Chapter 37 Middle Class Dinner
Evelyn's POV.
I admired myself in front of the mirror after getting dressed for the lunch date.
“Are you ready, ma’am?” Mira asked.
She had left the room earlier after doing my hair and had just returned. I gave a response but didn't look away from the mirror.
“Find me a black handbag in my collection. I want an Hermes.”
“Ok ma'am,” she bowed slightly.
Mira handed the bag to me minutes later while I fixed my makeup in front of the mirror. I flashed her a smile in appreciation.
“One more thing, ma'am,” she moved around to where I kept my accessories and returned with sunglasses.
“You should use this.” she said. “It works well when it comes to impressing the public.”
Again, I smiled at her. I wasn't wrong when I said she knew everything.
Mira led the way out of the room, and immediately I picked up my phone. It beeped.
There was a message from an unknown number and it made me stop in my tracks, my forehead creasing.
I stared at the number for a while before deciding to view the message.
“Encore D'Aglio,” the first message read and it was followed by another. “4pm tomorrow.”
There wasn't a clear indication of who the message was from but I knew it was Nathaniel. He was the only one who I had agreed to meet.
I turned away from the phone and quietly followed behind Mira.
In the hallway, Dera was passing by and our eyes locked. I paused and let Mira walk away before I spoke to Dera.
“Adrian won't be home this afternoon. Please use that opportunity wisely,” I said.
She bowed. “Understood ma’am.”
I walked downstairs, catching up with Mira who stood by the door and directed me to the lot where Adrian was waiting.
“Have a nice lunch time, ma'am,” she bowed.
“Thank you.”
In the parking lot, Adrian was leaning on the car, dressed in an expensive looking black tuxedo.
He scrutinized my whole appearance as I approached and when I got to him, he removed his arm from the car.
“You are dressed well,” he said. “Now, you have to show how lovely we are in front of cameras.”
“I'll try my best,” I responded.
I wanted to walk inside the car but Adrian's strong hands grabbed me, pinning me to the car.
“I don't need you to try your best, Evelyn,” his voice was dark and his expression suddenly changed.
“You will do this perfectly.”
For heaven's sake! I couldn't guarantee how well I was going to behave at the lunch venue but I had just told him I would try my best!
“Do you understand?” He asked, raising a brow.
I knew that if I wanted us to leave here and if I wanted him to stop scaring and frustrating me, then being defiant was useless.
“Yes, I understand,” I said, my voice low, almost a whisper.
He opened the car door, his eyes ordering me inside. I got in and he followed, taking the seat beside me.
No one spoke, not even the driver, who seemed like a new recruit.
When the car stopped in front of a restaurant, I blinked my eyes.
“We will have lunch here?” I asked slowly, as my eyes scanned the environment.
My eyes were fixed on the nametag of the restaurant, placed above the building.
I could see the insides of the restaurant from outside and that got me more surprised. The restaurant wasn't bad, from what I'd seen inside, I could tell it was a middle class restaurant where the normal residents of the city eat.
But normal doesn't include people like Adrian Kane.
Eating here didn’t sound bad, but I’d never imagined Adrian Kane dining in a middle class restaurant.
He couldn’t even eat with me at home, yet here he was, willing to eat with me in public, under everyone’s gaze.
Adrian noticed I looked lost in thought and he called my attention. “Is anything the problem?”
“I thought you'd reserve the whole place?” I asked.
I still wasn't looking at him, I didn't want to because I knew we could communicate without looking at each other.
Adrian chuckled amusingly and that forced me to turn my face to him, my whole face was clouded with confusion.
“You don't think we are out here for lunch because I want to spend quality time with you right?” His face twisted in disgust.
I also rolled my eyes. What the hell was he talking about?
“Of course I know that's not the case,” I spat with venom in my voice. “It's to kill the rumors.”
He was looking at me calmly and he blinked once before he tilted his head. “So? How are we supposed to do that?”
“Get a VIP hotel room and eat in silence with no one present?”
“Can't we do that?” I asked.
If it was to kill the rumors then I was expecting us to have a private lunch with a cameraman around to take the lovely records they need.
Adrian shook his head. He didn't groan but it was clear on his face that he was tired of me.
“Use your brain, sweetheart,” he said. He got out of the car and moved to my side of the car, getting the door opened for me.
“The main theme of this lunch? The people in there.” He wasn't pointing but I understood. “
Their cameras and secret whispers are enough to break a million rumors about us.”
“So, let the show begin.”
