Chapter 19 Secrets Exposed
"Stop." Eva's voice cracked. "Just... stop."
Silence.
"I'm sorry," Daniel said softly. "I'm so sorry, Eva. I wanted you to hear it from me before you saw it online."
Eva squeezed her eyes shut, trying not to cry as sadness began to overwhelm her.
Seven years.
For seven years, she had tried to forget that night. Still, pictures flashed in her mind of the strong smell of disinfectant in the hotel room, the feeling of her own hands trembling, the fuzzy edges of voices that all blended together. She kept it buried in her memory, locked away by shame and silence.
Now, someone had broken through those walls.
Someone had exposed her most vulnerable and shameful moment to everyone.
"Do you know who posted it?" she whispered.
"We don't know yet. The account was anonymous. But Eva..." Daniel's voice hardened. "I have a pretty good idea who's behind this."
Eva didn't need to ask.
She already knew.
Reena.
The betrayal stung more sharply because there had been a time when Reena was her closest friend.
But that friendship had shattered after Reena blamed Eva for the fallout that night, claiming Eva ruined everything Reena cared about.
Eva had always dreaded what Reena might do if she found a way to get revenge.
Now it seemed that day had come.
Eva hung up the phone and stood frozen in the hallway.
Her mind raced as grief and panic grew with every thought, each one making her feel like she might fall apart.
The video was out there. Millions could see it. Millions could judge her and hurt her with their cruel words.
What was left of her reputation was about to be destroyed.
And her children...
God, her children.
What would happen when her children grew older? How would they face friends and classmates once they learned about the video and rumors followed them through school and life?
Eva had worked so hard to protect them from the truth about their birth. Now, with one video and the scandal, that protection was gone.
"Eva."
She looked up.
Adrian stood at the end of the hallway, his face tense with worry.
"What happened?"
Eva tried to speak, but fear stopped her. Only a broken sob escaped into the silence between them.
"Hey. Hey." He took her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing away the tears that had started to fall. "Talk to me. What's wrong?"
"The video," Eva choked out. "From that night. Someone posted it online."
Adrian went still.
"What?"
"Everyone can see it. Everyone knows." Her panic rose as her words spilled out faster. "My children—Adrian, my children are going to see it someday. They're going to know their mother was—"
"Stop." Adrian's voice was firm but gentle. "Stop. Look at me."
Eva forced herself to meet his eyes.
"This is not your fault," he said quietly. "You were drugged. What happened that night was not your choice."
"It doesn't matter." Eva shook her head. "People won't care about the truth. They'll see the video and judge me. People will call me names. My children will be called names." The words came out sharp with helplessness.
She pictured her children’s wide, confused eyes.
How could she protect them from everything: the whispers behind their backs when they went out, their friends turning away from them, and their teachers looking at them with pity?
Would they be left out for something they didn’t do?
Her chest tightened as she pictured their innocent faces hurt by a shame that did not belong to them.
A wave of anger, hot and wild, rose in her throat. She was angry at the people who wanted to hurt her children, and at herself for letting the past catch up to them.
Eva’s mind raced. From now on, she couldn't protect them from mean rumors or from people staring and asking questions.
What would they think of her? Of themselves?
How could she explain pain she didn’t even know how to describe?
The fear washed through her, leaving her empty.
All she ever wanted was to give her children a safe, steady world. Now that world was slipping away, and she felt powerless to stop it.
"No." Adrian's grip on her face tightened slightly. "I won't let that happen."
"How will you stop it? The video is already out there. You can't undo what people have already seen."
"Trust me. I won’t let anything happen to you. I mean what I say. Just watch me."
The look in his eyes sent a shiver down Eva's spine.
"Adrian—"
You may not know this, but I have my ways. I built a huge business, Eva. I have a great team that handles online safety, and I know the right people. I have resources you can't even imagine." His jaw clenched.
"Give me an hour, and in that time, that video will be erased from every platform. Every repost, every share, every copy will be gone. And whoever uploaded it will face consequences they never saw coming."
Eva stared at him, her heart pounding.
"You can do that?"
"I can do a lot of things." Adrian's expression softened as he looked at her. "Especially when it comes to protecting you."
A fresh wave of tears spilled down Eva's cheeks, but this time, they weren’t tears of despair.
They were tears of relief.
"Why?" she whispered. "Why do you care so much?"
Adrian was silent for a long moment.
Then, slowly, he leaned forward and pressed his forehead against hers.
"Because I should have protected you seven years ago," he murmured. "And I failed. I will not fail again."
They stood together, foreheads touching, breathing quietly as the rest of the world faded away.
And for the first time in seven years, Eva let herself believe that maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.
Yet beneath her small hope, a faint chill stayed with her. She could not shake the feeling that some problems would not go away so easily, and that what happened tonight might bring trouble she could not yet see.
