Trust on the Edge 2
Trust on the Edge 2
“What?“ A bitter laugh tore itself out of my chest. No one would be left to cling to me? He still had the nerve to be possessive about me?
Ignoring his foolish confession, I pressed on to understand his line of logic. “But instead, you fed the people you were to save to him. The same people you once ordered to follow you.”
His mouth twitched. “It was never really about them.”
“Of course it wasn’t,” I retorted with a tight tone as my fingers itched to hit him. He participated in the death of my parents, yet he was standing there like he had any right to say the things that were leaving his wretched mouth.
I once thought I’d run out of room for rage where he was concerned, but he still found ways to surprise me. My sorcery hummed under my skin, restless and hungry to bite into him the way my wolf promised. All of me shared the same instinct to break him.
But before I could tell him to leave, he tried to plead further, “You don’t know what it’s like. Seeing you. Knowing you were mine and—”
“Yours? I was never yours!“ I snapped.
“I had nightmares,” He snapped right back with his authority hauling at me in a desperate demand to have me listen.
“Since I first saw you, I had them every night. You! Every night! Standing over me with marble white eyes that haunted me and a white wolf that took pleasure in tearing me apart, over and over.”
I held my breath for him to go on, feeling the temperature drop further around us.
Higan’s crazed pair of yellow eyes locked on mine. “What was I supposed to do with that? I knew you were my mate long before I rejected you, but every time I thought of coming remotely close, I could feel my hair stand on end with tremors!“
“I scared you? A mere omega?“ I spat with fury, pressing forward to glare him down. “Bullshit!“
“Yes, you! A mere omega!“ He growled menacingly while standing his own ground. I hated that he wasn't choosing to waver this time. “I thought rejecting you would end it. I thought if I cut you off, the dreams would stop, but that wasn't even enough!”
I didn’t move. Didn’t breathe for a second because I knew anything more out of me would be ice that'll dig into his bones. The air seemed to choke in around me like cold iron. He was insinuating that all those months of pain and isolation were somehow my fault?
“You wouldn't stop haunting me, and I hated it!“ he went on. “I fought over and over, but I was nothing compared to the horror that you were. I've never held you, but I know the feel of your hands on my skin when you dig them through my very flesh. Each time I look into your eyes, I count the seconds before they glaze with cruelty. Every breath in your presence was a daze I desperately wanted to escape. YOU WERE MY CAUSE!“
Before I could reach to tear his throat out, I felt my necklace burn my collarbone. Out of the blue, clarity that was never there established itself.
My sorcereress counterpart hummed alive with a condescending cackle in my head as I'd chanced upon one of her secrets.
“The daughters of Gaia's don't have mates,” she purred like silk under my thoughts simmering the cold rage that burned on my fingers and heart.
Melbringers don't have ties or bonds to ground them to anything. The mate link existed for only half of me that was dormant all my life. So without all of me, the bond cracked.
The one thing meant to tether him to me never fit right because another was made to cloak both of my natures.
Not only that, the crack in our bond was left to fester with unchecked sorcery. Higan didn't see me in his dreams; he saw a part of me grown with rage from being locked inside me.
Our bond became a curse to him.
It was my fault.
“But,” I managed to croak out. “It doesn't change the fact,” I inched closer to peer into his guarded eye. “That you tried to break me for something I had no control over. As my mate, you should have done better.”
His throat bobbed as a sign of shame and something foreign skated over his simmering eyes. “Which I'm trying to do now, if you'd just work with me.”
He was right. He was right. I did need to help him. And no it wasn't to redeem him, it was rather to make sure no one else suffers from his strings of bad decision-making.
Lorcan had long stepped out in silence with Becca, most likely dangling over his shoulder. Before Ethan could return or anyone could talk me out of it, I nodded to Higan.
“No,” I uttered into the air whilst holding a finger to my lips to dart my eyes over to the cracked door. I couldn't slip out, knowing the werewolves that had their ears alert could hear us if they tried.
If we could do this without risking anyone else getting eaten, then I would happily do so even if I had to do it with Higan.
Higan bobbed his head slowly as he squinted his eyes, but he understood me. I gestured to the open window of the office space where I'd stared out into the thundering sky to think half an hour ago.
“You should leave now,” I ordered flatly before mouthing, “meet me by the window down.”
For the first time in my life, I decided to trust Higan Sinclair, and I would deeply regret it. But, I couldn't play the victim, given I willingly stepped right into his obvious little trap for me.
