Chapter 154: Into the Future
The Children of the main cast
The gala gleamed with luxury. Chandeliers emit a warm golden glow throughout the room, reflecting off the crystal goblets and shiny marble floors. It was a festivity of victory, not only for Ashlyn Bennett but for a legacy revived. The tables were filled with the elite of the business world. Conversations hummed with curiosity, admiration, and whispers of awe over the events of the International Business Summit. The Ashlyn Bennett Foundation's launch was the talk of the night, and at the center of it all stood Ashlyn herself, poised but undeniably powerful.
Richard Knight rested against the bar's edge, swirling his drink. His gaze remained fixed on Ashlyn, who was engaged in a conversation with a distinguished man dressed in a pinstriped suit.
"She's something, isn't she?" Steven White remarked, sidling up beside him. His voice carried a mix of pride and regret.
Richard smirked. "Something? She's everything. Hard to believe she pulled all of this off in one lifetime."
Steven chuckled, though it was tinged with melancholy. "She reminds me of her mother. Headstrong, fearless. I should've seen it sooner... should've done more."
Richard shifted his gaze to Steven, his tone sharpening. "You're doing something now. That counts for something."
Steven nodded, but his shoulders sagged. "I'll spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to her. She deserved more than what my family took from her."
Across the room, Ashlyn excused herself from the conversation and made her way toward them, her emerald green gown trailing behind her like liquid silk. She caught Richard's eye, her lips curving into a soft smile.
"Talking about me, gentlemen?" she teased as she approached.
"Only good things," Steven said, stepping aside to let her stand closer to Richard. "You know, it's rare to see someone turn pain into purpose the way you have. I'm proud of you, Ashlyn."
Her smile faltered for a moment, emotion flickering across her face. "Thank you, Steven. That means more than you know."
Steven hesitated, then said, "I'll give you two a moment," and walked away, leaving her alone with Richard.
Richard's eyes roamed over her, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "You're stealing the show, Mrs. Knight."
"Mrs. Knight?" she echoed, raising an eyebrow. "I thought I was just your business partner."
"Business partner, wife... legend in the making," he said, stepping closer. "You've got a lot of titles now."
She rolled her eyes, though her smirk betrayed her amusement. "You're not so bad yourself, Mr. Knight. Though I think I'm the one doing all the heavy lifting tonight."
"I'm fine with that. You look better in the spotlight anyway," he said, his tone softening. "Ashlyn, you've done something incredible here. You've turned revenge into something... meaningful."
Her expression grew serious. "It was never just about revenge, Richard. I wanted justice. Not just for me, but for my mother. For everyone the Whites hurt. This foundation-it's my way of making sure no one else has to go through what I did."
Richard studied her, his admiration clear. "You know, when I first met you, I thought you were dangerous."
"I am dangerous," she said with a sly grin.
"True," he admitted, chuckling. "But I didn't realize how much heart you had. You've surprised me at every turn, Ashlyn."
She tilted her head, her gaze softening. "You've surprised me too, Richard. I didn't think I'd ever trust someone again, let alone... love them."
He froze for a moment, her words sinking in. Then he reached for her hand, his fingers brushing against hers. "You're not just the woman I married out of convenience, Ashlyn. You're the woman I'd marry a hundred times over, in every lifetime."
She blinked, surprised by the strength of his voice. "That's quite a statement, Mr. Knight."
He inclined closer, his voice becoming a whisper. "It is not a statement." "It's a commitment."
Before she had a chance to reply, the noise of a spoon striking a glass resonated throughout the room. Everyone's attention was focused on Ashlyn while Steven White was at the podium.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Steven commenced, his voice resolute even with the gravity of the occasion. "We appreciate you being here this evening to commemorate the opening of the Ashlyn Bennett Foundation." I won't take up much of your time-I understand you're all excited to listen to the woman of the moment. "Before I pass the stage to her, I'd like to say a few words."
He stopped, gazing straight at Ashlyn. "Ashlyn, I've made so many mistakes that I can't even number them." I let your mother down when she needed me the most, and I've let you down for entirely too long. Yet this evening, I desire the world to understand how proud I am to refer to you as my granddaughter. You represent the future of the White family heritage-not one founded on deceit and avarice, but one rooted in strength, integrity, and kindness."
The audience burst into applause. Ashlyn's eyes sparkled with uncried tears as she approached the stage. She halted at the podium, inhaling deeply before she began to speak.
"Thank you, Steven," she started, her voice firm even with the feelings in her eyes. "And I appreciate everyone present this evening." This foundation isn't solely focused on my narrative-it's about all the narratives we can transform as we move ahead.
The room was quiet, attentive to each word she spoke.
"My mother showed me that true strength isn't solely about combat-it's also about advocating for what is right, even when faced with challenges." And that is what this organization will accomplish. We will stand up for those who are unable to stand up for themselves. We will defend the truth. "And we'll demonstrate that even in the most bleak times, there's always a path ahead."
She hesitated, her tone becoming gentler. "I wouldn't be present this evening if it weren't for those who had faith in me." Steven, for ultimately recognizing me for who I truly am. Richard, for supporting me even when I was difficult. "And to each of you, for being a part of this adventure."
She lifted her glass. "Cheers to fairness." Cheers to redemption. "And here's to creating a legacy that brings us all pride."
The audience burst into applause as she descended from the podium. Richard stood at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for her.
"You were amazing," he remarked, his tone soft yet brimming with pride.
She grinned, interlacing her fingers with his. "We were amazing." "I wouldn't have accomplished this without your help."
He bent closer, his lips lightly touching her ear. "You could have accomplished everything by yourself." "However, I'm pleased that you didn't need to."
After the applause dwindled, they remained next to each other, grasping hands, ready to face whatever was to come. United, they created an indomitable power-a fusion of affection, salvation, and steadfast resilience.
