Chapter 81 081
Adrian's POV.
“No one really knows him” The guy named Hartley started, his voice low, sounding like he was drained of energy.
His face was glued to the floor, looking like he was trying to recall every detail from the back of his head.
I stood still silently beside Evelyn, hands in my pocket, eyes fixed on him.
“Everyone who works for him calls him M.” He continued. “That is the name we all know and it is the only relevant information we have about him”
I kept silent, not saying a word but only listening. I knew he wasn't done, he still had more to say.
“He mentioned that he's 26 years old. And that he's got a lot of things on you” Hartley brought his face to look at me. “That's all”
I took in a deep breath, my back getting straightened by itself. “How does he contact you?”
“Through a discord system” Hartley replied immediately. “His username is @Mavi”
Thoughts went around in my head for a moment. I tried to recall if the name is of any familiarity to me but nothing came, I didn't know anyone by the name Mavi.
My face was still on Hartley and I could see his face widened, like he had just remembered something. It made my face crease.
“Now I remember,” Hartley exclaimed. “He uses Google meet too”
“Google meet?” Evelyn asked for confirmation and he nodded.
“Once or twice, he used a video call connect and I joined. He was showing the scenery and there were signs of where he was, but I didn't know where that is”
My eyes squinted. That could be a way of getting to him. “How do I get the Google meet link?”
“You can't,” he said quickly. “He has to verify the people in the meeting room himself, you can only use a verified one”
I turned to David who understood what I needed before I asked. He went over to a table and picked Hartley's phone up, bringing it to me without delay.
I turned the phone to the guy on the floor and he opened it immediately.
Before anything else, I removed the lock, then went over to his Google meet app. I saw the meeting room he was talking about. Mavi. The name rings no bell and it was only making my curiosity grow.
Who was he? Where had I known him? How did he find out about me? Does he hold a grudge? Or was this a game he just decided to use me as a player?
I checked his discord, seeing the chats between them. Mavi was a man of short words. From the chats, he was rude and arrogant, thinking he's got everyone wrapped around his fingers.
I scoffed, eyes still on the phone screen. “I see he is one to order people around” I muttered.
Hartley laughed. “You wouldn't know how it feels for people like us, would you?”
His words made me lift my face to look at him.
“When he tells us to do anything, we do it without delay. He's paying us so fucking much for the little jobs we do and you think we are one to complain?”
“Little jobs?” Evelyn chuckled. “Those are little crimes not jobs”
“Whatever it is” he glared at her. “The payment from those little crimes are what we survive on”
I didn't say a word. He turned to me, his face already darkened.
“I kept to my end of this deal, now you have to keep your promise” he said. “Protect my family like you have said”
“David will get the information on your family when I'm gone” I said. “I'll keep my promise and protect them”
“That's enough show for today” I turned to Evelyn. “Let's return back into the house”
I turned and had only taken a step when Hartley's voice rose again.
“What about me?” He asked.
I turned back to face him. “You attempted murder. I will have to throw you into prison”
Evelyn walked ahead of me and I walked after her. Hartley was silent until we got to the entrance but his voice which rose again made me halt once more.
“He'll send someone else,” he said. “If he's in New York, he might come himself” I didn't quite understand him.
I turned to him, my squinted gaze telling him he needed to explain.
“Once that guy behind everything learns that I'm in prison, he will be curious,” Hartley continued. “What did he tell them? What was he able to find out about me? Why is his family being protected by Adrian Kane? He will want to know”
“What exactly are you driving at?” Evelyn asked impatiently. I didn't want to drag her into this but she's already too deep into it. It started with her and she's already known too much.
“He'll come to the prison. To either confirm I didn't tell you anything or to get rid of me so I don't spill anything” he said.
He was right. That was bound to happen. Whoever that guy is, he isn't a god. He'll be curious, restless. He'll want to know if his plans are still going according to how he wants it.
“That doesn't mean I won't put you in prison. I'll stay updated on everything that happens” I told him. “If he really comes to see you, I'll find out”
I turned again and walked out with Evelyn. Once outside, I stood in front of her and that got her startled.
“What's it?” She asked.
“Stop here” I said, voice dark and hoarse.
Her face squinted. “Stop what?”
“Stop trying to follow me around and snooping in on what I do” I said. Without any other word, I led the way back to the mansion.
Halfway back into the house, my phone rang silently with a vibrating sound.
I stopped on my tracks and checked the caller ID. It was Dennis.
“Go ahead, I have to pick this call” I said to Evelyn before swiping the green button.
“Why the fucking hell haven't you picked up since the first time I called?” Dennis yelled, his loud voice making me take the phone off my ear for a moment.
“The woman called again! She can't get through to you!” He groaned in frustration.
“I blocked her,” I said. “I will call her when I'm ready to talk to her”
I ended the call before Dennis could reply. Once the call ended, another call popped in almost immediately.
I sighed deeply and picked up. “Until when were you going to ignore me?” An old feminine voice said.
Goddamnit. She called with another number. The woman I had just talked about with Dennis.
