Chapter 208 Chapter two hundred and eight
Lena's POV
Pain didn't return all at once. It seeped in through the edges of my consciousness, slow and heavy, like cold water filling a sunken room.
The first thing I registered was the sound—a steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... echoing somewhere above my head. Then came the smell of harsh antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, and the faint, sweet scent of fresh lilies sitting somewhere nearby.
My eyelids felt like lead. It took every ounce of strength I possessed just to part them, the oppressive darkness giving way to a blur of sterile white light. I blinked once.
Twice. The ceiling slowly drifted into focus, crisscrossed with acoustic tiles and pale fluorescent tubes dimmed for the evening.
A sharp intake of breath shattered the quiet.
"Sebastian..." my voice was barely a rasp, a dry papery sound that scraped against my throat.
Instantly, the warmth of a strong, broad palm wrapped tightly around my left hand.
"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm right here."
I turned my head slowly, fighting the dull ache in my neck. Sebastian was sitting in a low chair pulled right up against the edge of the mattress. He looked utterly wrecked.
Dark, bruised shadows were carved deep beneath his eyes, his stubble was thick and unkempt, and the immaculate lines of his usual presence were completely eroded by exhaustion.
He looked like he had aged ten years in a matter of days.
But as his dark eyes locked onto mine, a breath burst out of him—a sound of pure, shattered relief.
"Lena," he whispered, his voice cracking violently. He lifted my hand to his lips, pressing a hard, trembling kiss against my knuckles, holding it there as if I were the only anchor keeping him tethered to the earth.
From the corner of the room, a soft sob broke the silence.
I glanced past Sebastian's shoulder to see Avery pushing up from a cushioned armchair. Her eyes were red-rimmed and brimming with tears, a hand pressed tightly over her mouth as she smiled through her weeping.
"You're awake," Avery choked out, stepping forward to give my uninjured side a careful, agonizingly gentle squeeze. "You crazy girl, you finally woke up."
"How long...?" I rasped, my throat burning.
"Three days," Sebastian said softly, his thumb tracing delicate circles over the back of my hand. "You've been in the ICU for three days, Lena."
Memory came rushing back like a tidal wave—the blinding headlights, the screech of tearing metal, the terrifying spin of the car, and the overwhelming, instinctual terror that had seized my chest right before everything went dark.
My breath caught. A sudden, cold panic spiked through my veins, drowning out the physical pain.
I pulled my hand from Sebastian's grip and reached down frantically, pressing my palm over my lower abdomen.
My mind screamed with the memory of the impact, the sheer terror of losing the life we had barely begun to build. Tears flooded my eyes instantly.
"The... the baby..." I sobbed, my voice breaking into a panic-stricken gasp. "Sebastian, please—"
Sebastian immediately rose from his chair, leaning over the bed. Tears spilled over his own cheeks, but a soft, breathtaking smile broke across his exhausted face.
He gently placed his large, warm hand directly over mine, pressing it firmly against my stomach.
"Our baby is fine, Lena," he whispered, his voice rich with an aching tenderness that cut straight through my panic. "I swear to you. We checked. The doctors ran every scan. You both survived."
I let out a shuddering, breathless sob, the relief washing over me so violently that my entire body shook. I closed my eyes, covering my face with my free hand, breathing in the warmth of his palm against my belly. Our child was safe. Against all the horror, against the destruction Wes had unleashed upon our lives, the heart beating inside me hadn't stopped.
I took a long, shaky breath, letting the steady hum of the heart monitor anchor me before opening my eyes again. My chest tightened with a different kind of dread as the rest of the night returned to me in sharp, fragmented pieces.
"Where is Wes?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper as I searched Sebastian's face. "What happened to him?"
A heavy, solemn silence fell over the room.
Avery looked at Sebastian, then gave my shoulder one last gentle squeeze. "I'll go get the nurse and let them know you're awake," she murmured softly, stepping back toward the door to give the two of us privacy. "Take all the time you need."
She slipped out quietly into the hallway, pulling the heavy door shut behind her.
The ICU softened into the low, quiet amber glow of the night lamps, leaving only the soft hum of the monitors to fill the space between us.
I searched Sebastian's face, watching the heavy, suffocating shadow fall across his features. The unspoken answer was already written in the deep lines around his eyes, in the way his chest heaved with an agonizing breath.
"He's gone, Lena," Sebastian said, keeping his voice steady for my sake, though the words tasted like ash. "The police caught up to him three nights ago at the East Dock depot. He was cornered... he pointed a weapon at the tactical team. They fired."
My breath hitched. A profound sadness flickered across my chest. Despite everything he had put me through—despite the crash, the terror, the coma—I couldn't feel triumph. I didn't feel relief. I just felt deeply, heartbreakingly mournful for the tragedy of it all.
"Oh, Sebastian..." I whispered, tears shining in my eyes as I reached up to touch the side of his face. "I am so, so sorry. I’m sorry you had to witness that."
Sebastian closed his eyes, leaning his cheek into my warm palm, letting my touch anchor him as his shoulders shuddered.
"I spent twenty-six years raising him, Lena," he confessed, his voice dropping into a raw, bleeding whisper. "I loved him. I built my life around making sure he would have everything I had and more. And watching him turn into a monster... watching him pull that trigger on himself by proxy... it broke something inside me."
"It's okay to grieve him," I told him softly, my voice unyielding in its comfort as I smoothed my thumb over his cheekbone. "You're allowed to mourn the son you raised, even while you hate what he became."
He opened his eyes, looking down at me—at the strength in my gaze, at the home we were still standing in despite the storm that had tried to flatten us.
"He left so many scars," Sebastian admitted, his chest heaving with a quiet sigh. "He tried to destroy everything. He tried to take you from me. He tried to tear down the empire, the family... even the bloodline."
"He left scars," I agreed gently, weaving my fingers through his and pulling his hand back down to rest over our unborn child. "But he didn't win. He didn't take us, Sebastian."
I looked down at our joined hands resting over my stomach, then back up into his dark, tired eyes, offering him an unwavering promise.
"We're going to carry those scars," I said softly. "But we're going to heal. We have to... for them."
Sebastian looked down at our hands over my abdomen, the darkness of the last few days seeming to recede just a fraction, pushed back by the warmth of the life growing right beneath our fingertips.
He leaned down, pressing a lingering kiss to my forehead, holding me close as the quiet of the night wrapped around us.
"Together," he whispered against my skin. "We heal together."
