"Then what are you suggesting?" Elena asked, though something in her tone suggested she already knew the answer.
"I'm suggesting that some insults to the family honor can't be forgiven," Diego replied, his cold gaze finally shifting from the ballroom doors to his son. "Some betrayals require permanent solutions."
The implication hung in the air like poison gas. Elena's eyes lit up with barely concealed satisfaction, while Ethan's expression grew even more dangerous.
"You want to know what I think?" Elena said, pressing her advantage. "I think she's been planning this from the beginning. The sweet, innocent act, the gradual integration into the family, tonight's performance… it was all designed to humiliate you, to make you look weak in front of your peers."
"She accused you of drugging her drink," Ethan said quietly, his first words since the confrontation. "Was she lying about that too?"
Elena's confident expression flickered for just a moment. "She was drunk, Ethan. Hysterical. She was saying anything she could think of to deflect blame from her own behavior."
"That's not what I asked."
"Of course she was lying," Elena said with forced conviction. "Why would I do such a thing? What possible motive would I have?"
"Maybe the same motive that led you to spend months undermining my marriage," Ethan replied, his voice growing colder. "The same motive that made you so eager to remind Sophia of our past whenever she was within earshot."
"Ethan," Elena said, her mask of innocence starting to crack, "you can't seriously believe her wild accusations over…"
"Over the word of someone who's been trying to destroy my wife since the day I married her?" Ethan interrupted. "Someone who made it clear from the beginning that she considered my marriage temporary and expected to resume our relationship when it ended?"
"She brought disgrace to this family!" Elena said desperately, her voice rising as she saw the conversation slipping away from her. "Look around you! Look at the guests staring, whispering, recording everything on their phones! By tomorrow morning, every family in the city will know that the Rossis can't control their own house!"
"She's right," Diego said, his attention snapping back to his son. "The damage is done, and it's irreversible. That woman has made us look weak, incompetent, unable to maintain order in our own family."
"So what's your solution?" Ethan asked, though his tone suggested he already knew the answer.
"My solution is simple," Diego replied with chilling calm. "We remove the problem permanently. We bury it so deep that it never resurfaces to embarrass us again."
Elena's sharp intake of breath was audible, but her eyes gleamed with triumph. This was exactly what she'd been hoping for… Diego's fury would solve her Elena problem once and for all.
"You want me to kill my wife," Ethan said flatly.
"I want you to eliminate a threat to this family's survival," Diego corrected. "I want you to remember that your first loyalty is to the Rossi name, not to some unstable woman who's brought nothing but chaos into our lives."
"She's pregnant," Ethan lied without hesitation, the words coming out with startling conviction.
The statement hit the room like a bomb. Diego froze, his glass halfway to his lips, while Elena's face went white with shock.
"What?" Elena whispered.
"She's carrying my child," Ethan continued, building on the lie with desperate creativity. "The mood swings, the erratic behavior, the paranoia… it's all explained by hormones and stress. And you want me to kill the mother of my unborn child because she had too much champagne and said things she didn't mean?"
"You never mentioned…" Diego began.
"Because we were waiting to be certain," Ethan interrupted. "Because we wanted to get through the first trimester before making any announcements. But now you're asking me to murder my wife and my child because Elena's feelings are hurt."
The accusation hit Elena like a slap. "My feelings have nothing to do with this! She humiliated your entire family!"
"She was drugged," Ethan said with deadly certainty. "By someone who saw an opportunity to destroy my marriage and took it. Someone who's been working toward this moment since the day I said 'I do.'"
"You can't prove that," Elena said desperately.
"Can't I?" Ethan's smile was sharp as a blade. "Because I have security footage of you talking to that waiter twenty minutes before Sophia's drink was served. I have records of the money you gave him… And I can still conduct a laboratory analysis of her blood that will show exactly what kind of drug was used to make her lose control."
The lies rolled off his tongue with practiced ease, but they hit their target perfectly. Elena's face crumpled as she realized her carefully laid plan had been exposed.
"Even if that's true," Diego said slowly, "the damage is still done. The family's reputation is still destroyed."
"Then we rebuild it," Ethan replied firmly. "We control the narrative, we manage the fallout, and we make sure everyone knows that my wife was the victim of sabotage by a jealous ex-lover who couldn't accept that she'd been replaced."
"And if I refuse to let you rebuild?" Diego asked quietly. "If I decide that the only solution is a permanent one?"
Ethan turned to face his father fully, his dark eyes blazing with something that might have been love or might have been rage. "Then you'll have to kill me first. Because I will die before I let anyone in this family hurt her."
The declaration rang through the ballroom like a gunshot. Diego stared at his son in shock, while Elena made a sound that might have been a sob or a scream.
"You would choose her over your own blood?" Diego asked in disbelief.
"I would choose love over fear," Ethan replied. "I would choose protecting the innocent over punishing the victim. I would choose being the man my wife believes I can be over being the monster you raised me to become."
In the stunned silence that followed, Elena realized that her plan had not just failed… it had completely backfired. Instead of driving Ethan away from Sophia, it had driven him toward her more completely than she could have imagined.
And now she was the one who had become expendable.
