Chapter 151 WARD OF LIES
Chapter 151 WARD OF LIES
NIRELLE
By the next time I am conscious of my environment, the room has changed to something nicer but still feels like it's out of a horror movie. "Are you finally awake?"
The voice is familiar but feels distant, like something I knew from my childhood and then forgot all about. I try to raise my head and realise that I am in the psychiatric ward I had moved my mom to. What was she lying at here? Claiming I was carsey? How were they going to push me into a marriage with Cassian if they did this?
"Are you?" I look up at the voice, and now the man is standing right beside the bed. "Are you feeling much better?"
"What happened?" I groan as I push myself into a sitting position.
"Apparently, you currently have a mental condition," he said, like he was revealing a big secret to me.
"Of course." I roll my eyes because that was what would make them bring me in here. "Who brought me?"
"Yvette," he said after hesitating to speak. He saw that I was not going to back down until I got an answer, so he spoke. "But I think she wanted to save you from your stepfather."
His words flooded the image in my mind: he was about to rape me, and I had fought back. Maybe if I had fought back a few years ago, I would have been free earlier.
"I heard he raped you."
"Did Yvette tell you that?" I asked, and my throat felt drier than before. "Did she tell you that she allowed him to creep into my bed every night and then allowed him to rape me?"
"She is sorry." I stop the tears that are about to flow down because they do not deserve it. I had gotten out, and it might not seem like it at the moment, but I could not go back to being his plaything or just agreeing to everything they wanted as they reeled my life in like it was theirs.
"Don't tell me you've forgiven her."
"I had a lot of time in here, and I always loved her."
"Even after what she did to you?" I scoffed. Inabel was unable to understand why he would forgive her so easily. "After she locked you up for eleven years, you think it is okay?" I ask, and he looks away. I climb down from the bed and ignore him. I take a glass and fill it up with water from the jar on the table. "With a few crocodile tears, you are ready to forgive and let go?"
"I just think that..."
"You think? You do not know anything about what happened. Yvette made our lives a living hell just so she could live large, and I can never ever forgive her for it, even if she continues living her life paying for it, and you shouldn't either." I squeeze the cup as I raise it to my mouth, downing it all at once.
"Nirelle..."
"If this is about how to forgive her, then I really do not want to talk about it," I finish and lie back on the bed with my back to him. How could he think of being generous when he had nothing? Was it normal for a father and daughter to be locked up in the same ward just so she could have what she wanted?
Later that evening, when an attendant came to deliver dinner, I asked her for help.
"I am sorry, but I can't help you; the last woman who helped you ended up losing her job," she said. I could see that she was trying to take care of herself first, and I could not blame her. This was supposed to be the normal reaction from anybody regarding a matter like this.
"I do not want to lose my job," she said, and then left the room before I could think of anything else to ask her. That night, I tossed and turned in bed. O had to escape and fire Lucien before he could get hitched legally to Olivia. I did not sign the papers, so it should count for something, right?
By the time I was already drifting to sleep that night, the door opened and closed. I try not to focus on who it was. I feel a hand on my shoulder and then a little shake.
"Nirelle?" My eyes shoot open at the sound of Zane's voice. Tears welled in my eyes, as I had been expecting them since I got taken away three nights ago, and they were finally here.
"Zane, what are you doing here?"
"Here, I'll take you away," he said, helping me sit up. I then notice that there is another figure in the room, and he was already supporting Michael up. "Here to take you both away," he added, and as quietly as we could, we moved through the hospital until we were in a minivan.
"Thank you, but if you can send a message, I would be..."
"Are you okay?"
"Where is Lucien?" I ask because no matter what, I could not bring myself to accept what Enoch had said. "Is it true that..."
"You do not have to worry about that now; I am taking you somewhere, and I will try to get you medical help," he said, and I still want to ask about Lucien. "Don't you trust him?"
"I do," I say, nodding rapidly.
"Tomorrow," he began, as if it were something ominous. "There would be an article spotlighting Yvette's crimes," he adds.
"What?" Michael's question does not sound as excited as I thought it would have been, and that reaffirmed that he had really forgiven her already. "How can you do something like that? Is it okay for you to do this to your mom?"
"Mom?" I mutter as if this were the first time I was hearing such a word.
"She is more of a stranger to me," Zane spat without any form of remorse. "She can get sympathy in jail if she wants, but otherwise she would be the first one to go down," Znae said to the driver, and without a word, the driver began going. All through the day, Michaell kept on protesting how he was not going to join us if we decided to do something like this to our mom. It only made me wonder what Yvette had said to him to make him this way.
"By the way, Zane?" I ask as I lean into the chair with my eyes closed. "How did you find me?"
"Hard work," he said, and for a moment, I hoped that Yvette had put in effort to try and save me, but she was still as cold as ever, and whatever was coming to her was what she deserved.
When we got to the house, there were military men guarding the place. They litter the ground as though it were their camp. "Where is this?"
"A new house that Luxien just purchased so you can be safe," he said as he helped me down from the car and into the house. "Stay here until everything is settled, and he will come for you."
"Xam, do I at least hear from him?"
"It might compromise him," Zane said with a headache. I wanted to understand, but it was getting too hard to understand. "He is under the watchful eyes of everyone, and one mistake might cause everything we have worked on the past four days to be wasted."
"Okay," I say, knowing it was just going to be a few more days.
"This way, the doctor is waiting."
