Chapter 26 Accident
Chapter 26 Accident
Our entire journey to the pit garage was filled with silence, I was still busy with my own thoughts that kept questioning what Chris's anger meant that he didn't really explain in detail to me.
"Hey, don't sulk like that all of a sudden. What's wrong with your head?"
I was getting impatient. Was he angry or was he just pretending? I couldn't indicate his attitude as a signal or anything, because he had an unpredictable attitude. Making things difficult for everyone, and in the end we were both confused.
"Oh, my... when she was so sane and pleasant last night, now I've been given another stupid surprise by her."
I grumbled resentfully, wanting so badly to pinch her and cuss her out in public, except that I was still sane and didn't want to be cussed back by Mrs Carla.
Not really, actually I wouldn't have been scolded if Mrs Carla knew about how childish her son was today.
Suddenly getting angry, not telling the reason clearly, and acting as if everything was someone else's fault.
Hey, I'm not a Legilimens, Mind Reader, or anything like that. How can I know what someone means if it's not explained to me.
I just grunted in annoyance, quickening my footsteps before everyone around the pit garage got busier before the first round of today's race was about to start.
I can see the engineers have also started to get busy with their respective roles. Monitors, Intercom Headsets, computers, mechanical equipment, and other items to help the drivers are all there. I could see that the pit crews were also on standby in their places, just a little signal away and they would be on the move, changing tyres and making any necessary repairs to the drivers' cars.
I hope this race will not be a disappointing result for the Mercodya team and especially for Chris. After the incident in the last race, Chris's fans still remember what happened to him.
The spin that almost led to a severe crash certainly made all parties related to Mercodya quite worried about Chris' performance in the future. In fact, what I know is that Chris was also contacted by the team and also the Mercodya Team Principal outside the briefing and training schedule.
I'm worried that Chris has something to hide, I'm always worried, but I haven't found a definitive solution yet. Instead, I'm just adding to the burden of my mind which is still making me lack concentration until now.
Yes, again I'm alluding to the fact that my mum and Chris's dad are on the same page. What a stupid coincidence that was. Luckily I was still able to control myself not to actually tell Chris about it.
I tried to forget about it slowly. Closeness doesn't necessarily mean something that I suspect, they could just be friends. And even if they were dating, he might not be my father.
I always instil that sentence to comfort myself and calm myself down.
The comforting words also melted together with other comforting words in my head. Thinking about Chris's race results today also made me bring up other comforting sentences in my head. Especially since we had an argument before the race, I hoped it wouldn't interfere with Chris' concentration during the race.
Round after round went by, and the intervals seemed to be changing all the time.
"Safety car required! Driver Chris De Luca crashed badly on lap 38!"
My worries turned out to be an unwelcome alarm. After lap 38, Chris crashed badly. Luckily, he didn't hit any other drivers, but it certainly interfered with his own performance.
Chris was taken off the track, I just looked at him sadly, I felt quite sorry for him. He's got a very slim points difference with Owen, they're both in the top two points positions so far in the WDC title race. Even though there were still a few races to go, this was still quite a blow to Chris, because if he continued to have incidents in the race then he would be far behind.
I went straight to see Chris in his room after he was delivered by the safety car. His crash was quite severe, and I was worried that he had internal injuries from the crash. Although at first glance he looked normal, but from the way he moved his arm, it looked like something was wrong.
"Please give us a moment to handle the driver."
The short sentence from the medical team made me hold my footsteps. Chris didn't show any obvious pain, but as I often watch Motorsport events, if there is a moment of further treatment like this, there might be an unusual injury to the driver.
Oh dear Chris. If you're not concentrating because of me, then I won't forgive myself.
Some time passed, the race continued, the team focusing on Chris's teammate until the end of the race. Others were also taking care of Chris' condition, and Mr Theo was also negotiating more with the FIA.
Everyone is busy right now. But to hell with that, I'm now worrying about Chris's condition which I don't know how bad it is.
"An injury to the flexor and extensor muscles. This is a part that cannot be underestimated. It doesn't look severe, but we're giving a referral for the driver to be hospitalised as soon as possible. We have administered a sedative, and are also providing first aid to prevent the injury from worsening."
My knees felt numb after hearing that explanation. There were two things that went through my head when I heard that sentence just now.
Chris's mental state would be devastated by the DNF this time, and Chris's physical condition would be in trouble.
These two things are serious problems for Chris. He will be even more devastated if his physical condition does not allow him to participate in the next race next week.
Chris and I were in different cars heading to the hospital. This situation certainly made my mind even more uneasy. I really should have been by his side to calm him down, provide mental support, and encourage him to stay strong.
During the journey there was not a single second that I could think straight. Mrs Carla also knew about this and she said that she would come in the next few hours after arriving at the airport. She travelled straight from her country to see Chris, of course, who wouldn't be worried to see their son injured?
