Chapter 36 The life I signed up for
Evelyn's POV.
I decided to overlook his sickening voice and turned to him. “And how do we shut them up?”
“We’re going on a lunch date,” he said. “We should show them how lovely we are.”
He grabbed a bottle of water and disappeared from my side immediately.
Mira was already awake, standing with her head slightly bowed and her hands folded in front of her.
“Good morning, ma'am,” she said. “Please head to the gym room for your morning routine.”
I took a deep breath but didn't complain. She led the way and I followed behind her.
I stopped at the door after looking into the gym room before entering. It wasn't empty today. Adrian was inside, carrying weights.
I looked away and moved over to where I'd have the training with Mira.
“Lie on your back,” Mira instructed politely. I did as she said, lying on my back with my hands beneath my head.
She made me do crunches for a few minutes with my legs folded and my head lifted, letting my arms touch my knees. It was fucking difficult but I was able to handle it.
I kept my eyes on Adrian as he worked through his dips. The way his shoulders tightened, then released, pulled my focus from the ache in my stomach. I counted his movements without meaning to.
I was forced to look away when he stopped. He grabbed the bottle of water from near his feet and didn't even dash his eyes in my direction before he left the room.
The workout lasted for an hour. After the timer went off, I headed to my room to take a quick bath.
After my bath, I went downstairs and sat at the dining table. The meal was already set, just two slices of bread and a cup of tea. As Mira passed by, I called out to her.
“You called for me, ma'am?” She bowed slightly.
“Add cheese and chicken soup to my breakfast, please,” I smiled.
I hadn't eaten dinner the night before and after the party yesterday, I woke up hungry but decided not to make it obvious.
I knew the two slices of bread here wouldn't do justice to what I felt.
“Bread and tea is what we have on the menu today, ma'am,” she said, her tone polite and a smile on her face.
I let out a loud breath, trying to calm my nerves. She wasn't going to add what I had asked for to the meal on the table. I was pretty sure of that.
“Then, add more slices of bread to my meal,” I leaned into the chair.
Mira's smile grew wider but I had a feeling she was going to say no.
“I'm sorry ma'am. I can't do that,” she said. “The boss had told me not to add any thing else to your breakfast as you need to be ready for lunch with him.”
I scoffed. They've got to be fucking kidding me.
I slammed my fists on the table and stood up, the chair making a scraping sound against the floor.
“You know what?” I breathed out. “I'm done here.”
I stormed up the stairs into my room but the moment I settled onto the bed, my stomach grumbled.
It went on for seconds and I held my stomach while I threw my head back with a groan.
I was doomed. The hunger had gotten to its peak but there was one thing I was sure about, I wasn't going back downstairs to eat that meal.
I decided to find something else to do while I waited for the time we would be going for lunch even though that was still so far away.
I checked through my phone but the only thing I could do was read the new articles that had just been added.
“Is Nathaniel Quinn really only her childhood friend?”
“Is she really in love with Adrian Kane or is it an arranged marriage?”
The whole internet talked about me and I hated such attention. I dragged in a deep breath and dropped my phone, laid on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
My life had never been this boring until I got to this mansion. The ringing sound of my phone startled me, prompting me to leave the bed.
I held the phone and stared at the caller ID for just two seconds before I picked up.
Eva's voice came from the other end, not so loud like the first time she had called.
“You promised to call back when the day was brighter,” she whined. “You didn't call back yet.”
“And this is just 9 a.m., Eva,” I chuckled slightly.
“I'm curious about what happened, I feel like I could die if I don't get to know how Nathaniel Quinn got there!” She said breathlessly. “You even got into a scandal with him!”
“I bet no one knows he's your boyfriend!” She said,
“Ex-boyfriend,” I corrected. “Our relationship ended after he left.”
“Right. I'm sorry,” she apologized, but I didn't think there was a reason to.
“Okay, I'll tell you all about it,” I said. I started narrating everything that happened to her.
We talked on the phone for so long that I didn't realize how much time had passed.
When I ended the call with her, I fell asleep. Later, the sound of a knock on my door woke me up.
Mira opened the door and walked in. “It's time to get you dressed for your public appearance lunch with Mr. Adrian.”
I threw my head to the other side and groaned. This was the life I’d been getting used to. I had no options but to get my ass up.
