Chapter 46 Gold-digger
Evelyn's Pov
Every word of his kept making my heart thump louder.
My father collapsing was the reason why we stepped into the hospital for treatment and because of that, Adrian was destroying a life.
“Sue the hospital. They need to defend the stupid guidelines they made.” Immediately Adrian was done speaking, he ended the call.
The doctor's voice quickly rose the moment Adrian was done with the call.
“Please forgive me. Please don't take my license,” he pleaded. “Don't ruin my life please”
I didn't know why tears found its way to my eyes but thoughts suddenly clouded my mind.
Thoughts about how a man could suddenly become helpless and powerless in just minutes. How a man could be reduced to nothing because he has no power.
“Adrian,” I called gently. He turned, his face calm yet dangerous.
“Let him be,” I said. “Take those words back.”
“As he has said, the hospital laid the guidelines,” I continued. “Take it out only on the hospital and let him be.”
Adrian came to me and smirked. “And do you think you can control me?” He said.
I couldn't help but think he's being petty, trying to get back at me for what I had said after meeting with Nicholas.
“This is a man's life we are dealing with here, Adrian!” I snapped. “And my father is the one who was delayed treatment, not your goddamn family.”
I wanted my words to hurt him but surprise cladded my face when Adrian's smirk only grew wider.
“Do you think I am doing this for you?” he laughed. “No. Everyone deserves to be treated equally when it comes to health.”
I scoffed.
“Don't lecture on that, you are worse than he is!” I snapped.
My anger was beginning to get out of control.
“He worked for years to get to where he is,” I pointed at the man still kneeling. “And you want to take everything from him in just a day? In just a few minutes?”
I was getting worked up but Adrian simply ignored me like I was nothing. He faced David. “Escort him out.”
David dragged the man away out of our sight without hesitation.
“I hate you!” I spat at him.
I hate that I couldn't stop him from taking the man's license and job.
Adrian stepped closer, his frame towering over me in an intimidating way.
“You don't need to like me,” he whispered. “You only need to live as my wife, by my rules.”
I folded my fists, glaring at him with eyes burning with anger. The moment I snapped my face away from him, I stormed into the emergency ward.
My legs buckled when I saw my father looking lifeless on the hospital bed, unconscious with an oxygen mask placed above his head.
Mom was crying and Eva was beside, consoling her.
ADRIAN'S POV
I walked into the ward after Evelyn. She was shocked to see her father in that state and her mother crying uncontrollably.
“The test results are not out. There's no diagnosis yet,” I told her.
She kept her eyes fixed on her father and didn't respond. Minutes later, she walked to her mother, consoling her alongside her sister.
I rested my back on the wall, arms crossed over my chest, silently observing everything.
Minutes later, another doctor arrived. He looked to be in his late forties, two younger doctors trailing behind him like shadows. He gave a slight bow before stepping forward to examine the man on the bed.
He skimmed through the hospital report before he spoke. “He's stable now and just needs rest.”
““There’s nothing critically wrong. It was just a severe spike in his blood pressure.”
“He had a hypertensive crisis due to a lot of stress.”
Evelyn breathed out in relief. “How serious is it?”
“He needs to have a lot of rest and eat meals based on my prescription,” the doctor walked towards the door. “Then his condition will slowly improve.” He bowed, walking out without another word.
I tucked my hands in my pocket and walked to Evelyn. Leaning in closer to her, I whispered. “He's not dying, so stop looking like a ghost.”
“Let's talk outside," I leaned back and said.
I walked outside, turning swiftly. She followed behind me as expected.
Outside, she looked at me with an expressionless face. “I heard about my in-law collapsing so I thought I'd be a gentleman and show up here like I care.”
“I'll return to the company, you should be back home before I return,” I continued. “Get your schedule from Mira, your father being sick doesn't stop you from doing what you are expected to do as my wife.”
She scoffed, looking into my eyes without saying a word, her eyes filled with venom. She simply nodded and stormed back into the ward, slamming the door hard.
Strangely, I liked the look in her eyes, the fire that looked like it'd do anything to burn me and I'd love to see her try.
I walked into the lobby and noticed a few people looking my way, whispering quietly. News about the doctor who might lose his license had clearly made its rounds.
The hospital would be called in for explanations. If they can't justify the guidelines they made, it puts them at the risk of getting closed down, and every employee at the risk of losing their jobs.
The drive from Geracio back to my company took only a few minutes.
I stopped at the restroom before heading to my office. I walked out of the men's restroom but the voices coming from the ladies room made me stop in my steps.
“The CEO's wife got married to him because of his money, I told you!” A lady said.
“She's a gold digger! She only wants to multiply her family riches” another responded. “Such a despicable woman."
I walked closer to the women's restroom. It was a lack of etiquette to barge into the women’s restroom but I gave no damn care at the moment.
“We should tell everyone. She needs to be put in her place so she can stop acting like the boss whenever she comes here,” they continued.
The two ladies stood in front of the wash basin space. They stared into the mirror, retouching their makeup.
It took them a while to notice my presence. When they eventually turned, they gasped in horror.
“Mr…. Mr. Kane.”
