Chapter 83: "Blind Detective" Bill
"Yeah, it's the legendary blind detective."
Roy stared at the guy in the chair, half-thinking he was seeing things. But nah, he knew he only ever imagined monsters, not this Bill dude.
And now, with "Blind Detective" Bill showing up, things just got weirder.
What was a guy suspected to be a big shot from the "Umbrella Organization" doing here?
And the intel said Bill had rented the place at 88 Ginkgo Street months ago.
So, was this Bill in front of him dead or alive?
"Blind Detective" Bill was blind, but his other senses were off the charts.
When Roy came down, he saw Bill's ears twitch a bit.
Facing a real "gun master," Roy wasn't about to mess around. His hands stayed on his guns, but he didn't draw them.
Bill didn't seem hostile and spoke first, "You human?"
"Yeah."
Roy let out a breath of relief.
Not fighting right away was a good sign.
Plus, being able to chat, even in this weird situation, made things feel a bit safer.
Then Roy noticed a pool of blood at Bill's feet. The guy was hurt.
Instead of underestimating him, Roy got even more cautious.
With the crazy stuff happening on the third floor, it was hard to believe anyone could survive without some tricks. And this guy seemed to have fought his way out with just minor injuries, proving he was no joke.
But Roy glanced at the hallway, which looked untouched, and felt a bit confused.
Just then, Bill spoke again, "Who are you?"
He looked right at Roy, his blind eyes somehow locking onto him.
Roy said, "I'm the tenant of 88 Ginkgo Street. No clue why I'm in this mess."
After a pause, he asked, "Do you know what's going on here?"
He wanted to get some info from Bill.
After all, he was the legendary detective. Coming to Ginkgo Street, he must know something.
Bill caught a detail in Roy's words and asked, "New tenant? How long have I been missing?"
Roy admired Bill's sharpness but didn't spill everything, "I don't get what you're saying. I just moved in today."
Bill stayed calm, sensing Roy was holding back, but didn't push it.
Since they couldn't leave, talking about it was pointless.
Not hiding his detective identity, Bill continued, "As you can see, this is an ancient cursed space. I'm a detective, and I came here following clues from a 'missing person case.' By the way, how did you get in?"
No point in lying, so Roy answered, "I'm the new tenant. Heard someone died in the house before, checked it out, and somehow got dragged in."
Through the chat, Roy picked up some key info.
Bill had followed clues here and got trapped, making it seem like 88 Ginkgo Street itself was a "trap."
Who would go to such lengths, using a cursed space to trap people?
"I see."
Bill didn't seem surprised. Since he got in, he knew the special trigger conditions of this cursed space.
Then he said something weird, "That which is dead may eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die."
Being in the underworld for so long, Roy knew Bill was either giving a code or asking for a secret phrase.
It was probably an "Umbrella Organization" code.
Bill was trying to confirm his identity!
Roy wanted to respond but couldn't match the code, so he just said, "What did you just say?"
Bill looked a bit disappointed and muttered, "That lead is broken; no one else should come looking."
After a pause, he asked, "The monster upstairs is pretty strong. You managed to survive. Judging by your breathing, you must have recently leveled up."
Not flipping out because the code didn't match, Roy felt relieved.
The monster upstairs? There was no monster upstairs!
Hearing this, a light bulb went off in Roy's head, and he quickly said, "I ran into a few weak zombies, and I found out..."
He wanted to drop a hint to the blind detective not to overthink, but Bill cut him off.
Thoughts always race faster than words!
Just like you can stop someone from talking, but you can't stop them from thinking.
Bill's face turned serious, and he shook his head, interrupting, "Your tone tells me you're hiding something. But it doesn't matter. We probably won't make it out alive."
Roy looked at Bill's chiseled, sallow face and was momentarily stunned.
At the same time, he suddenly got what Bill meant and thought, "Oh crap."
But it was too late to stop him.
Bill's ears twitched, and he shouted, "The monster's coming again. Be careful!"
As he spoke, his hand went for the gun at his waist.
Hearing this, Roy knew it was game over.
Just then, he heard a sound like water, as if a tank had burst and water was gushing out. Roy looked again and saw blood flooding in from the end of the second-floor hallway, and a terrifying monster emerged.
A red, humanoid, deformed creature with blurred facial features, like a skinned gorilla.
Just the oppressive vibe made Roy instantly realize this was definitely not a first-level anomaly!
He immediately understood that this monster was a terrifying manifestation from Bill's imagination.
A blind person couldn't see the precise appearance of a monster but could form a rough outline in their mind through other senses. The abstract, skinless blood gorilla before him fit perfectly with a blind person's mental image.
As soon as the monster appeared, Bill reacted swiftly.
He stood up and, with a flick of his wrist, produced a submachine gun with an oversized magazine. Pulling the trigger, flames erupted, producing a rapid, crisp sound.
Roy recognized the gun immediately: "The high-rate-of-fire famous gun, 'Woodpecker'!"
Although blind, Bill's burst of fire accurately hit the blood gorilla's leg, causing a spray of blood.
Roy noticed something else: "Echolocation!"
The gorilla, its leg wounded, stumbled and hit the wall with its head.
At the sound of the collision, Bill suddenly drew a black revolver the size of his forearm with his left hand and fired three shots in quick succession.
The gunshots were deafening, almost sounding like a single shot.
Being a firearms expert himself, Roy could appreciate the skill in Bill's shooting.
Three rapid shots, the bullets seemingly connected, perfectly hitting the same spot on the monster's head.
"Advanced firearms technique, 'Multiple Overlapping Shots'!"
Roy's pupils contracted slightly, silently admiring the master's skill.
Even with alchemical bullets, an ordinary shooter couldn't break the defense of a second-level deformed monster. But if three shots hit the same spot in quick succession, they could break through the defense before it recovered.
One shot to shake, two to break the armor, three to penetrate!
This technique was beyond Roy's current reach, requiring exceptional skill, precision, and a rune firearm.
And the heavy revolver in Bill's hand was the key to this feat, none other than the famous rune gun, "Viper's Kiss"!
A perfect shot every time, and Bill was blind!
In just a brief second or two, Roy witnessed "Blind Detective" Bill severely injure a second-level deformed monster.
But it wasn't over.
Human thoughts are active, especially when encountering terrifying events.
Seeing the first monster appear, Roy knew things were going south.
Sure enough, before the blood gorilla was fully dead, two giant "flying head monsters" appeared out of nowhere, almost blocking the hallway. Their human-like faces had blurred features like plaster statues, but their hair was a mass of living black snakes.
Judging by the appearance of these monsters, they were clearly products of a blind person's sensory world, undoubtedly created by Bill's imagination.
There were no horror movies in this world to provide material; what Bill imagined was likely something he had experienced or that truly existed.
How many terrifying events had Bill gone through?
If he stayed any longer, he would be dragged down by Bill!
Seeing this, Roy didn't hesitate and turned to retreat back to the third floor via the stairs.
