Chapter 7 New Identity - Mrs. Kane
Evelyn’s POV.
We stared at each other for a long time before the sound of footsteps brought us back to reality.
The cook was passing by, and she bowed her head slightly, trying to walk past us, when Adrian stopped her.
“Take Mrs. Kane to her room,” he ordered.
Mrs. Kane. That name made reality crash down on me even harder. I was married! To this devil himself. A cunning snake in a man's clothing.
Mira led me to my room and left after watching me go in. I slammed the door shut, fuming in anger.
I stood in front of the mirror, my eyes fixed on the necklace he had placed on my neck.
I wanted to dare him, to defy him and take the necklace off, but the thought of my family getting hurt because of me, especially Eva, made me stick to his instructions.
He was right. I love them and hate to see them get hurt.
I tried to get my clothes off, but the corset refused to budge, no matter how much I tried.
Soon, I got tired of trying and called Mira using the landline.
“Please come to my room,” I instructed.
I dropped the phone and turned back to the mirror.
Then…
A cold palm brushed my hair forward.
I froze.
That scent… it was familiar.
Before I could react, fingers worked at the back of my corset silently. The knot loosened.
The person didn’t say a word. Just stepped back as though they’d never been there in the first place.
I spun around.
Adrian.
What the hell was wrong with this man?
A few seconds later, Mira walked in, took one look at me, and finished pulling the corset completely off.
“Thank you,” I said. She bowed slightly in response and moved towards the door.
Standing beside the doorframe, she stopped again and turned to me.
“Please sleep early and get enough sleep. Tomorrow, we shall begin your public appearance training,” she said.
That sounded heavier than it should because I was just starting to accept this new reality.
But I couldn't complain. Adrian Kane made it obvious that I had no options.
The next morning, the sound of my phone ringing woke me up.
I squinted my eyes open, the sunlight seeping in through the window forced me to move.
I picked up the phone and checked with my eyes half-opened. It was Dad.
It was 8 am, and I slept longer than expected.
I picked up the call, his voice ringing out from the other end of the phone.
“The debt had been cleared,” He said first, with so much excitement.
My face lit up with relief as I dragged in a deep breath. “I'm glad.”
“Yes. Everything has been settled now,” he continued.
“You saved us, Evelyn,” he added.
I let out a small smile. “I'm glad I could help.”
“Now all that's left for you to do is do what I had asked of you,” he said, and my smile faded
I really hoped I wouldn't have to wake up to his call every day only to get the reminder that I'm to spy on Adrian Kane.
“I get it, Dad,” I said. “Regards to Mom and Eva”
I ended the call before he could respond.
With a groan, I returned the phone to the nightstand and lay back on the bed, using the duvet to cover my whole body, including my face.
Not long after, a knock came on my door. I didn't respond and only groaned. I could already tell who it was, Mira.
When she knocked twice and didn't get a response, I heard the door creak open.
“Ms?” She called, but I gave no response, only groaned silently to myself.
I really wanted to sleep for a little longer, no matter how short it would be.
She tapped me, but I still didn't respond. Then she dragged the duvet off my body, making my eyes flutter open.
“Looks like you are awake already, ma’am,” she said with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Please get ready for breakfast and your training,” she said.
“Can I skip those things for today?” I asked.
Again, she showed me that fake smile of hers. “No,” her reply was savage, smooth, and sharp.
I dragged in a deep breath and stood from the bed. “I'll be down in a few minutes.”
She bowed slightly and exited the room.
I didn't sign up for this. I didn’t sign up for waking up three hours earlier than the time I used to back home.
I didn't sign up for trainings my mother never bothered to teach me because they weren't really necessary.
Our family owned a fashion brand, and we are rich, but it never required us to show up for interviews and red carpets.
I took a bath and went to the dining room. The meal had already been served, different varieties of food filling the table like a feast was being held.
I settled down on the dining chair but didn't start eating. I was waiting for Adrian because I believed we still had a lot to talk about, and we could do that while we ate.
Soon after, he descended the stairs. He looked at me, and he walked past me, a hand in his pocket.
“Never wait for me before you eat. I eat meals alone,” he said, his voice dark and icy.
I scoffed to myself, watching his back as he disappeared into the corner where the liquor cabinet was.
“I wasn't waiting for you because I wanted to bond over breakfast. I was only being nice,” I said.
“Prick!” I muttered under my breath.
My voice was loud, and the words were clear. I'm sure he heard them, but just decided not to give a response.
My gaze went back to the meal, but I had lost my appetite because of the sickening face I just saw.
“Clear the table, I'm done,” I instructed the cook.
