Chapter 80 Detective Evelyn
Evelyn's POV.
I walked in slowly, obeying his words. Adrian turned and the look on his face got me shivering.
“I was taking a walk and…..” I stuttered.
“You followed me. I know that much,” he said. I must have forgotten for a moment that Adrian Kane wasn't stupid, he's a goddamn smart man.
I entered the room fully, realizing there were other guards standing like statues.
I didn't reply to Adrian's words, I only swallowed hard. He took his face away from me, crouching down in front of the guy.
“Tell me the truth, who's this man?” Adrian asked. “How do I contact him?”
“I told you to just kill me!” The guy yelled, getting me startled. He was getting driven to an edge, getting panicked and restless as minutes passed by.
Only heaven knows how long that had been going on.
“Then, I'll just kill you,” Adrian gritted. It showed on his face that he was tired of getting no answers to the question he asked. “I'll give you the death you wish for."
Adrian grabbed a bat iron pole, twirling it in his hand. I watched the guy on the floor laugh, but the crack beneath that laugh was evident.
He was scared. He didn't want to die. His throat bobbled, his hand slightly shaking. And all these? Adrian and the guards failed to see them.
“Escort Evelyn out,” he said to David before turning back to the guy.
“You shouldn't watch blood spill, I want you to have a good sleep tonight." He didn't turn to me but those words were for me.
I would have laughed if the situation was funny. He really wasn't going to smash that thing on him, was he? There's no way Adrian Kane could be a murderer.
David wasted no time in moving over to me, gesturing for me to leave the room.
When I didn't pay any attention to him, he grabbed me gently by the shoulder, wanting to shove me outside.
I yanked my hand away from him and rushed back to where Adrian was standing.
“Wait, let me handle this,” I said. Adrian looked at me like I had gone insane.
He closed his eyes, breathing out loud. A way of telling me I was starting to become a source of frustration to him.
“Just get back to your room, Evelyn. I don't want you meddling with this.” His voice was dark, his face enough to make me withdraw but it was not working on me, not this time.
“I'm serious. Let me handle this, just for a moment.” The look on my face turned to desperation.
Adrian's gaze lingered on me for a while before he moved away, shifting to the side.
I faced David. “What's his name?” I referred to the guy captured and sitting helplessly on the ground.
“Hartley,” David said, his voice low. They all stared, curious about what I was going to do.
I stood in front of Hartley who lifted his weak face to look at me, a smirk curling up his lips.
I said nothing. I only gave him time to show his reactions. He laughed, getting his head thrown back for a while.
When he was done, every form of a smile disappeared from his face, the face darkening.
“He wanted you dead but you are still so lucky to survive all of his attacks,” he said.
“I failed to kill you,” he continued. “And even the fire attack failed to kill you?” he scoffed in disbelief.
David walked aggressively over to him but before he could walk past me, I held his hand.
I didn't move my face away from Hartley as I talked to David. “Let him be. I don't want anyone to intervene.”
“I see you failed to kill me,” I started, intentionally wanting to hurt his ego. I laughed.
“You were just not good enough,” I continued. “Not fit for the job you had been given.”
“You didn't stab the right place, actually,” I said. I raised my top up, showing him the stab wound.
That night, I had turned to the side just a little bit in the darkness, not knowing someone was going to stab me. If I hadn't turned slightly, then he would have gotten the right spot, stabbing me to death.
His jaws clenched as he stared back at me, and the defeated look on his face made me smirk.
“You have something to protect,” I blurted. “I don't know what it is but it seems to be important.”
Slowly, I crouched down in front of him and he lowered his face to look at me.
“That man you are protecting is not worth it. Only the things you are protecting are,” I said.
His jaws clenched again. “Not things. They are people.”
My eyes brightened, seeing that he was slowly starting to open up.
I didn't give him the expression that shows I was delighted.
“He's threatening you with your people?” I asked. “And you are foolish enough to believe he won't harm them even if you don't talk?”
“If I talk about him, he'll kill my family! So stop spewing rubbish!” He snapped.
Family. Those people he's talking about are his family.
“I'll protect your family, however I can't guarantee protecting you. So, tell me,” Adrian cut in.
Hartley looked at him for seconds and said nothing. I could tell he was thinking about Adrian's offer, whether it's the truth or not.
“Before you were made to do the job. You would have heard about Adrian Kane,” I chirped in. “My husband keeps his words.”
I wasn't sure about that but I still vouched for him anyway.
Hartley's face darted between Adrian and I. Then finally he spoke. “I'll tell you everything I know.”
My eyes brightened, delight taking over my whole face.
“Impossible” I heard one of the guards mutter. “He didn't talk for days but she was able to make him talk?” He muttered.
I stood up, my lips curled into a smirk. It wasn't the first time I'd be hearing it; being called a detective.
